Upload the video from your Windows PC to your Linux VPS over SFTP (the easiest graphical option), then run FFmpeg on the VPS and send the stream to the RTMPS URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The two network legs have different jobs: your Indian PC’s upload connection moves the file to the server; the VPS’s outbound connection carries the live stream to YouTube.
Before you start
You need a video file on your PC, a Linux VPS you can access over SSH, an SFTP client or command-line transfer tool, FFmpeg on the VPS, and a YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. Have the VPS host name or IP address, SSH username, authentication details, and SSH port ready. Port 22 is the usual default, but your provider or administrator may have changed it. The VPS firewall or security rules must allow connections to the configured SSH port.
- Check that you can sign in to the VPS over SSH before attempting a file transfer.
- Choose a destination directory that both your login account and the account running FFmpeg can read.
- Retrieve the current RTMPS server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: someone who obtains it may be able to publish to your stream.
Provider instructions can differ, so use your VPS provider’s connection details and firewall controls. Google Cloud’s file-transfer guide and DigitalOcean’s Droplet guide describe common SSH-based workflows: Google Cloud file transfers and DigitalOcean file transfers.
Choose a way to send the video

Upload from Windows with SFTP
Connect with WinSCP or FileZilla
- Install WinSCP or FileZilla on Windows, then create a new SFTP connection.
- Enter the VPS host name or IP address, SSH username, and configured SSH port. Select SSH-key authentication and provide the private key if that is how your VPS is configured. DigitalOcean’s guide describes FileZilla as a graphical SFTP option and recommends SSH keys: DigitalOcean SFTP instructions.
- Connect and navigate to the directory where you want the video stored. Choose a location that the FFmpeg process will be able to read.
- Drag the video from the local file pane to the VPS pane. Wait for the client to report that the transfer has completed.
- Keep the original on your PC until you have verified the remote copy and completed a test stream.
Check the remote file
Sign in to the VPS over SSH and inspect the destination directory. For example, replace /path/to/video.mp4 with the actual path and file name:

ls -lh /path/to/video.mp4Confirm that the file exists and has a plausible size. If FFmpeg later reports that it cannot open the file, check the full path and the read permissions for the user running FFmpeg.
Other transfer routes
SCP for a one-off copy
From a Windows shell with an SCP client available, the general form is:
scp -i "C:pathtoprivate-key" "C:pathtovideo.mp4" username@VPS_HOST:/path/to/destination/Replace each example value with your actual key path, local video path, VPS username and host, and remote directory. If your SSH port is not the client’s default, consult that SCP client’s help for its port option. Google documents SSH-based copying with gcloud compute scp for Google Cloud VMs; its syntax and authentication setup are specific to that service: Google Cloud transfer documentation.

rsync for repeated synchronization
rsync can be useful when you regularly synchronize a directory, but available clients and exact flags vary. Check that it is installed on both ends and consult the documentation for your local shell and SSH setup before copying a command. DigitalOcean lists rsync, OpenSSH SFTP, and SCP among command-line transfer options: DigitalOcean transfer options.

A cloud-storage relay
If the PC cannot reach the VPS over SSH, upload the file from the PC to a storage bucket, then download it from the bucket on the VPS. For Google Cloud, the transfer guide says upload identities need Storage Object Admin and download identities need Storage Object Viewer; roles differ on other services. Remove the temporary object when it is no longer needed to avoid unwanted storage charges. See Google Cloud’s transfer guide.
Check transfer time and network capacity
There is no established fastest Indian ISP, VPS provider, region, or route for this workflow. Measure the upload rate you actually get from your PC to your VPS and compare it with the video size and time available. As a rough planning method, divide the file size in bits by the measured transfer rate in bits per second; real transfers can take longer because throughput varies and protocols add overhead.

Do not confuse the transfer connection with the streaming connection. The PC’s upload speed controls how quickly the video reaches the VPS. Once the file is there, the VPS’s outbound bandwidth must sustain the stream to YouTube. YouTube advises that the total stream bitrate remain below available outbound bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom; test and monitor stream health rather than assuming a VPS plan will sustain a particular bitrate. Prepare YouTube and FFmpeg
Get the current RTMPS destination and key
In YouTube Live Control Room, use the server URL and stream key associated with the stream you configured. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP, for RTMP-family ingest. The URL and key can depend on the configured stream, so use the values YouTube currently displays rather than copying an old example: YouTube RTMPS setup and YouTube encoder settings.

Choose video settings for your source and connection
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video, with frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. It lists AAC or MP3 for audio. Consult the live settings table for the codec and resolution you intend to send; the figures below are YouTube’s H.264 figures, not independent test results.

These bitrate values come from YouTube’s encoder settings table. Do not apply H.264 figures to HEVC or AV1; those codecs have their own settings. Select a bitrate the VPS can send consistently, with YouTube’s recommended headroom, rather than choosing solely by the source file’s resolution.
Stream a file in real time
FFmpeg takes input files with -i and writes to an output URL. Its -re option paces a file input in real time for RTMP-family output. The following is a template, not a tested command: adapt the paths, codec settings, and YouTube-provided destination to your file and installed FFmpeg build.

-f flv "YOUR_YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"This example’s 5 Mbps video bitrate is an illustrative choice, not a universal recommendation: confirm it suits your selected resolution, frame rate, codec and available VPS outbound capacity. At 30 fps, a 60-frame GOP gives a two-second keyframe interval; if you change the frame rate, adjust the keyframe settings to preserve the intended interval. The example re-encodes to H.264 and AAC. Whether the source can be sent without re-encoding depends on its codecs and YouTube’s current requirements.
Keep the destination private. If you use a shell variable or a protected configuration file for the stream key, restrict access to it and do not print it in troubleshooting output. FFmpeg command and protocol behavior can vary by build; refer to the installed version and FFmpeg’s documentation for input, output, and real-time pacing details: FFmpeg command documentation and FFmpeg protocol documentation.

- Start the stream as a private or unlisted test, using the appropriate YouTube visibility setting.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators while FFmpeg is running.
- Check that audio and video play, that the broadcast is stable, and that the final YouTube video is available and plays as expected.
- If the test fails, use the troubleshooting checks below before switching to a public broadcast.
A successful file transfer does not prove the stream has enough outbound capacity, and a successful encoder connection does not establish that you have rights to broadcast the content. Use material you have permission to stream, and check YouTube’s current copyright and monetization rules, including rules that may apply to repetitive or reused material. Troubleshoot common failures
