In OBS, Facebook’s maintained service profile uses H.264 and lists starting points for common resolutions; if frames drop, lower the bitrate to match the stability of your upload connection.
What you need before you start
- A Facebook account with access to Live Producer and the broadcast destination you intend to use. The exact controls and available options may vary by account.
- An encoder that supports RTMPS, such as OBS Studio.
- A reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the bitrate you choose.
RTMPS sends the encoder’s live output to Facebook using a server URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to that destination. Do not publish it, include it in a recording, or share a screenshot that exposes it.
Get the RTMPS server URL and stream key
- Open Facebook Live Producer and create a live video or select the broadcast you want to use.
- Choose the streaming-software source, if prompted.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that broadcast. Use the current values on your Live Producer screen rather than assuming the same credentials or settings apply to every account or event.
Facebook’s help pages surfaced for this topic did not expose their detailed instructions for independent review, so the current Live Producer screen is the practical authority for the URL and credentials shown to your account. Do not assume that a key is permanent or reusable; use the options displayed for the specific broadcast.
Configure OBS for Facebook Live
Choose the Facebook Live destination
- Open OBS and go to Settings > Stream.
- If Facebook Live is available in the Service menu, select it and enter the stream key copied from Live Producer.
- If you need to configure a custom destination, choose a custom service and enter the server URL and stream key in their respective fields.
- For OBS’s maintained Facebook Live service configuration, the listed default server is
rtmps://rtmp-api.facebook.com:443/rtmp/. If Live Producer displays a different URL for your broadcast, use the URL currently displayed there.
OBS identifies Facebook Live as an H.264 video destination. Use the H.264 encoder option available in your OBS setup rather than selecting a different video codec.

Select resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
OBS’s maintained Facebook Live profile lists a maximum of 60 frames per second, a maximum video bitrate of 9000 kbps, and a maximum audio bitrate of 128 kbps. It also gives these example video settings:

These are OBS-maintained service recommendations, not a guarantee that Facebook will accept every setting for every account or broadcast. Start with a profile example your connection can sustain, then adjust only if the stream remains stable and the Live Producer preview looks right. A higher bitrate needs more consistent upload capacity; choosing the maximum simply because it is listed can cause dropped frames on a weaker or fluctuating connection.

OBS’s profile lists a maximum of 60 fps, but the examples above are both 30 fps. Choose frame rate and resolution for the content and available connection rather than increasing both automatically.
Start the stream and verify it in Live Producer
- Confirm the server URL and stream key are in the correct OBS fields.
- In OBS, start streaming.
- Return to Facebook Live Producer and wait for the incoming video preview or status to appear.
- Check that video and audio are present and that the preview is behaving as expected before using Facebook’s controls to publish the broadcast.
Starting the encoder sends the feed to Facebook; it does not by itself confirm that the broadcast has been published to viewers. Follow the status and publish controls shown in Live Producer.

Troubleshoot connection and dropped-frame problems
OBS shows rising dropped frames or a yellow/red connection indicator
OBS associates a rising dropped-frames counter and a yellow or red connection indicator with an unstable service connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain.
- Lower the video bitrate in OBS and test again.
- Check that the upload connection is consistent, not merely that a speed test briefly reports a high result.
- If the stream still drops frames, reduce resolution or frame rate as well, then check the preview again.
OBS cannot connect
- Re-copy the current stream key and server URL from the selected broadcast in Live Producer.
- Check that the URL is in the server field and the key is in the stream key field; avoid extra spaces when pasting.
- If you entered OBS’s default endpoint manually, compare it with the URL Live Producer currently displays and use Facebook’s displayed value if they differ.
The reviewed sources do not establish a complete current Facebook error-code guide, so an error message alone should not be interpreted as proof of a specific cause.

Live Producer does not show the expected preview or status
Confirm that OBS is actively streaming and that you selected the same broadcast whose credentials you entered. Recheck the key and URL, then check OBS’s connection status. If the values appear correct but no feed arrives, use the troubleshooting options available in Live Producer; account-specific interface and eligibility details are not established here.
