You can usually watch a video opened in VLC on a Samsung Smart TV, but VLC typically runs on your phone, tablet, or computer—not on the TV itself. Choose a method based on your source device: Smart View for Galaxy devices, AirPlay for compatible Apple devices, wireless display or HDMI for a PC, or VLC direct casting when a compatible receiver is available.
Choose the right connection method
| Source device | Best first option | What the TV receives |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy phone or tablet | Samsung Smart View | A mirror of the device screen |
| Other Android phone or tablet | VLC direct casting, if a compatible receiver appears; otherwise use screen mirroring if available | Playback handed to a receiver, or a mirrored screen |
| iPhone or iPad | AirPlay on a compatible Samsung TV | Usually a mirrored screen |
| Windows 10 or 11 PC | Wireless display; HDMI if discovery fails | A mirrored PC display |
| Mac | AirPlay on a compatible TV; otherwise HDMI | A mirrored Mac display |
| PC or NAS media library | DLNA/UPnP media server | A file played through the TV’s media interface |
These methods are not interchangeable. Screen mirroring duplicates the source device’s display, so controls and notifications can appear on the TV. Direct casting sends playback to a compatible receiver, letting the phone work more like a controller. A media server makes files available for the TV to browse and play over the home network.
Check compatibility before you start
- Connect the TV and source device to the same local Wi-Fi network. Guest Wi-Fi, client isolation, or a VPN can prevent devices from finding one another.
- Turn on the TV, update its software and the source device, and install VLC from VideoLAN or the device’s official app store.
- Be ready to approve the connection or enter a code on the TV.
- Check the exact TV model’s supported video and audio formats if you plan to play files through its native media player. Samsung’s specifications vary by model: Samsung Smart TV specifications and feature support.
Most Samsung Smart TVs use the Tizen platform; Samsung’s developer documentation says its Smart TVs from 2016 onward run Tizen applications. That does not mean an Android VLC app can be installed on a Samsung TV. The usual setup is VLC on another device, with playback sent or mirrored to the television. Samsung Smart TV platform information.
Protected commercial video may not mirror. Samsung says DRM-protected content cannot be mirrored with Smart View. Use the content provider’s supported TV app or official casting method instead; VLC settings do not remove that restriction. Samsung Smart View troubleshooting.

Galaxy phone or tablet: use Smart View
Smart View is the simplest starting point for a compatible Galaxy device. It mirrors the screen rather than transferring the video file directly to the TV, so VLC remains open on the phone and phone activity can be visible on the television. Availability and menu labels vary by Galaxy model and software version. Samsung’s setup instructions are at Connect your Samsung phone or tablet to a TV with Smart View.
- Turn on the Samsung TV and connect it and the Galaxy device to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open VLC and load the video. Pause it for the moment.
- Swipe down from the top of the Galaxy screen to open Quick Settings. Swipe again if needed to see all controls.
- Tap Smart View, then select the TV.
- Tap Start now if prompted. Approve the connection on the TV or enter its PIN if requested.
- Return to VLC and start playback. Use VLC’s full-screen control and rotate the phone if needed.
To stop, open Smart View again and disconnect, or use the disconnect control in the notification panel.
Android: cast directly from VLC when a receiver is available
VLC for Android supports casting to Chromecast and streaming to UPnP renderers, but that does not guarantee that a Samsung TV will appear in VLC’s target list. A TV’s screen mirroring, DLNA/UPnP, and Google Cast support are separate features. VLC’s Android project describes its casting support at VideoLAN’s VLC for Android project.

iPhone or iPad: mirror with AirPlay
AirPlay works only if the Samsung TV model supports it and the feature is enabled. Samsung identifies compatible 2018-and-later Smart TVs, while noting that availability depends on model and region. See Samsung’s phone connection guidance.
- Connect the iPhone or iPad and the TV to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open VLC and load the video.
- Open Control Center and tap Screen Mirroring.
- Select the Samsung TV. Enter the AirPlay code shown on the TV if requested.
- Return to VLC and start playback.
- To stop, open Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring, then tap Stop Mirroring.
This route may mirror the whole device display rather than provide VLC-specific playback controls on the TV. A protected video or an unsupported format may also prevent successful playback.

Windows 10 or 11: project wirelessly or use HDMI
For wireless display, the PC needs wireless-display support and the TV must support compatible screen mirroring. Samsung’s instructions use Windows’ Project controls; the available options depend on the PC and TV. Samsung Smart View and screen-mirroring instructions.
- Turn on the TV and put it and the PC on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Press Windows + P.
- Choose Connect to a wireless display, then select the Samsung TV.
- Approve the connection on the TV if prompted.
- Open VLC on the PC, choose the video, and switch VLC to full screen.
If the TV does not appear or playback is unreliable, connect the PC to the TV with HDMI, select the corresponding HDMI input on the TV, and play the video in VLC. HDMI avoids wireless discovery and network-isolation problems, though the computer stays physically connected.
Mac: use AirPlay or HDMI
AirPlay
If both the Mac and Samsung TV support AirPlay, connect them to the same Wi-Fi network, open the Mac’s screen-mirroring or AirPlay control, and select the TV. Menu names vary by macOS version and TV model. Open VLC and play the video after the display connects.

