Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer: list each video in a plain-text playlist in the order you want it played, then send FFmpeg’s output to the ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Stream copy can avoid re-encoding when the files have compatible streams; otherwise, convert them to one consistent output profile.
1. Create a playlist in playback order
Put a text file such as playlist.txt in a predictable folder with the videos. Add one file directive per video, in the exact order you want them to play:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'video-01.mp4'
file 'video-02.mp4'
file 'video-03.mp4'
The optional ffconcat version 1.0 marker must be the first line exactly as shown for automatic script recognition. Paths may be relative to the working directory or absolute. Quote paths containing spaces or special characters appropriately; FFmpeg documents escaping such characters with backslashes or single quotes. Confirm that every referenced file exists and that FFmpeg can open it. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
The concat demuxer reads the files sequentially and adjusts timestamps so each follows the previous one. It expects the files to have the same streams, including compatible codecs and time bases. File durations affect the timestamps of later files, so inaccurate duration metadata can cause artifacts; the playlist’s duration directive can override a file’s detected duration when necessary.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Choose stream copy or transcoding
| Approach | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
Stream copy (-c copy) |
The input files meet the concat demuxer’s stream-compatibility requirements and the output muxer accepts their streams. | Avoids decoding and re-encoding, but does not make incompatible inputs compatible. |
| Transcoding | Inputs differ, or you need a consistent output profile, resizing, frame-rate conversion, or filters. | Produces a common output format but uses processing resources and re-encodes the media. |
FFmpeg’s command-line documentation describes stream handling and output options; consult it alongside the concat documentation before adapting a command to different media.
For compatible files: stream copy

ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -c copy -f flv "<YouTube RTMP(S) ingest URL and stream key>"
-re reads at the media’s native rate for real-time output; -c copy passes streams through without re-encoding. Replace the placeholder with the exact ingest destination YouTube provides, using the URL format displayed in Live Control Room. Whether this works depends on the inputs, FFmpeg build, output muxer, and destination protocol.
When the files differ: transcode to one profile

The 8 Mbps video target is YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 720p30, not a recommendation for every resolution or frame rate. The 60-frame GOP corresponds to a two-second keyframe interval at 30 fps. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio; select a bitrate from its current table for the chosen codec, resolution and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended at 720p30, and 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended at 1080p30. These are profile-specific figures, not universal constants. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
The example sets a target and maximum video rate, but YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Confirm the actual encoder behavior for your FFmpeg build and chosen settings rather than assuming a command-line combination guarantees CBR.

3. Get the YouTube destination and prepare the stream
- In YouTube Studio, create or select a live stream and copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder configuration. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain this process; the exact URL and key are account- and stream-specific.
- Keep the key private. Do not publish it, include it in a public script or share a command containing it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Check the output resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, keyframe interval, bitrate and available upload bandwidth. Use YouTube’s current recommendation for the specific output profile.
- Review the rights and permissions for every video and audio track. A live stream is still subject to YouTube’s copyright and platform rules; using a playlist does not grant permission to rebroadcast material.
- If you use
-safe 0, keep the playlist under your control and do not allow untrusted entries. That option permits paths outside the concat demuxer’s safe subset. For simple trusted relative paths, try omitting it if FFmpeg accepts them.
First-time live-stream activation on an account may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help; allow for that before a scheduled broadcast.
4. Test, start and monitor
- Check the playlist order and file paths, then make a private or unlisted test where appropriate.
- Include both movement and audio in the test. YouTube specifically advises testing before going live; see its stream tips.
- Run the chosen FFmpeg command and check the preview and audio in Live Control Room before starting the public event.
- Monitor stream health and YouTube messages during transmission. Watch for dropped frames, audio problems and interruptions rather than relying only on FFmpeg’s process status.
5. Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or try |
|---|---|---|
| A file will not open | A playlist path is wrong, inaccessible, or parsed incorrectly because of spaces or special characters. | Check the working directory, verify each path and use correctly quoted or escaped paths. Test access to each file. |
| Concat errors or playback breaks at a file boundary | Inputs have different stream layouts, codecs or time bases, or duration metadata is inaccurate. | Inspect the input properties, correct duration information if needed, or transcode to a common output profile. |
| FFmpeg connects unsuccessfully | The stream URL or key may be incorrect, the wrong destination format may be in use, or live streaming may not yet be enabled. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, verify the output settings, and check account activation status. |
| YouTube reports unstable or poor stream health | Bitrate may not fit the chosen profile or available upload bandwidth; encoder settings may not match YouTube’s guidance. | Check YouTube’s current bitrate table for the output codec, resolution and frame rate, then verify keyframe interval and bandwidth. |
| Video appears but audio is missing or wrong | Inputs may have inconsistent audio streams or the output profile may not be suitable. | Test audio before going live; for mixed inputs, use a controlled transcode to a consistent audio format and verify it in Live Control Room. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube channel rather than a one-off FFmpeg session, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Frequently Asked Questions
Does the playlist repeat automatically?
The concat playlist shown here lists files to play in sequence; it does not by itself set up endless looping.
Can I use this method for a live camera feed?
No. This workflow sends prerecorded files from a playlist, not a camera input.
