You usually do not need to upload a livestream again to make it available on demand: YouTube can automatically archive eligible streams. After the broadcast, find it in YouTube Studio under Content → Live, set its visibility, and either keep the full replay, trim it, or create a separate highlight. Check that the archive exists, especially if the stream ran for more than 12 hours, and keep a local recording as a backup.
How YouTube archives a live stream
YouTube’s current Help guidance says encoder, webcam, and mobile livestreams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. It also identifies 1440p and 2160p (4K) streams as automatically archived. This is not a guarantee that every broadcast will appear as a replay, so verify the archive after ending the stream.
YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a broadcast you cannot afford to lose, make a local recording as well. YouTube recommends this backup; its guidance does not specify a particular device or storage capacity. YouTube Help: Archive live streams
Find the replay and set its visibility
- After the broadcast ends, open YouTube Studio.
- Go to Content → Live and locate the stream archive.
- Open the archive’s details, change Visibility to the setting you want, and save.
If you streamed from a mobile device, YouTube also says you can make the archive private or delete it from the My videos page.

Keep the complete replay
Leave the archive intact when the full event matters—for example, a documentary screening, interview, or discussion whose context depends on the whole broadcast. Set its visibility as appropriate; no edit or reupload is needed just to retain the replay.
Trim the existing replay
Use YouTube Studio’s Editor to remove dead time, a rough opening, or an unwanted section while keeping the existing video. On a computer:

YouTube says this tool works on videos shorter than six hours and does not require reuploading; the video URL, views, and comments remain. Its Help page also says that, for unedited videos with more than 100,000 views, saving changes may be restricted unless the channel is in the YouTube Partner Program, except for face blurring. Since June 2025, saved Studio Editor changes can no longer be undone with Revert to original. Treat saving as consequential and check the preview before applying edits. YouTube Help: Trim your videos
Create a separate highlight
If the full event is too long for the intended audience, create a shorter highlight instead of replacing the replay. YouTube supports creating a highlight during or after a live stream. During the broadcast, you can add stream markers at useful moments; afterward, those markers appear on the Editor timeline. Select the segment, enter its title, privacy, and description, then create the highlight. YouTube says the highlight is published automatically. YouTube Help: Create a highlight

Which option fits your replay?
| Option | Best for | What happens | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep the full archive | Viewers who need the complete event and its context | The original livestream replay remains available at its archive URL, subject to its visibility setting. | Streams over 12 hours may not be captured. |
| Trim or cut in Studio | Removing unwanted material while retaining the existing replay | The edit is applied without reuploading; YouTube says URL, views, and comments remain. | Available for videos shorter than six hours; some unedited videos over 100,000 views may have restrictions on saving edits. |
| Create a highlight | Publishing a shorter selection alongside the full event | YouTube creates and automatically publishes a separate highlight video. | For a mobile-stream Short highlight, separate eligibility rules apply. |
Special rules for mobile livestream Short highlights
YouTube’s mobile-stream Short-highlight route is narrower than the general highlight workflow. Its stated criteria include all of the following: the livestream lasts 10 minutes to 12 hours, is vertical, is streamed using the YouTube mobile app, has chat enabled, is not marked “Made for Kids,” and meets YouTube’s safety standards. These criteria concern this Short-highlight option; they are not general requirements for keeping a full livestream archive. YouTube Help: Promote your live stream
Common problems and what to do
- The replay is missing: Check Content → Live after the stream ends. YouTube says streams over 12 hours may not be captured; its archive guidance is not a guarantee for every stream. If the event matters, use your local recording as the recovery copy.
- You cannot save a trim: Confirm the video is shorter than six hours. If it is an unedited video with more than 100,000 views, YouTube says saving edits may be restricted outside the YouTube Partner Program, except for face blurring.
- You want a short version but do not want to replace the replay: Create a highlight, which YouTube describes as a separate video, rather than trimming the full archive.
- You are making a mobile Short highlight: Check each specific format and eligibility criterion before relying on this route; it is not the same as ordinary archiving.
- You need to undo a saved Studio edit: YouTube says that since June 2025, saved Editor changes can no longer be undone using Revert to original. Review the preview before saving and retain a local copy when the original matters.
Or let it run in the cloud

Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays the video as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
