YouTube turns this on by default for streams started there; its vertical version is initially a center crop of the horizontal picture. Check the vertical preview and adjust the layout before going live, or configure a third-party encoder to send a separate vertical output using RTMP(S) and a second stream key.
Before you start
- Make sure live streaming is enabled for your channel. First-time activation can take at least 24 hours.
- Your channel must not have a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Check channel status before scheduling.
- Use YouTube Studio on a computer for the Live Control Room dual-format workflow described here. YouTube supports other general ways to go live, but its dual-format setup instructions focus on Live Control Room or a third-party encoder.

Set up YouTube’s built-in dual stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. In Live Control Room, schedule a stream or open one you are managing.
- Open the scheduled stream’s Manage view and inspect the vertical preview. By default, YouTube derives the vertical image from the horizontal stream using a center crop.
- Choose a vertical layout suited to the content: Center crop, Fit to phone width, or Stacked. Adjust zoom and position, then check that the important subject matter remains visible in the vertical preview. You can continue editing the layout while live.
- Start the stream from Live Control Room. To turn off the built-in dual stream, open Stream settings and switch off Dual stream.
Use a third-party encoder for a separate vertical output
An encoder workflow is useful when you want to compose the vertical picture independently rather than rely on a layout derived by YouTube. Configure both outputs before starting the broadcast: YouTube says vertical format cannot be added after the stream has started.
- In Live Control Room, open the stream’s Stream tab.
- In the vertical preview, open the Auto menu and choose Encoder.
- Select RTMP(S), then select the second stream key for the vertical output.
- Configure the encoder to send the horizontal output to the horizontal stream key and the vertical output to the vertical key. Confirm each output’s orientation and preview before going live.
- Begin the stream from YouTube Studio. If you need to change the layout or key assignment, do so before starting the broadcast.
What viewers see—and what changes between formats
YouTube uses one shared stream URL and sends one go-live notification to subscribers. Viewers watching in the YouTube mobile app’s Shorts feed see the vertical version; other viewers see the horizontal version. The current YouTube Help instructions say both formats share the same live chat.

Vertical live can appear in the mobile app’s scrollable vertical live feed and Shorts browsing. Scheduled live streams and Premieres do not appear in that feed, and the vertical live feed is currently available in the YouTube app, not on tablets.
The formats do not offer identical discovery and creator features. YouTube’s vertical and horizontal feature comparison identifies vertical-feed discovery and scrolling as vertical strengths. It lists clickable links in chat and the channel description, live pre-roll and mid-roll ads, 4K broadcast bitrate, Premieres, and Live Redirect for horizontal streams. Memberships are listed for both formats; fan-funding tools depend on eligibility. Check YouTube’s current comparison for the feature implications that matter to your channel.

Read the analytics for each format
Live Control Room initially shows combined metrics for the two formats during and after the broadcast. YouTube makes separate vertical metrics available 24 hours after the stream ends.
- In YouTube Studio, open Content → Live and select the ended stream.
- Open Analytics, then Advanced mode.
- Use Playback location to select Vertical live feed and review the vertical-only reporting.

Troubleshooting
- The dual-format option is unavailable: Confirm live streaming is enabled and that the channel has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. If you requested live access for the first time, activation can take at least 24 hours.
- The vertical picture cuts off the subject: Review the vertical preview in Manage and adjust zoom or position. Try fit to phone width or stacked instead of center crop if the subject or essential graphics do not fit.
- The encoder’s vertical output does not appear: Verify that the vertical output is sent to the second stream key selected for vertical, while the horizontal output goes to the horizontal key. Configure this before going live; YouTube says vertical cannot be added once the stream has started.
- You cannot find vertical-only analytics: YouTube’s separate vertical metrics appear 24 hours after the stream ends. Until then, Live Control Room reports combined metrics.
- You expect a scheduled stream to appear in the vertical feed: Scheduled live streams and Premieres are excluded from that feed; it is available in the YouTube app, not currently on tablets.
