How to Sync Your Apple Music Library Across Devices

Turn on Sync Library with the same Apple Account on every device to access your Apple Music library across Mac, Windows, iPhone, iPad, Android, and the web—but keep a separate backup of local music.

The short answer: turn on Sync Library in the Apple Music app on every device, sign in everywhere with the same Apple Account, and keep an Apple Music or iTunes Match subscription active. Your playlists, Apple Music additions, eligible purchases, and matched or uploaded personal music can then be streamed or downloaded on your other supported devices.

Sync Library is a cloud service—not a USB transfer and not a backup. Before enabling, disabling, or rebuilding it, protect any imported CDs, recordings, or other music files that exist only on your computer.

What you need before syncing

  • An Apple Music subscription or iTunes Match. Sync Library requires one of these services. If the option is missing, first check whether the subscription is active.
  • The same Apple Account on every device. The account must be the one connected to the subscription. It should also be the account associated with purchased music you want to access.
  • An internet connection. Your library may take some time to process, especially if it contains many tracks or local files.
  • A separate backup of local music. Apple Music is not a backup service. Imported CDs, personal recordings, and files stored on your computer should exist in another backup before you change Sync Library settings.

Sync Library replaces the older iCloud Music Library name in current Apple Music apps. Older versions of iTunes for Windows may still use the older label.

Protect your local library first

Sync Library can make music available in the cloud, but it does not guarantee that every original file will remain available in its original form. Apple may match eligible music to its catalog or upload files that cannot be matched. A separate backup protects the actual files if a computer fails or a library needs to be rebuilt.

Seagate Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PS4, & Xbox - 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX5000400), Black
  • Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

For a Mac, an external disk used with Time Machine is a practical option. Apple documents Time Machine backups to external USB or Thunderbolt storage. An external hard drive for Mac backup is not required for syncing; it is protection for music that you cannot easily redownload.

Turn on Sync Library

On a Mac

  1. Open the Music app.
  2. In the menu bar, choose Account and confirm that the correct Apple Account is signed in.
  3. Choose Music > Settings.
  4. Open General and select Sync Library.
  5. Wait while the Music app updates the cloud library. The status appears at the bottom of the sidebar.
  6. Repeat the account check and enable Sync Library on your other devices.

Keep the Mac connected to the internet while the initial update completes. You can continue using the computer, but a large library may take a while to process.

On a Windows PC

The current Apple Music app for Windows uses these steps:

  1. Open the Apple Music app.
  2. Confirm the signed-in Apple Account at the bottom of the sidebar.
  3. Choose the Sidebar Actions button.
  4. Select Settings > General.
  5. Turn on Sync Library.
  6. Wait for the cloud library to update, then enable the setting on your other devices.

If you are using an older version of iTunes for Windows, look for Edit > Preferences > General and the setting named iCloud Music Library. The exact menu can vary by iTunes version.

On an iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the Apple Music app and check the account under its account settings.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Music.
  3. Turn on Sync Library.
  4. Confirm that the device uses the same Apple Account as the computer and other devices.

The device needs an internet connection to retrieve the cloud library. Once music appears, you can download albums, songs, or playlists for offline listening.

On Android

  1. Install or open the Apple Music app.
  2. Sign in with the Apple Account connected to your Apple Music subscription.
  3. Open the app’s music or account settings.
  4. Enable the library-sync option if it is shown in your version of the app.

Apple Music supports Android, although the wording and location of the sync control can vary by app version. If your library does not appear, sign out only after checking the account first; using a different Apple Account is a common reason for seeing an empty library.

On the web

  1. Open music.apple.com.
  2. Sign in with the Apple Account used for Apple Music.
  3. Open your library or playlists.

Apple says the synced library can be streamed on the web after Sync Library has been enabled on a Mac, Windows PC, iPhone, or iPad. The web player is useful on a computer where you do not want to install the Apple Music app, but it is not a replacement for downloading music to a device for offline playback.

What appears across devices?

A successfully synchronized library can include:

  • songs and albums added from the Apple Music catalog;
  • user-created playlists;
  • music purchased from the iTunes Store;
  • personal music matched to Apple’s catalog;
  • personal music uploaded when no suitable catalog match exists;
  • some music videos and playlists containing music videos; and
  • smart playlists and their rules, with the rules applied on the computer or device where content is downloaded.

Apple’s Windows documentation describes a cloud library limit of up to 100,000 songs, excluding iTunes Store purchases, with individual files no larger than 200 MB. Matching can represent a song at iTunes Plus quality, while uploaded or otherwise unmatched music remains at its original quality. These limits and results do not mean that every file will be accepted or that every version will match exactly.

What Sync Library does not do

  • It does not create a conventional USB copy. Normal Apple Music syncing happens through the cloud.
  • It is not a backup. A cloud library is not the same as an independent archive of your original audio files.
  • It does not preserve every original version automatically. A live catalog version may replace or represent a matched personal recording.
  • It does not make every song available in every country. Catalog licensing and transfer features vary by region.
  • It does not merge family members into one library. With Family Sharing, each person has a personal library, recommendations, and playlists rather than one combined household library.

Purchased music, CDs, and personal audio files

iTunes Store purchases

Music purchased from the iTunes Store can generally be redownloaded on authorized Apple devices and Windows PCs when you use the Apple Account that made the purchase. If a purchase is missing, do not assume Sync Library deleted it: verify the purchasing account and the computer’s authorization.

