In YouTube Studio on a computer, open that archive and use Test & compare. YouTube’s documentation supports tests on live archives, not on the active continuous broadcast itself; check the archive’s eligibility in Studio before planning a test.
First, distinguish the live broadcast from its archive
A 24/7 broadcast is the active stream viewers are watching. An archive is the saved video YouTube may make from that stream. YouTube’s help pages document thumbnail testing for eligible live archives, while its separate A/B-testing guidance excludes scheduled live streams. They do not establish that every always-on setup can test the active broadcast’s thumbnail. If a stream has no saved archive, or it repeatedly restarts as separate sessions, the reviewed guidance does not settle its eligibility; look for the relevant saved video in Studio.
In practice, the test is for the archive video after it exists and qualifies—not a way to run an experiment on the continuous broadcast itself.
Check that the archive can use Test & compare
- Use YouTube Studio on a computer; YouTube lists the feature as computer-only.
- Advanced features must be enabled for the channel.
- The video must appear as an eligible public video. YouTube lists public long-form videos and podcast episodes; a Premiere becomes eligible after it ends and converts to a long-form video.
- Private videos and content restricted as Made for Kids or for mature audiences are excluded under YouTube’s eligibility guidance.
- Custom thumbnail uploads have a separate account-verification requirement. Check the test-specific eligibility and the current Studio interface as well.
The Test & compare feature permits up to three thumbnail variants, so two are within its limit. An eligible archive is essential: seeing a thumbnail on the active stream does not itself mean the stream can enter a test.

Run a two-thumbnail test in YouTube Studio
- Find the saved archive. In YouTube Studio, open Content and locate the video corresponding to the 24/7 broadcast. Confirm that you are editing the archive, not configuring a scheduled or active live event.
- Open the thumbnail controls. Select the archive, then find its Thumbnail area in the video details. Choose Test & compare. If the option is absent, verify the eligibility requirements above and use Studio’s current interface to check whether the video qualifies.
- Add two distinct options. Upload the two thumbnails you want to compare, then start the test. Make the options meaningfully different—for example, change the image composition or focal point—rather than relying on tiny variations. YouTube cautions that small differences can take longer to distinguish or may not produce a clear result.
- Use suitable image resolution. YouTube recommends the highest resolution for test thumbnails. If any option is below 720p (1280 Ă— 720), the experiment thumbnails are downscaled to 480p (854 Ă— 480).
- Wait for the result in Studio. YouTube says results may take a few days and can take up to two weeks. Avoid treating an early fluctuation as a final result.
Understand what the result means
YouTube selects a test result by watch-time share, not click-through rate (CTR) alone. Its stated rationale is that evaluating thumbnails by watch-time share best supports creator growth. The report may show one of these outcomes:
- Winner: YouTube found a clear, statistically significant result.
- Preferred: one option appears more likely to perform better, but the result is less certain.
- None: the test did not find a strong difference.
Low impressions or thumbnails that differ only slightly can make a clear outcome less likely. If there is no clear winner, YouTube’s documented behavior is to leave the first uploaded thumbnail as the default; you can also manually select a thumbnail.

Use Live analytics as context, not as a substitute for the test
To review broader performance, open YouTube Studio Analytics, select the Content tab, and filter to Live. YouTube’s live analytics include impressions, impressions CTR, views, and average view duration. Impressions count thumbnail displays on YouTube, not displays on external sites or apps. CTR reflects how often viewers watched after seeing the thumbnail, but it reflects the thumbnail, title, and stream content together. Average view duration is the average minutes watched per view for the selected content, date range, geography, and filters.
These measures help explain the viewer funnel—appeal, engagement, and viewing duration—but they do not override the native experiment’s watch-time-share result. For a continuously running channel, compare streams with the same content format and account for changes in programming or audience. Performance can shift over time and across viewer groups.

When a manual thumbnail change is—and is not—a test
| Approach | What it can tell you | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Native Test & compare on an eligible archive | Compares variants concurrently and reports a result based on watch-time share. | Requires an eligible saved archive and access to the feature in Studio. |
| Change the thumbnail manually and observe analytics | Lets you monitor measures such as impressions CTR and average view duration after a change. | It is observational, not a concurrent controlled A/B test. Timing, audience, title, or content changes can affect the comparison. |
YouTube warns that third-party sequential tests can yield conflicting results when they expose thumbnails at different times or optimize for CTR alone. A before-and-after check in Analytics may be useful for monitoring, but it cannot isolate the thumbnail’s effect in the way a concurrent experiment is intended to.
Troubleshoot common issues
- “Test & compare” is missing: Confirm you are on a computer, advanced features are enabled, and the selected item is an eligible public archive video. Check for content restrictions and verify the current Studio interface.
- The active stream has no eligible video: The documented workflow requires a saved archive that qualifies. YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not establish a test for every continuous-stream configuration; check whether an archive appears in Studio.
- The result is taking time: A few days to two weeks is within YouTube’s stated range. Low impressions or very similar options can make a decisive result harder to obtain.
- The report says “Preferred” or “None”: Treat it as an uncertain or inconclusive outcome, not proof that one thumbnail won. The first uploaded option remains the default if no clear winner is found, and you may choose one manually.
- Performance changed after a manual swap: Do not attribute the difference to the thumbnail alone. The title, content, timing, and audience may also have changed.
Or let it run in the cloud
Thumbnail testing still happens in YouTube Studio; StreamNeo does not perform or replace that test. If you also want the prerecorded broadcast to keep running without a computer or home connection left on, StreamNeo uploads and loops videos from the cloud. Upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and includes a first day free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera-based live broadcasts. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
