Spotify’s payment-method guidance explains that available options depend on the account’s country or region.

U.S. plans and trial eligibility
Spotify’s U.S. plan page displayed the prices and offer terms below when checked on August 8, 2026. Prices and promotions can change, so use the offer shown during checkout as the current terms. The displayed student promotion ended August 11, 2026 and should not be assumed to remain available.
| Plan | Price shown August 8, 2026 | Accounts | Conditions shown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium Individual | $0 for 1 month, then $12.99/month | 1 | Displayed trial for people who have not tried Premium before. |
| Premium Student | $0 for 3 months, then $6.99/month | 1 verified student account | Eligible students; displayed offer ended August 11, 2026. Hulu access subject to eligibility. |
| Premium Duo | $18.99/month | 2 | Both users must reside at the same address. |
| Premium Family | $21.99/month | Up to 6 | Members must reside at the same address; parental controls are available. |
The same page showed the button labels “Try 1 month for $0,” “Try 3 months for $0,” “Get Premium Duo” and “Get Premium Family,” respectively. These are page labels, not a guarantee that the same buttons or offers will appear for every account.

Who can use a free trial?
Spotify’s free-trial eligibility guidance says an account is not eligible if its user has already had a free trial, previously purchased Premium, or previously belonged to Premium Family or Duo. If a zero-price trial is offered and you accept it, it automatically renews at the advertised recurring price unless you cancel beforehand. Spotify may place a temporary authorization hold on the payment method to verify it; that hold is not the recurring subscription charge.
Taxes and the amount charged
The plan-page price may not be the final checkout total: local or state sales tax can be added. Check the amount presented at checkout and the transaction details on the receipt. See Spotify’s sales-tax guidance.
Subscribe on an iPhone or iPad
Spotify does not allow users to purchase Premium inside its iPhone or iPad app; it directs them to subscribe on the web because of Apple restrictions. Open Safari or another browser, visit spotify.com/premium, choose a plan and complete checkout there. Once the subscription is active, you can listen in the Spotify app. Details are in Spotify’s iOS subscription help.

Subscribe on Android
The usual route is Spotify’s website: choose a plan at spotify.com/premium and finish checkout. Some Android accounts use Google Play Billing. For those accounts, the Spotify app offers this plan-change path:
Recommended Free Tools
- Tap your profile picture at the top.
- Tap Settings and privacy.
- Tap Account.
- Under Your plan, tap See available plans.
- Choose a plan and follow the prompts.
Google Play Billing is a billing arrangement, not an additional Premium benefit; it changes where billing is managed and which plan-change route is available. See Spotify’s plan-change instructions.
Sign up for Premium Student
Student pricing requires verification through SheerID. The student offer and price shown in the U.S. on August 8, 2026 were time-limited; check Spotify’s current offer before starting.

You do not need to add a student email address to your Spotify account. Eligibility must be renewed every 12 months, for up to four years. If you do not renew, Spotify says the subscription continues at the full price. Student Premium cannot be paid through mobile billing or another company such as a phone or internet provider. If an existing partner billing arrangement is in place, cancel it and wait until the Spotify account returns to Free before subscribing with an eligible payment method. Renewal details are in Spotify’s student renewal guidance.
Choose a payment method
Spotify does not publish one fixed list of payment methods for every country. To see what is available for your account, open spotify.com/premium, choose a plan and review the options on the next page. Depending on location and eligibility, they may include cards, PayPal, mobile billing, Google Play Billing or other local methods. See Accepted payment methods.

Change plans if you already have Premium
If Spotify bills you directly, open your Spotify account page, go to Manage your subscription, select Change plan and choose the new plan. Spotify says the change takes effect immediately; if you are on a free trial, payment for the new plan is taken immediately. These instructions are on Spotify’s change-plan page.
If Change plan is missing, a partner—such as a mobile or internet provider—may manage your subscription. Cancel through that provider and wait for the Spotify account to return to Free before subscribing directly on Spotify. Spotify does not directly control partner billing.

A pending charge appears, but Premium is not active
The transaction may be a temporary authorization hold rather than a completed subscription payment. Spotify says that if payment fails, the pending amount is released when the pending status expires and the bank returns the funds. Check the transaction with your bank if it remains unresolved.
Your payment is declined
Check that your payment method has sufficient funds, is valid, is registered in the same country as your Spotify account, permits online, international and recurring transactions, and can complete any required bank identity verification. If it still fails, Spotify suggests retrying in a private or incognito browser window, waiting a few hours or using another method. See Spotify’s failed-payment help.
Mobile billing fails
Spotify lists an incorrectly entered phone number, insufficient mobile-account credit, a temporarily unavailable carrier or wallet, and a temporary connection problem as possible causes. Try again after a few days, use a private or incognito window, or select another payment method. See mobile-billing help.
A Duo or Family member loses access
Spotify’s U.S. plan terms require Duo and Family members to live at the same address. Spotify may ask a member to verify the address; access can be lost if verification fails or the plan manager removes the member. Check the U.S. plan terms or Spotify Support.

Quick Recap
Two details to know before you start
- Gift cards: Spotify says gift cards are no longer available for purchase in the U.S. Previously purchased cards can still be redeemed, generally only for Premium Individual. See Spotify’s gift-card guidance.
- Canceling a free trial: Canceling during a zero-price trial switches the account to Spotify Free immediately; Premium does not remain active through the trial’s scheduled end, and Spotify says the trial cannot be reactivated. See Spotify’s cancellation guidance.
