Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Keep the same YouTube live event and encoder running, then change the audio OBS sends: mute or hide the narration for a quiet period, and turn it back on when guidance resumes. Decide first whether “silence” means no voice with ambience continuing or no audio at all; those require different mute controls.
Choose what “silence” means for your stream
There are two useful quiet states. In a voice-free period, narration stops but background ambience—such as soft music or nature audio—continues. In true silence, all program audio stops. Build and test the state you actually intend; muting only the microphone or narration will not silence other audio sources.
Choose a control setup
| Setup | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Separate OBS scenes | A host manually switching between guided and quiet periods. | Simple to understand, but requires a scene change or configured hotkey. |
| Separate sources in one scene | Keeping ambience on while narration is muted. | Gives independent control, but you must mute the right source and check for duplicate audio. |
| VLC playlist source | Playing prerecorded guidance as an ordered sequence. | Requires VLC installed; configure playlist looping and check how the source behaves when hidden. |
For prerecorded guidance, OBS can play a file through a Media Source; common supported audio formats include MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. A VLC Video Source can handle a playlist. For live guidance, add a dedicated audio input for the microphone. A USB microphone is optional and relevant only if you speak live; prerecorded guidance does not require one.
Set up the OBS scenes or sources
- Add your program sources. In OBS, add the prerecorded file as a Media Source, or add a VLC Video Source for a playlist. For live narration, add an Audio Input Capture source for your microphone. Add any ambience separately if you want it to continue during voice-free intervals.
- Create the states. For the scene method, make one scene for “Guided” and one for “Silence,” with the required sources in each. For the single-scene method, keep narration and ambience as separate sources so they can be controlled independently.
- Set the quiet state. To retain ambience, mute or hide only the narration source. To create true silence, mute every source that contributes program audio. Use the OBS mixer mute control and level meters to confirm the intended audio state.
- Choose manual controls if you are switching live. Assign OBS hotkeys to switch scenes or control source visibility, then rehearse them before the event. OBS supports hotkeys for scene switching and push-to-mute. Keep the controls distinct enough to avoid accidental changes.
- Check source behavior at transitions. For playlists, verify what happens when each file ends, whether the playlist loops or advances as intended, and how the source behaves when its scene is hidden. Do not assume a file ending will leave the encoder running or produce the quiet state you want.
Connect OBS to the YouTube live event
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule an encoder stream and open its Live Control Room. Check the current account eligibility and controls there, since YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and interface can change.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the stream key as a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send content to your event. Do not share it publicly.
- Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview before the scheduled start. Keep both the encoder and the YouTube event active while switching scenes or source states; the change happens in OBS, not by ending and restarting the event.
YouTube Live Redirect is for moving viewers after a stream ends. It does not switch the program inside the same active event.

Rehearse the full guided-to-quiet transition
- Listen to the quiet state on the actual output path. Confirm that narration is gone and that ambience either remains or stops, as intended.
- Switch back to guidance and confirm that it resumes at the expected level without clipping, delay or an abrupt restart.
- Watch OBS’s audio meters and monitor the Live Control Room preview. YouTube Help advises creators to continuously monitor stream audio and video quality.
- Avoid capturing the same audio device both globally and again as a scene source; OBS warns that duplicating device capture can cause echo.
- Start the encoder before the event and leave enough upload bandwidth headroom. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% beyond the total stream bitrate.
- Test file boundaries and playlist behavior, and make sure a source ending does not cause the stream or encoder to stop.
YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archiving detail, not a guarantee of uninterrupted operation or a recommendation for an indefinite meditation stream.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Voice remains audible in the quiet state. | A different narration or microphone source is still active, or the wrong source was muted. | Inspect the OBS mixer and scene sources; mute every narration path while leaving ambience on only if desired. |
| All sound disappears, including intended ambience. | The ambience source was muted along with narration, or it is not present in the quiet scene. | Separate narration and ambience sources and verify that ambience is active in the voice-free state. |
| Echo or doubled sound. | The same device may be captured globally and as a scene source. | Remove the duplicate capture path and monitor the output again. |
| The playlist ends or changes unexpectedly. | File-end, looping, advancement or hidden-source behavior has not been configured or rehearsed. | Test the VLC playlist’s loop and visibility settings, including the transition at each file boundary. |
| The YouTube preview has no signal or stops updating. | The encoder may not be sending, the event may not be active, or the connection may be unstable. | Check OBS connection status and the Live Control Room; confirm that the correct stream key and event are selected. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want prerecorded videos to keep a YouTube channel live without keeping a home computer or OBS running, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream a camera feed. This is a different workflow from using OBS to make live, moment-to-moment switches during an active event.
