You can send a Raspberry Pi 4 video source to YouTube Live over mobile broadband with FFmpeg, provided the Pi can encode the chosen format and your connection can sustain the outgoing bitrate. Start by measuring upload speed where the Pi will run, then set a bitrate with about 20% headroom. YouTube’s recommended 1080p30 bitrate is not a sensible target if your mobile uplink cannot hold it consistently.
What you need
- A Raspberry Pi 4 Model B and a suitable power supply: Raspberry Pi specifies 5V over USB-C with a 3A minimum. Its published ambient operating range is 0–50°C. See the Raspberry Pi 4 specifications.
- Raspberry Pi OS or another compatible Linux image, FFmpeg, and the tools or drivers for your chosen source. Raspberry Pi recommends Raspberry Pi OS for normal use; package names, camera support, and exposed encoder options can differ on other systems.
- A video input: a Pi camera, USB webcam or capture device, or a video file. Check the actual device path and available audio source on your installation.
- Mobile broadband with enough sustained upload capacity and data allowance for the session. Local signal, congestion, hotspot conditions, and plan terms matter; a carrier name alone does not predict performance at your site.
The Pi 4’s published H.264 hardware encoding capability is up to 1080p30. YouTube accepting higher resolutions does not mean this Pi can encode them in hardware. Raspberry Pi documents that, when available, rpicam-vid uses hardware H.264 encoding; that does not establish that every camera, FFmpeg build, or Linux image exposes the same path.
Choose resolution and bitrate for the real uplink
YouTube recommends H.264 over RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and AAC or MP3 audio. RTMPS encrypts the stream transport. The following H.264 figures are YouTube guidance on its live encoder settings page, accessed in 2026—not mandatory values or guarantees of local network performance.
| Output | YouTube minimum video bitrate | YouTube recommended video bitrate | Pi 4 consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| 480p30 | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps | Choose only a rate your uplink can sustain with headroom. |
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | A practical target only if measured upload supports the total stream bitrate. |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps | Within the Pi 4’s published H.264 hardware resolution/frame-rate capability, but only if the installed software and source support it and the uplink can sustain it. |
YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload headroom and cautions that download speed is often higher than upload speed. The total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth, and network interruptions can break the stream. Test sustained upload at the exact installation point, at times representative of the event, and repeat the test. Select a bitrate below the measured capacity with headroom; if the result varies, lower resolution or bitrate and test again. Do not infer an upload rate from an operator brand or a download-speed result. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

YouTube also recommends stereo AAC audio at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz among its advanced settings. Account for audio in the total outgoing bitrate; the video bitrate alone is not the complete stream rate. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Set up the YouTube event and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to configure a stream in Live Control Room. Labels may change, so use the current interface.
- Choose the event’s visibility and schedule or start it as appropriate. Review YouTube’s current live-stream requirements and copyright rules before broadcasting. A stream key does not grant rights to music, footage, or other material.
- In Live Control Room, obtain the current ingest server or endpoint and stream key. Use RTMPS when the current interface offers it and your FFmpeg build supports it.
- Keep the key private. Do not put it in a public script, screenshot, repository, or article; anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel. If exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update your local configuration.
Identify your input and available encoder
Before assembling a command, confirm the source, device path, audio mapping, FFmpeg version, and encoders actually available on the Pi. For a Pi camera, Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation describes using rpicam-vid with hardware H.264 when available and an FFmpeg/libav backend for audio/video encoding and network streaming. Its bitrate control is in bits per second and it provides an I-frame frequency option, but the documentation is not a complete YouTube command. Check the installed tools and their local help: options and encoder names depend on the OS image and build. See Raspberry Pi camera software documentation.