HDMI
If AirPlay is unavailable or unstable, connect the Mac using HDMI or a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter, select that HDMI input on the TV, and start playback in VLC. Adapter compatibility depends on the Mac model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. For a PC or NAS library: use a media server
If files live on a computer or network-attached storage, a DLNA/UPnP media server can let the TV browse the library without keeping VLC open on the source device. This is a different workflow from mirroring VLC, and it requires the TV and server to support compatible network playback.
- Store the files on a PC or NAS and run a compatible DLNA/UPnP media server.
- Connect the server and TV to the same home network.
- Open the TV’s media or connected-device browser and select the server.
- Choose a file. If the TV cannot decode its video, audio, or subtitle format, use a server that can transcode it or choose another playback method.
VLC desktop can create network streams, but a Samsung TV will not necessarily understand every protocol, stream URL, container, codec, or subtitle format. A stream can be valid and still fail to appear or play correctly on the TV. Check the media specifications for the exact TV model rather than assuming support for every MP4 or MKV file: Samsung Smart TV specifications and feature support.

Troubleshoot by symptom
The TV does not appear
- Check that both devices are on the same local network, not one on guest Wi-Fi.
- Temporarily disconnect the VPN and check router settings for client or device isolation.
- Make sure the TV allows new device connections; accept any on-screen prompt.
- Restart VLC, the source device, the TV, and, if needed, the router.
- Install available TV software and VLC updates.
- On Android, try Smart View or the device’s screen-mirroring feature instead of VLC direct casting. On a PC, try HDMI.
- If direct VLC control is essential, use a compatible external Google Cast or other supported receiver.
Samsung also recommends checking the network, disconnecting from a VPN when troubleshooting network errors, allowing the TV connection, and checking for software updates. Samsung Smart View troubleshooting.
The video plays on the source device but not the TV
The TV or receiver may not support the file’s video codec, audio codec, or subtitle format. VLC decoding a file on the source device does not prove that a casting receiver can decode it. Direct casting, DRM protection, and an unstable network can also be factors.
- Try screen mirroring, which sends the source display rather than asking the TV to decode the original file directly.
- For direct casting, test VLC’s conversion-quality settings. If available, toggle hardware decoding as a diagnostic rather than assuming it is the fix. VLC documents Android playback and decoding options at VLC for Android and casting options at VLC casting settings.
- Try an H.264 video with AAC audio in an MP4 container, or use a media server capable of transcoding.
- For a PC or Mac, use HDMI to remove wireless casting as a variable.
There is picture but no sound
The receiver may not support the audio codec, multichannel audio, or passthrough configuration even when it can display the video. In VLC, try disabling audio passthrough so the source device decodes the audio; also test a stereo track or another audio track. If the file still has no sound, conversion to a compatible audio format or HDMI may help. VLC’s passthrough control is a compatibility setting to test, not a universal fix: VLC for Android casting settings.
Playback stutters or disconnects
- Move the source device and TV closer to the router, and use 5-GHz Wi-Fi where practical.
- Connect the PC or TV to the router by Ethernet if possible.
- Close bandwidth-heavy apps and check whether the router isolates wireless clients.
- For direct casting, try a lower conversion-quality setting. High-bitrate 4K or HDR files can be demanding.
- Use HDMI for a demanding file or when wireless playback remains unstable.
For locally stored media, internet speed may not be the limiting factor; the important link is often the local network between the source and TV. Samsung notes that unstable network conditions can cause network or video-output problems: Samsung Smart View troubleshooting.

The TV shows a black screen or protected-content warning
Some DRM-protected video deliberately blocks screen mirroring. Samsung lists DRM-protected content as unavailable through Smart View mirroring. Use the service’s official TV app or supported casting method rather than trying to bypass the restriction. Samsung Smart View troubleshooting.
VLC controls or notifications appear on the TV
That is expected when mirroring the whole screen. Put VLC in full-screen mode, enable Do Not Disturb, and turn off notification previews. If you want the phone to act only as a controller, use direct casting with a compatible receiver.
Quick Recap
Which method should you use?
- Fastest no-cost option: Smart View for a Galaxy device, AirPlay for a compatible Apple device, or Windows wireless display for a compatible PC.
- Most predictable for a laptop or desktop: HDMI, especially for high-bitrate files or when wireless discovery fails.
- Best for VLC playback control: Direct casting, but only when VLC detects a compatible Chromecast, Google Cast, or UPnP receiver.
- Best for a recurring media library: A DLNA/UPnP server with transcoding if the TV cannot decode some files.
- Best when the TV lacks the needed receiver: Add a compatible external receiver or connect a computer by HDMI before considering a TV replacement.
