To change videos without ending a YouTube livestream, keep the same encoder session running and switch the media inside it. In OBS Studio, use a VLC Video source for a prepared playlist that plays in order or loops, or switch between prepared scenes when an operator chooses what goes live. This avoids ending and recreating the YouTube event for each change, but it cannot guarantee a stream without buffering, dropped frames, encoder failures, or platform interruptions.
Choose the switching method that fits your stream
| Method | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| OBS VLC Video playlist | A fixed sequence of local videos, or a playlist that loops or shuffles. | VLC must be installed, and you should test the playlist before going live. |
| OBS scenes with Studio Mode | An operator choosing the next video, interstitial, or layout. | An operator or configured controls must trigger each change; prepare and preview scenes in advance. |
Both methods change what OBS sends while the encoder-based YouTube session remains active. YouTube supports encoder streaming, and its Live Control Room provides the stream URL and stream key used to connect an encoder. See YouTube’s live-streaming methods and encoder stream settings.
Prepare OBS and YouTube before going live
1. Set up the YouTube encoder connection
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and configure the stream for an encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key into the matching fields in OBS.
- Treat the stream key as a secret: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your channel. Do not show it in a recording or share it publicly. If you reset the key in YouTube, update the key in OBS as well.
- Choose auto-start and auto-stop behavior deliberately in the Live Control Room. Those controls affect when YouTube starts or ends the live event; they are separate from changing a video source within OBS.
Labels and layouts can change. Confirm the current options in YouTube Studio and OBS before relying on them for an unattended run.
2. Prepare the video sources
- Keep the local video files available to the computer running OBS for the duration of the stream.
- For a playlist, add an OBS VLC Video source, select the files in the intended order, and enable playlist looping if the set should repeat. VLC must be installed for this source to work. OBS documents playlist looping and shuffle controls in its media-source guidance.
- For manual changes, create a separate scene for each video or interstitial. Give scenes clear names so the operator can identify the next item without guesswork.
- Check that each source has the right framing and audio level. A scene change can change both picture and sound, so ensure the intended audio source is active and that clips do not begin unexpectedly loud.
Switch videos while the stream is live
Use a playlist for an unattended sequence
- Start the YouTube encoder session from OBS and wait until the Live Control Room preview shows the outgoing feed.
- Use the VLC Video source with the prepared playlist. Check that the expected first file plays, then confirm the next file follows the intended order.
- Let the playlist advance within the active OBS output. If enabled, looping returns playback to the start of the playlist; shuffle changes the order instead of preserving a fixed sequence.
This is the simpler fit when the program is a fixed rotation. It does not by itself guarantee that the computer, OBS, local files, network, or YouTube connection will remain available indefinitely.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use Studio Mode for operator-controlled changes
- In OBS, prepare a scene for each video or program segment before the broadcast.
- Open Studio Mode. The Preview pane lets the operator prepare the next scene while the Program pane remains the output being sent to viewers.
- Check the next scene in Preview, then use the transition control to take it live. OBS also supports scene-switching hotkeys; configure and test them before relying on them.
Studio Mode is useful when a person needs to choose what appears next. It does not automate the choice unless you add and configure separate controls or automation.
Test and monitor before relying on a long run
- Make a short test using the actual OBS scenes or playlist, media files, audio, and YouTube encoder settings you plan to use. OBS recommends testing a configuration before relying on it.
- Check the Live Control Room preview, then verify the event can be reached from the relevant channel or watch page and on mobile.
- Monitor the outgoing picture and sound continuously when possible. A live preview alone does not prove that every viewer has a stable connection or that the stream will stay up.
- If you intend to use encoder failover, test the failover path rather than assuming it works. YouTube’s live-streaming tips cover previewing, accessibility checks, failover testing, and monitoring.
Changing media inside an active encoder session avoids intentionally ending the YouTube event for each video. It does not establish a zero-interruption guarantee, a reliability rate, or that any particular 24/7 run is supported indefinitely.

Set the audience correctly for children’s content
If the livestream is directed to children, accurately designate it as “made for kids” in YouTube Studio. Do not change the audience setting just to retain features. YouTube says made-for-kids content loses or restricts features including live chat and live chat donations, comments, notifications, personalized advertising, and saving to playlists. Review YouTube’s made-for-kids guidance and verify the current setting for the stream.
Plan the program without relying on live chat or notifications as engagement tools when those features are unavailable for the content’s audience setting.

Common problems and practical checks
- The playlist source is blank or will not play: confirm VLC is installed, the selected files still exist at their saved locations, and the source is configured with the intended media.
- The wrong video appears after a change: verify the playlist order, or check the scene name in Preview before taking it live. Test hotkeys to ensure they select the intended scene.
- Viewers hear silence or unexpected audio: inspect the audio sources and levels in each scene, then test a transition while monitoring the output.
- YouTube is not receiving the OBS feed: compare the stream URL and key in OBS with the current values in the Live Control Room. If the key was reset, replace the saved key in OBS.
- The live event ends when you meant only to change videos: keep the encoder session active and switch the source or scene within OBS rather than stopping the stream or creating a new event.
- The stream buffers, drops frames, or disconnects: these are not solved simply by switching scenes. Check the connection, encoder, and YouTube status and use the Live Control Room preview and monitoring guidance to diagnose the issue.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a home computer and connection to run OBS continuously, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos.