For a video file, verify its codecs, frame rate, dimensions, and audio tracks before streaming. For a webcam or capture card, identify the device through the relevant Linux tools and confirm that FFmpeg can read it. Do not assume that a camera node, encoder name, or input format from another Pi setup applies to yours.
Build and test an FFmpeg command
The following is a template, not a command guaranteed to run unchanged on every Pi 4. Replace the input, encoder, mappings, endpoint, and key with values verified on your installation and in the current YouTube Live Control Room. The example assumes an input already readable by FFmpeg; camera-specific input flags and hardware encoder names vary.

ffmpeg -re -i "INPUT"
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
-c:v h264_omx -b:v 4M -minrate 4M -maxrate 4M -bufsize 8M
-g 60 -keyint_min 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "rtmps://CURRENT-YOUTUBE-ENDPOINT/CURRENT-STREAM-KEY"
In this illustrative template, h264_omx is only a possible encoder name; it may not exist in your FFmpeg build. Choose a supported H.264 encoder after checking the installed build, and confirm whether it uses the Pi’s hardware encoder. The example’s 4 Mbps video rate is not a universal recommendation: choose a rate that fits your measured upload after headroom, and adjust resolution and frame rate to match the source and Pi capability. The -g 60 and -keyint_min 60 values correspond to a two-second GOP at 30 frames per second; if your frame rate differs, calculate the interval accordingly. Ensure the selected encoder honors the intended bitrate and keyframe settings.
The optional audio map (0:a:0?) lets the example continue if the input has no audio track; it does not create audio. If audio comes from a separate device, map that device explicitly and verify synchronization. If FFmpeg cannot read the source or rejects an option, consult the local FFmpeg build’s help and the source device’s documentation rather than copying a command for a different OS or camera.

- Start with a short private or unlisted test event and the lowest resolution/bitrate that gives a useful preview.
- Run FFmpeg and inspect its output for input, encoder, mapping, and connection errors. Keep the key out of shared logs and screenshots.
- Check the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Verify picture, motion, audio, and synchronization, then check stream health before opening the event to viewers.
- Test with realistic movement and audio for long enough to reveal upload variation. Increase settings only if the Pi and connection remain stable, and keep monitoring during the stream.
Estimate mobile data use
Approximate sent data from the configured total bitrate and planned duration, rather than using video playback estimates. For a quick conversion, bitrate in megabits per second Ă— seconds Ă· 8 gives approximate megabytes before overhead; include audio bitrate in the total. For example, a 4 Mbps video stream for one hour sends about 1,800 MB of video before audio and overhead (4 Ă— 3,600 Ă· 8). Actual plan accounting and protocol overhead can vary, so check the allowance and terms for your own SIM or hotspot plan.
Jio’s consumer help explains that higher-resolution YouTube playback uses more data and how viewers can change playback quality. Its approximate playback-use estimates are not measurements of a broadcaster’s outbound live-stream data rate and should not be used to plan encoder uploads. See Jio’s data-use guidance.

Before a long event, verify local coverage, the plan’s current data allowance, and any hotspot or tethering conditions with the operator. Recheck YouTube’s current live settings and your installed Raspberry Pi OS, FFmpeg, and camera tooling because recommendations and software support can change.
Troubleshoot common failures
- Unstable stream health or dropped frames: the mobile uplink may not sustain the configured total bitrate. Repeat an upload test at the event location and representative times, reduce bitrate or resolution, and test again. Better placement or a more stable connection may help, but cannot be assumed to fix local coverage.
- No incoming stream in Live Control Room: verify the current endpoint and key, that the event is ready to receive an encoder, and that the Pi has an active network route. If the key was exposed, replace it and update the command.
- Black preview or input errors: check the source path, capture-device permissions, input format, and whether another process is using the camera. Confirm FFmpeg can read the input before troubleshooting YouTube ingest.
- Encoder not found or command option rejected: inspect the installed FFmpeg build and its available encoders. A command written for another Raspberry Pi OS image or FFmpeg package may use unsupported options or a different hardware-encoding path.
- Picture but no sound: confirm that the input actually has audio or configure the separate audio device, then check the map and codec settings. A conditional audio map does not supply a missing microphone or source.
- Pi instability or power issues: check that the supply meets Raspberry Pi’s 5V/3A minimum, that cooling and enclosure conditions suit the workload, and that the environment is within the published 0–50°C ambient range.
- Data runs out sooner than expected: recalculate from the total configured bitrate and duration, including audio, then compare against the operator’s actual allowance rather than a playback-data estimate.
