To switch podcast episodes manually during a YouTube live stream, put each episode in its own OBS scene and assign a hotkey to each scene. For a sequence that should play without manual switching, add the files to an OBS VLC Video playlist instead. YouTube’s encoder workflow supports OBS; episode selection and playback are managed inside OBS.
Choose how you want episodes to change

You can combine these approaches: use a Media Source for an episode in a scene, then switch between episode scenes with hotkeys and Studio Mode.

Create a scene for each episode
In OBS, create a scene for each episode, or for each episode-specific layout if the artwork, title text, or other on-screen elements change. A scene is the composition viewers see, built from the sources in that scene.

Add the episode file
In the relevant scene, add a Media Source for a single local recording. OBS’s Media Sources guide lists common video types including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio types including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Available formats may vary by OBS version and setup, so confirm that your installed version can play each file.

Review the source’s playback controls. Options include restarting playback when the source becomes active and hiding it after playback ends. Choose behavior that fits your scene changes; a source that restarts on activation may begin the episode from the start when you return to that scene.

Assign a hotkey to each scene
Open Settings → Hotkeys. Find the scene-switch action for each episode scene and assign an unused key. OBS documents hotkeys for switching to a specific scene; exact labels can vary by installed version. Avoid assigning the same key to conflicting actions.

Switch during the broadcast
Press the hotkey for the episode scene you want to show. If you use OBS’s normal scene switching, the selected scene becomes live according to the transition behavior you have configured.
Use Studio Mode to preview the next episode
Studio Mode keeps the live scene separate from the scene you are preparing. OBS explains that it lets you change scenes in the background without viewers seeing those changes. Turn on Studio Mode, select and adjust the next episode scene in the preview/edit area, then use Transition or a configured Quick Transition to take it live. This adds a deliberate preview-and-transition step rather than immediately putting each scene change on air.

Play episodes in sequence with a VLC Video playlist

Install VLC and add the source
Add a VLC Video source in OBS and populate its playlist with the episode files in the intended order. If VLC Video is unavailable, install VLC. OBS’s guide says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

Set order and repeat behavior
Keep Shuffle Playlist off to preserve the listed order. Choose whether Loop Playlist should be on or off; OBS documents it as on by default. With looping disabled, decide what viewers should see or hear after the final item ends.

Check what happens when the source is hidden
OBS documents the VLC Video defaults as stopping playback when the source is not visible and restarting it when visible. Check the source’s visibility behavior and test what happens when you change scenes: depending on the setup, playback may pause or restart when the source is hidden and shown again.
Rehearse the show before going live
- Confirm that every episode file plays and that the order, titles, and artwork are correct.
- Test each scene hotkey and, if used, the Studio Mode preview and transition.
- Listen to the actual audio routing while switching scenes or running the playlist. Check for silence, unexpectedly repeated audio, or overlapping sources.
- Run through the playlist end behavior and any scene change that hides the media source.
- Test OBS and the stream before the public broadcast. OBS recommends testing scenes and stream operation before a first live stream.
- Confirm you have the rights and permissions needed to rebroadcast each recorded episode. The OBS switching workflow does not determine whether a recording is cleared for reuse.
Connect OBS to YouTube
YouTube’s encoder instructions describe encoder-based live streams for productions such as those using multiple cameras and microphones, and YouTube’s verified encoder list includes OBS as open-source software available at no charge. The destination setup is handled through YouTube’s live-stream workflow; switching episodes remains an OBS task. Follow the current YouTube instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder and confirm the stream is ready before relying on hotkeys or playlist playback.
