Add each clip as a Media Source, or use a VLC Video playlist for sequential playback, then switch OBS scenes while the same feed continues to YouTube. The connection can stay live, though a transition is not guaranteed to be free of a brief blank, frozen frame, or audio issue—rehearse your files and transitions before broadcasting.
How switching works
YouTube receives a continuous feed from your encoder. The stream URL and stream key connect OBS to YouTube; OBS scenes determine what the encoder sends at a given moment. Change the active scene or video source in OBS and you can change the program content without ending the YouTube event. You do not need to stop and restart the stream for an ordinary content change. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and the OBS Overview Guide.
Keeping the encoder session live is different from guaranteeing a perfect transition. A source may take time to load or decode, and audio routing or system performance can affect what viewers receive. OBS and YouTube recommend testing and monitoring; their documentation does not promise frame-perfect, artifact-free switching on every setup.
Set up prerecorded videos in OBS
1. Connect OBS to the YouTube event
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and set up a stream for an encoder.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that setup.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube if offered, and enter or connect the stream credentials. Interface labels can vary by software version; use YouTube’s current encoder instructions if the setup screen differs.
Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish or share it. The key lets the encoder send its feed to your YouTube stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Add an individual video with Media Source
- In the OBS Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source.
- Name the source, then select the local video file. OBS documents support for common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM; the file still needs to decode reliably on your computer.
- Choose whether playback should restart when the source becomes active, whether it should loop, and whether it should hide when playback ends. The right settings depend on whether the clip is a one-time segment or recurring content.
- Fit or crop the source in the preview as needed, and check its audio level in the OBS mixer.
OBS notes that enabling Close file when inactive can free memory, but reopening the file when the source becomes visible may create a short delay. Leave the source loaded if you need it ready for a fast return, then test the resulting memory use and transition on your machine. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.
3. Use VLC Video for an ordered playlist
- Install VLC with the same architecture as OBS. OBS specifically requires 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source and add the files in the order you want them to play.
- Set loop or shuffle as appropriate, then check the playlist’s end-of-file and next-item behavior in a rehearsal.
VLC Video is useful when you want a list to advance without manually changing scenes for every file. Use Media Source instead for direct, individual control of a clip. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation for source behavior and controls.

Switch videos while the stream stays live
Make a scene for each segment
For explicit manual control, create a scene for each program segment, give scenes clear names, and add the corresponding video source to each. A holding scene can show the current video while the next source is prepared. Keep the desired scene active in the preview/program workflow you use, then switch to the next scene using OBS’s scene controls or a configured hotkey. OBS describes scenes as the layouts used in a stream and supports scene switching by hotkey in its Overview Guide.
Rehearse before going live
- Use the same computer, files, scene arrangement, and transition method planned for the broadcast.
- Test representative sections with motion and sound. Watch for a black frame, frozen video, delayed source start, missing audio, or overlapping audio.
- Preview in YouTube Live Control Room, check the actual watch page, and monitor stream health before and during the event. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring in its live streaming guidance.
- If you make changes to source settings or replace files, rehearse the affected transitions again.
When the event is over, end it in Live Control Room and stop the encoder feed as YouTube directs. A scene switch is not the same as ending the event; see YouTube’s encoder instructions.

Choose between a single video source and a playlist
| Need | OBS approach | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Play one local clip, with the operator choosing when to change content | Media Source, usually in its own scene | Restart-on-activation, loop and hide behavior; a closed inactive file may take time to reload. |
| Advance through a sequence of local files | VLC Video playlist | VLC is installed with architecture matching OBS; confirm ordering, loop or shuffle, and next-item behavior. |
| Run manually cued program segments | Separate scenes and scene controls or hotkeys | Name scenes clearly and rehearse the intended sequence and timing. |
Troubleshoot gaps, freezes, and audio problems
A switch shows a blank or frozen frame
- Check whether the source was closed while inactive; OBS warns that reloading it can cause a short delay.
- Confirm the intended source is present and active in the scene you switched to.
- Test whether the file’s decoding catches up when activated. Rehearse with the actual files and transition timing rather than assuming every format or system behaves alike.
Audio disappears or overlaps
- Check the source’s audio behavior and the OBS mixer during a test transition.
- Verify whether both scenes or sources contribute audio during the switch, and adjust the scene/source arrangement to produce the intended result.
- Test material with sound similar to the actual program. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing audio as well as movement; there is no single audio-mixing configuration established for every OBS scene design.
Some viewers do not see the new segment immediately
YouTube DVR lets viewers pause and rewind. A viewer watching behind the live edge may still see earlier content even though the encoder and live stream have continued normally. This alone does not show that OBS disconnected; check the live edge and stream health before diagnosing an interruption. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
Copyright and the videos you broadcast
Being prerecorded does not make a video exempt from YouTube’s rules. Make sure you have the rights or permission needed for the video, music, and other material you stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-streaming policies before broadcasting. A successful scene switch only changes the encoder output; it does not establish that the content is authorized or eligible to remain available.

End the YouTube event correctly
When your broadcast is finished, end the event in Live Control Room and stop the encoder feed as YouTube directs. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that is YouTube’s current guidance, accessed in 2026, rather than a guarantee about every stream or account. Check the event’s archive status in Studio afterward. YouTube encoder instructions.
