Preserve each picture’s aspect ratio, choose whether to pad or crop mismatched shapes, and set the encoder for YouTube’s live ingest guidance. This gives the playlist a consistent output even when its source clips differ.
1. Inspect the clips and choose one output profile
Before building a shared filter chain, inspect every source file. Record its width and height, frame rate, sample aspect ratio (SAR), scan type, pixel format, audio layout, and color metadata. Flag interlaced footage, HDR material, unusual aspect ratios, and clips with different audio formats; these can need extra processing rather than a one-size-fits-all filter.
Then choose a fixed output canvas and frame rate for the entire playlist. Base the choice on the channel’s presentation needs, the encoding capacity of the machine, the available network headroom, and YouTube’s ingest recommendations. There is no universally best profile for every media library or computer.
Decide how mismatched aspect ratios should look
- Fit and pad: Scale the whole picture into the canvas and fill unused space with bars. This retains all source image content.
- Fill and crop: Scale until the canvas is filled, trimming parts of the source image. This fills the screen but may cut off important material near the edges.
- Stretch: Change the picture’s geometry to fill the canvas. This distorts people and objects, so use it only when that distortion is intentional.
Fit and pad or fill and crop preserve geometry; choose between them based on whether showing every edge or filling the frame matters more. Do not stretch merely to avoid bars.

2. Normalize each clip to the canvas
For a fit-and-pad workflow, FFmpeg’s scale filter can reduce each source as needed while keeping its aspect ratio. Conceptually, the scaling stage is scale=TARGET_W:TARGET_H:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease, followed by a padding stage that makes the result exactly TARGET_W by TARGET_H. Replace those names with your chosen dimensions and configure the padding color and placement deliberately.
This is a filter pattern, not a tested, drop-in command for every FFmpeg build or collection. Check the installed FFmpeg version, available filters and encoders, and the properties of the actual clips. Encoder constraints may also differ between libx264 and hardware encoders.
Dimensions, SAR, and encoder constraints
Keep the final canvas at the exact dimensions selected for the output profile. Some encoders require even dimensions; verify the constraint for the encoder you use. FFmpeg’s force_divisible_by option can constrain dimensions when used with aspect-ratio enforcement, although the resulting ratio can shift slightly.
Sources can use a sample aspect ratio other than 1:1, so pixel dimensions alone do not always describe the displayed shape. FFmpeg documents reset_sar as a way to reset SAR to 1:1 while accounting for display aspect ratio during proportional scaling. Confirm the resulting display shape rather than assuming every source uses square pixels. See the FFmpeg filters documentation.

Color and interlacing need deliberate handling
YouTube recommends Rec. 709 for SDR and square pixels. If sources have different color metadata, or include HDR footage, choose a real conversion and mixing workflow. Simply relabeling HDR footage as Rec. 709 does not convert its image. Inspect interlaced clips too and decide how to handle them before combining them with progressive sources; one shared scale operation alone does not resolve every source-format difference.
3. Normalize frame rate, timestamps, and audio
Set one output frame rate for the playlist. When sources have different frame rates, make the conversion intentional and check for judder or duplicated frames in representative footage. Confirm that timestamps advance correctly and that the playlist does not introduce gaps or timing problems at clip boundaries.
Standardize audio when clips differ in sample format, channel layout, or other relevant properties. Check audio continuity and synchronization across transitions; a picture filter cannot ensure that unrelated audio streams join cleanly. YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 for live audio. For 5.1 audio delivered over RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube specifies AAC.
4. Pick a concat approach that matches the workflow
FFmpeg distinguishes the concat filter, concat demuxer, and concat protocol. The concat filter is designed for concatenation with re-encoding, making it the relevant option when clips need normalization before they can share one output profile. The concat demuxer can avoid re-encoding when input streams meet its compatibility constraints; mixed-resolution sources that need a common canvas generally do not meet the goal of avoiding processing. Consult the FFmpeg FAQ for the distinctions.

Concatenating files is not, by itself, a complete 24/7 live playlist design. For live playback, arrange for one stable encoder output to continue while the playlist advances from source to source. Validate the chosen playlist mechanism with your actual files and FFmpeg build before relying on it for a broadcast.
5. Set YouTube Live ingest parameters
YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as video codec options. It supports frame rates up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For SDR, it recommends Rec. 709 and square pixels. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings before production because ingest guidance can change.
H.264 recommended ingest bitrates
The following are YouTube’s published H.264 live-ingest recommendations, accessed in 2026. They are recommendations for the specified profiles, not measurements of a particular stream.
| Output profile | Recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
Choose a bitrate for the actual output resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than copying a video-upload recommendation. The YouTube guidance page has separate recommendations for H.265, AV1, and other resolutions. Leave network headroom and test at the intended bitrate; a connection that can only just meet the target leaves little room for delivery variation.

6. Test the whole playlist before going live
Use a representative sequence that includes the most varied source properties in the library: different resolutions and frame rates, the aspect ratios most likely to need padding or cropping, and any unusual audio or color cases. Check image framing, motion, audio synchronization, transitions, and whether output dimensions and frame rate remain stable as clips change.
Send a test stream using the intended codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and ingest path. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the test and verify the picture and audio at the receiving end. A successful encode on one file does not establish that every playlist transition will work.
7. Troubleshoot common failures
- Output dimensions change between clips: Check that every source passes through the same fixed canvas and that padding or cropping follows scaling. Inspect encoder constraints and confirm the final dimensions at transitions.
- Pictures look stretched: Remove any step that forces source dimensions directly to the canvas without aspect-ratio preservation. Choose fit-and-pad or fill-and-crop instead.
- Bars appear unexpectedly: In fit-and-pad mode, bars are expected when source and canvas aspect ratios differ. If the image must fill the screen, use a deliberate crop and check that it does not remove important content.
- Motion judders or cadence changes at cuts: Check source and output frame rates and timestamp handling. A single output frame rate requires converting sources that do not match it; inspect transitions in the representative test.
- Audio drops, changes level, or loses synchronization: Compare source audio layouts and formats, normalize them consistently, and check timestamps and continuity at each boundary. Verify that the live audio codec is accepted by YouTube; 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS requires AAC according to its guidance.
- Stream health is poor despite a successful local encode: Confirm the selected codec and ingest bitrate, use CBR and the recommended keyframe interval, and test whether the connection has headroom at the planned bitrate.
- Colors look wrong after mixing SDR and HDR: Revisit the color conversion workflow and metadata. Do not treat metadata relabeling as a substitute for converting image values.
- A filter or encoder option fails: Confirm the installed FFmpeg build and its available filters and encoders. Hardware encoders can impose different requirements from
libx264; adjust and retest against the deployed build.
