To change prerecorded gaming videos without ending the YouTube live event, keep OBS connected and switch the active scene or content inside OBS. YouTube’s encoder workflow treats stopping the encoder’s content as ending the stream, so stopping and restarting OBS for each video is not the right routine. A scene change can keep the encoder connection running, but it does not by itself guarantee a perfectly gapless handoff: prepare and preview the changeover before relying on it.
What “without a gap” means in this setup
YouTube receives one live feed from your encoder. For this workflow, OBS sends that feed using the YouTube stream URL and stream key; the change between prerecorded videos happens inside OBS while the feed continues. YouTube does not provide a special gapless rerun-switch feature in the cited encoder instructions, so treat continuity as an OBS setup and monitoring task, not a YouTube setting. YouTube’s encoder instructions and the OBS overview describe the relevant roles.
A live encoder connection can remain active through a scene switch, but viewers may still see a transition, a brief blank frame, or a content pause if the outgoing and incoming sources are not ready. Test the exact handoff with your files and OBS version. Do not promise viewers a frame-perfect or audio-perfect changeover unless you have verified it in your own setup.
Prepare the YouTube live event and OBS scenes
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and open its encoder setup details. Follow YouTube’s encoder workflow to obtain the stream URL and stream key.
- Configure OBS’s connection. Enter the YouTube server/stream URL and stream key in the corresponding encoder fields. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in a recording, screenshot, or stream, and replace it if it is exposed.
- Make a scene for each handoff state. In OBS, arrange the rerun videos as scenes or otherwise set up the content so each intended change can be made with OBS scene controls. Give scenes clear names, such as “Run 1” and “Run 2,” so the operator can identify the next scene quickly.
- Choose how to switch. Use OBS’s scene transition controls, a quick transition, or a configured hotkey. If using a hotkey, check its assignment and test it while the stream is not live; a regular keyboard is sufficient, and optional shortcut hardware is not required.
- Check the actual outgoing feed. Start sending the encoder feed and confirm that it appears in YouTube’s preview before going live. Check picture and sound, then rehearse the scene switch in the same OBS version and with the same files you intend to use.
Switch videos while keeping the encoder live
- Start the OBS output to the YouTube event and confirm the incoming preview is correct.
- When it is time to change videos, activate the next prepared scene using the tested OBS transition or hotkey. Leave the encoder output running; do not stop and restart it as the normal way to move between videos.
- Watch the outgoing feed around the changeover. Confirm the new video and its audio have begun, and check that the previous scene is no longer the active content.
- Repeat for later videos. If the handoff is unattended, first verify the precise file restart, looping, and next-item behavior supported by the installed OBS version. The cited OBS overview documents scene transitions and hotkeys, but does not establish which media-source options or automation settings will produce a reliable playlist in every version.
OBS documents scenes, transitions, quick transitions, and hotkeys in its overview guide. Verify any media-source automation separately in the documentation for the OBS version you use rather than assuming a particular checkbox, restart behavior, or automatic next-file feature.

Why stopping and restarting is a poor changeover method
YouTube’s encoder guidance says to end a stream by stopping content from the encoder. If you stop the encoder between every prerecorded video, you are ending the current stream rather than simply changing its content. That interrupts the one-event workflow and can require starting or reconnecting again. For a continuous event, keep the encoder sending and make the content change inside OBS. YouTube’s instructions explain the encoder-side end-of-stream behavior.
Settings that affect viewers but do not switch scenes
YouTube’s live settings include latency and DVR controls. Latency is the delay between capture and playback; YouTube notes that lower latency can mean more buffering. DVR lets viewers pause and rewind. These affect how viewers experience a stream, but they do not trigger OBS scene changes or make a media-source handoff gapless. YouTube also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archival detail, not a way to bridge a stopped encoder or guarantee continuity. If your rerun may exceed that duration, do not rely on the under-12-hour statement as a promise about archiving a longer stream. YouTube’s encoder help describes the archive condition.
Troubleshoot a failed or rough handoff
- The YouTube event ends or disconnects at the switch: Check whether OBS output was stopped rather than whether only the active scene changed. Keep the encoder output running while switching scenes.
- The preview goes blank or shows the wrong video: Return to the OBS scene setup and rehearse the exact transition. Confirm the intended scene is active and that its content is present before depending on the changeover.
- The picture changes but audio does not: Check the audio in the outgoing feed during a test switch. The cited scene-control guidance does not establish automatic audio handoff behavior for every media-source configuration.
- A file does not restart or advance as expected: Verify the media-source behavior and any automation in the installed OBS version. Do not assume looping or next-item behavior based only on scene switching.
- The encoder does not reach YouTube: Recheck the event’s stream URL and key in OBS, then follow YouTube’s encoder setup and preview steps. If a key was exposed, replace it before streaming again.
- Viewers report buffering: Consider the YouTube latency setting and its trade-off: lower latency may increase buffering. This is separate from whether OBS switched scenes correctly.