Imported CDs and other local files

Add locally stored audio to the Music app or iTunes library on the computer where it lives. Eligible files may then be matched against Apple’s catalog or uploaded. Matching is convenient, but it is not identical to preserving the original file: a match may point to Apple’s version, and an unmatched file may be uploaded subject to Apple’s format, size, and catalog rules.

Keep the source files and a backup even after they appear on another device. If the file is later moved or deleted on the source computer, the cloud update may report that the original cannot be found.

Fix songs or playlists that are missing

Work through these checks in order rather than immediately switching Sync Library off and on.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the Apple Account. Compare the account shown on every device with the account connected to the subscription and any relevant purchases.
  2. Check Sync Library everywhere. A device with the setting disabled will not receive the cloud library in the normal way.
  3. Check the internet connection. Leave the source computer online while the library is being processed.
  4. Inspect cloud status on the source computer. In the Music app or iTunes, show the Cloud Status and Cloud Download columns if they are hidden. These columns identify whether a local track is waiting, matched, uploaded, unavailable, or affected by a file problem.
  5. Update the cloud library from the source computer first. After it finishes, update or reopen the Music app on the other computer or device.
  6. Recheck the exact version. Search for the artist, album, and song title. A catalog replacement may have a different edition, explicit label, or release date.
  7. Use the reset step only if necessary. Turn Sync Library off and back on across devices as a last resort, not as the first fix.

Common cloud-status messages

Status Meaning What to do
Waiting The local song is waiting to sync. Keep the source computer online and update the cloud library again.
Exclamation point The original file cannot be located. Find or restore the file at its original location, or re-import it before trying again.
No longer available The version was removed from the Apple Music catalog. Search for another edition, delete the unavailable entry, and add the replacement if appropriate.
Grayed-out explicit song Content restrictions may be set to Clean. Review Music content restrictions and allow Explicit content if that is appropriate.
Purchased song unavailable The device may be using the wrong account or the computer may not be authorized. Check the purchasing Apple Account and authorize the computer when prompted.

Before turning Sync Library off and on

Disabling Sync Library removes downloaded music from devices that rely on the subscription cloud library. It can also require a lengthy rebuild, particularly for a large collection. Confirm that your local files are backed up and that you know which music comes from the Apple Music catalog before using this reset.

Can you sync without Apple Music or iTunes Match?

Yes, but the alternative is manual device syncing—not Sync Library.

On Windows, Apple’s manual workflow uses the Apple Devices app and a USB/USB-C or Wi-Fi connection. This is appropriate for compatible music files that you own locally and want to copy to a device. It does not provide the same cloud library across all devices.

There is an important limitation: Apple Music subscription songs cannot be transferred through the separate manual-sync workflow while Sync Library is enabled. To use manual syncing, you must turn Sync Library off, and subscription catalog music is not transferred by that method. A cable is therefore optional for manual syncing and unnecessary for normal cloud synchronization. If you need one for a wired iPhone-to-Windows connection, use a USB-C cable for iPhone to PC that supports data rather than charging only.

What happens if you cancel Apple Music?

When an Apple Music subscription ends, music added or downloaded from the Apple Music catalog is removed from synced devices. Related subscription-based playlists and library access are also affected. The original computer may still retain local files it downloaded or imported, and iTunes Store purchases remain available, but the subscription library should not be treated as an archive.

Moving playlists from another music service

Apple provides a transfer workflow for saved songs and user-created playlists from supported third-party services. It requires an Apple Music subscription and Sync Library. Apple compares items with its catalog and may offer an alternate version if an exact match is unavailable.

After the initial transfer, Apple says you have 30 days to review unmatched items. Service-created playlists may not transfer, and availability depends on the country or region. Review the results rather than assuming every song, edition, or playlist transferred exactly.

A practical backup plan

  1. Keep the original Music or iTunes library on the computer where it is maintained.
  2. Use Time Machine or another backup system to copy the library and its media files to storage outside the computer’s internal disk.
  3. Check that the backup actually contains imported CDs, recordings, and other personal files—not merely shortcuts or cloud placeholders.
  4. Only then enable, disable, or rebuild Sync Library.
  5. Periodically test that a few files can be restored.

An external hard drive, external SSD, or network backup can all be appropriate depending on library size, speed, portability, and budget. None is a prerequisite for Apple Music syncing; the purpose is recovery if the source computer or cloud library cannot provide the original file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a USB cable to sync Apple Music between devices?

No. Sync Library normally synchronizes through the internet. A USB or USB-C cable is relevant to the separate manual-sync workflow, especially on Windows, not to ordinary Apple Music cloud synchronization.

Why is Sync Library missing?

The most likely causes are that the device does not have an active Apple Music or iTunes Match subscription, or that it is signed in with a different Apple Account. Check both before troubleshooting the app.

Will Sync Library back up my music?

No. It can match or upload eligible personal music, but Apple explicitly warns that Apple Music is not a backup service. Keep an independent backup of imported CDs, recordings, and other local files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Family Sharing members share one Apple Music library?

No. Family members may share a subscription, but each person has a personal library, recommendations, and playlists.

What happens to downloaded Apple Music songs after cancellation?

Apple Music catalog songs and related subscription access are removed from synced devices after the subscription ends. iTunes Store purchases and locally owned files are treated separately.

The Bottom Line

Use Sync Library for cloud access and use a separate backup for ownership and recovery. Sign in with the same Apple Account, maintain an Apple Music or iTunes Match subscription, enable Sync Library on each device, and give the source library time to finish updating. If a track is missing, diagnose the account, setting, connection, cloud status, source file, and catalog availability in that order.
