You can run a continuous waterfall-sounds stream by having FFmpeg read audio files on a Linux VPS and publish the encoded audio to an Icecast server. The command is only one part of the setup: you also need permission to distribute the recordings, an Icecast mount and credentials, a way to keep the process running after failures or reboots, and enough outbound network capacity for your listeners.
How the setup works
FFmpeg reads an audio source, optionally encodes it, and sends the output to a streaming destination. In this design, Icecast receives the stream and makes it available to listeners. This is an audio stream, not a video broadcast. “24/7” describes the intended continuous operation; one VPS and one streaming process can still fail, so plan for restarts and monitoring rather than assuming uninterrupted uptime.
Prepare the source audio and server
Check rights before uploading
Use recordings and compositions you have permission to distribute continuously. Owning a copy of a sound recording does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. The applicable rights depend on the specific recording, composition, licences and distribution circumstances; the technical FFmpeg documentation does not settle the legal position in India.

Verify FFmpeg capabilities on the VPS
Install an FFmpeg build that can decode your source format and encode the format you intend to send. Builds vary, so do not assume a codec is available simply because it appears in an example. Check the installed release’s help and encoder information, and confirm options against documentation for that release. Set up an Icecast mount
Configure an Icecast server and a mountpoint reachable by listeners. FFmpeg documents the general destination form as icecast://[username[:password]@]server:port/mountpoint, along with settings for stream metadata, content type and TLS. The exact account, mountpoint, port, authentication and TLS arrangement depends on your Icecast configuration.

Treat the password as a secret. Avoid putting real credentials in a public article, shared script, shell history or logs. Use a protected service configuration or another secret-handling method appropriate to your server.
Build and test the FFmpeg publishing command
There is no single command that is guaranteed to work for every VPS: the correct input options, codec, bitrate, channel layout and Icecast details depend on your files and installed build. Start from this illustrative shape, replace the placeholders, and verify each option with the documentation and help for your installed FFmpeg version:

It is not a tested deployment recipe or a universal quality recommendation. Choose an encoder and bitrate that your build supports and that suit your listeners; no bitrate is prescribed here. For TLS, use the protocol and server configuration supported by your installed FFmpeg and Icecast versions rather than assuming the example’s destination details apply unchanged.
- Put an authorized source file on the VPS. Confirm its path and that the FFmpeg build can read its format.
- Check the encoder and options. Consult the installed FFmpeg help and encoder information, then use version-matched documentation. FFmpeg’s general command reference explains the input and output structure, while the protocol reference describes Icecast-specific options.
- Substitute your Icecast details securely. Use the actual host, port, mountpoint and credentials, but do not publish or log the password.
- Run a short manual test. Connect with a listener client from outside the VPS. Confirm that audio is audible, the mount accepts the stream, and any configured metadata and TLS behave as intended.
- Only then configure continuous operation. Test restart and reconnect behavior in your target environment before relying on it.
Make playback continuous and recoverable
A single audio file is not automatically an endless programme. Decide how the audio should repeat or how multiple files should be sequenced, then verify that the chosen FFmpeg input or playlist method behaves as intended with your files and installed version. No particular looping command or playlist recipe is established here, so treat any example you find as something to test—not a guarantee.

For a 24/7 service, arrange for the process to start after a VPS reboot and restart after it exits, using a supervisor suited to your system. Monitor the process and the Icecast mount, keep enough disk space for source files and logs, and check that the service can reconnect if the network or receiving server interrupts the connection. A restart policy can recover from some process failures; it cannot eliminate VPS, network or Icecast outages.

Outbound traffic grows with the encoded bitrate and the time listeners spend connected. For a rough estimate, multiply the chosen audio bitrate by total listener-hours, then convert bits to bytes and allow for protocol overhead. As an illustration of the arithmetic, a stream encoded at 128 kilobits per second sends roughly 57.6 megabytes per listener-hour before overhead, using decimal units. The example bitrate is not a recommendation.

Capacity depends on concurrent listeners, the VPS network and transfer limits, and the Icecast server’s own capacity. Check the provider’s current India-region terms and limits for the particular plan you choose; no VPS provider or plan capacity is established here.
Troubleshoot common failures
- FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder or format: the installed build may not include the requested encoder or input support. Inspect its available encoders and formats, then choose supported options or install a suitable build.
- Icecast rejects the connection: check the host, port, mountpoint, username and password against the server configuration. Also confirm that the server accepts the selected output format and that any firewall rules allow the required connection.
- The stream connects but listeners hear silence or distortion: confirm that the input file plays locally, that the chosen audio mapping and codec are appropriate, and that a listener client supports the stream format. Test from outside the VPS.
- The stream stops after a reboot or process exit: configure and test a supervisor or service restart policy. Verify both boot-time startup and recovery after a deliberate test stop.
- Listeners cannot connect or playback drops: check Icecast reachability, server and VPS network limits, firewall configuration, and available transfer capacity. Test reconnect behavior rather than assuming automatic recovery.
- Credentials appear in shell history or logs: rotate exposed credentials and move them to a protected configuration mechanism. Avoid including secrets in copied commands or public troubleshooting output.
