Check the encoder preview and local recording, then investigate upload stability, YouTube’s stream health, bitrate and ingest settings. A spare PC is not automatically the cause, and a speed test or a new computer alone cannot identify the fault.
Start by capturing what happens
Before changing settings, record the time and duration of a disconnect. Note the exact error shown by the encoder, what YouTube Live Control Room reports about stream health, whether the encoder still says it is sending, and whether viewers experienced the same interruption. Keep a local recording if your encoder supports it. Change one thing at a time so the next test can help identify the cause.
Determine whether the encoder or connection is at fault
Check the encoder preview and local recording
Watch the encoder’s own preview or output. If the picture or sound is already faulty there, inspect the incoming audio and video sources, capture devices, routing and encoder errors. Check the PC’s CPU load and whether spikes line up with the problem; YouTube does not specify a universal CPU threshold for a spare PC.
Review the local recording, too. If it contains the same glitches, investigate the PC, sources and encoder configuration before treating the problem as a YouTube ingest issue. Update the encoder software to its current version as part of this check.

If local output is clean, check what is sent to YouTube
If the encoder preview and local recording look healthy but YouTube reports a problem, shift attention to outbound connectivity, stream settings and ingest credentials. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance identifies a possible issue with the outbound internet connection as one explanation when the local output is healthy.
Test upload capacity and network stability
Test upload speed with the spare PC connected in the same way it will be during the broadcast. Download speed is not a substitute: the stream needs sufficient outbound upload capacity. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom. If you run a backup encoder at the same time, include the bitrate of both the primary and backup streams in your capacity calculation.

Other people and devices sharing the connection can use bandwidth needed by the stream. If results vary or disconnects coincide with network trouble, repeat the test, pause large uploads and compare conditions at a less congested time. A wired connection can be a useful diagnostic comparison if the PC and router support it; it is not a guaranteed fix. A speed test is only a snapshot, so compare its results with the timestamps of encoder errors and YouTube health messages. The cited guidance does not specify a packet-loss threshold.
YouTube warns that a disruption in connectivity could break a stream. If tests point to a connection fault, contact your internet service provider.

Match encoder settings to YouTube’s guidance
Use a quality setting the connection can sustain reliably, then test with audio and movement similar to the actual broadcast. YouTube’s current encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); AAC or MP3 audio; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds.
The bitrate figures below are YouTube Help’s current guidance, accessed 2026-10-03. They are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain the rate. Upload headroom is needed in addition to the stream’s bitrate.

If the spare PC cannot encode smoothly at your chosen resolution, frame rate or codec, reduce the workload and repeat a representative test. Watch CPU load and encoder status. The available YouTube guidance does not establish a particular hardware threshold or prove that an upgrade is necessary.

The encoder’s stream key and server URL must match the values shown in YouTube Live Control Room. A stream key is the credential and destination information the encoder uses to send the feed. If the encoder reports a key-related start error, retrieve the current key in Live Control Room and update the encoder.

For an RTMPS connection timeout, verify that the encoder is using the RTMPS server URL from Live Control Room, and check that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube says port 443 can be specified for certain SSL errors when the URL and encoder settings allow it. Use that only for a matching SSL error, not as a general fix for every disconnection.
Rehearse before the broadcast
Run a private or unlisted test with audio and movement similar to the real stream. Check the preview before starting, then monitor YouTube stream health, encoder output and the local recording. YouTube’s computer-streaming tips recommend setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event. If you have configured backup-encoder failover, test it by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, as YouTube describes.
