To test whether upload jitter is contributing to YouTube stream dropouts, compare repeated streams under controlled conditions: record OBS network-dropped-frame times and YouTube Live Control Room health messages, then change one connection variable—such as Wi-Fi to Ethernet—while keeping encoder settings and content as consistent as possible. If the symptoms repeatedly improve on the alternate connection, that supports a connection-path problem, but it does not prove jitter specifically: OBS and YouTube do not provide a YouTube-specific jitter reading or a validated jitter threshold.
What OBS and YouTube can—and cannot—tell you
OBS describes network-dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. That counter is useful evidence of delivery trouble, but it is not a measurement of jitter. YouTube’s Live Streaming API lists ingestion and encoder-configuration health issues, not a jitter diagnosis. Treat both as signals to correlate with a controlled test, not as direct jitter meters. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide was dated September 30, 2024; YouTube’s health-status documentation describes the relevant issue types.
A speed test’s peak upload result is not enough to establish that a live stream can be delivered steadily. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and checking stream health; run a representative pre-stream test with movement and audio, not just a static scene. Its health messages can distinguish ingestion starvation from configuration warnings, including bitrate, codec, frame rate, and keyframe-frequency issues. See YouTube’s encoder settings and live-streaming guidance.
Run a controlled test
1. Record the symptom and the baseline
In OBS, note the stream’s start and end times, target bitrate, resolution and frame rate, connection type, and any network dropped-frame count or percentage. Record when each dropout occurs. Make sure the problem is actually reported as network-dropped frames: rendering lag and encoding lag point to different parts of the streaming pipeline and should not be labelled upload jitter.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep the stream content, encoder settings, and household or network load as similar as practical across test runs. The baseline needs to last long enough to capture an intermittent fault; a short clean run cannot show that the problem has gone away. There is no official YouTube-required test duration for this comparison.
2. Match OBS events to YouTube stream health
For a private or unlisted test where appropriate, watch stream health in YouTube Live Control Room while OBS is streaming. Write down the times of health warnings and compare them with OBS’s dropped-frame timestamps. YouTube’s API describes videoIngestionStarved as “YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming.” That is evidence of an ingestion problem, not proof of jitter. Configuration warnings may instead point toward encoder settings.

3. Change one connection variable
If the baseline uses Wi-Fi, repeat the test using wired Ethernet, leaving the bitrate, resolution, frame rate, content, and other settings unchanged. OBS recommends wired networking because “WiFi may be unstable for streaming.” If you need a cable to make this comparison, a Cat6 Ethernet cable can enable the test; it cannot fix ISP congestion or a problem elsewhere on the route. See OBS’s troubleshooting guidance.
If network drops consistently diminish on Ethernet and return on Wi-Fi, that supports the idea that the local wireless path contributes. It does not identify jitter as the mechanism, or rule out an ISP or routing issue. If you already stream over Ethernet, do not buy a cable for this test; look at the other checks below.

4. Check sustainable upload capacity and encoder settings
Compare your available, sustained upload capacity with the encoder’s target bitrate. YouTube’s recommendations are configuration guidance, not jitter thresholds. The table below gives examples from YouTube Help, accessed October 3, 2026; no publication year was displayed on the page.
| Output | AV1 or H.265 recommended ingestion bitrate | H.264 recommended ingestion bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s codec-specific recommendations for the listed resolution and frame rate, not minimum upload-speed guarantees and not cutoffs for jitter. Check the current YouTube encoder-settings table for the complete recommendations and any changes. OBS suggests lowering the bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the selected rate. Dynamic bitrate may reduce dropped frames by lowering video quality when needed, but it does not repair the underlying connection problem.

5. Rule out other local and network causes
- VPN or security software: Repeat a test without a VPN if one is in use, where safe and appropriate, and check whether security software affects the connection.
- Network-prioritization utilities: Check for software that may deprioritize OBS or the encoder.
- Drivers and local equipment: Consider network drivers, modem or router, cables, and other network hardware.
- ISP or route congestion: If trouble persists over Ethernet after local checks, record the timestamps and symptoms and contact your ISP. Congestion or routing problems may be outside your home network.
OBS covers these possibilities, including VPNs, network optimization software, drivers, hardware, and ISP escalation, in its connection troubleshooting guide.

- Repeated OBS network drops line up with YouTube ingestion warnings: This supports an ongoing delivery or ingestion problem. It does not isolate jitter from insufficient sustainable bitrate, connection instability, or another route issue.
- Ethernet repeatedly improves the result compared with Wi-Fi: The local wireless path may be contributing. This comparison does not establish a jitter value or exclude ISP and routing factors.
- The encoder shows no network drops, but viewers report buffering: Investigate playback and latency separately. YouTube explains that lower latency leaves less read-ahead buffer, making viewers more susceptible to fluctuations between the encoder and player. A viewer can therefore experience buffering even when the encoder’s network counter does not show drops. See YouTube’s latency guidance.
- One test is clean or a speed test shows a high peak: Neither result rules out an intermittent fault or proves that the connection can sustain the stream reliably.
The official sources cited here do not establish a numeric upload-jitter threshold for YouTube dropouts or a validated jitter-only test. If you need a numeric jitter measurement, these sources do not identify a diagnostic tool or threshold that predicts YouTube stream failures.
