To stream a recorded Sunday sermon continuously on YouTube from a Windows 11 PC, load the video into OBS Studio as a looping Media Source, connect OBS to a YouTube Live stream with its stream key, and keep the PC awake while OBS sends the stream. Looping repeats the recording; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted internet connection or an always-available broadcast. Test the complete setup before service, monitor it while live, and plan separately for keeping an archive.
Before you set up the sermon stream
- Confirm live-stream eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Enable streaming ahead of time rather than assuming a new setup will be ready immediately. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Have the recording ready locally. Check that the sermon file plays correctly and that its audio is present. OBS Media Source supports common video formats, including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, as well as common audio formats. OBS lists supported media sources and formats.
- Check the PC and connection. OBS supports Windows 11, but meeting its system requirements alone does not guarantee that a PC can encode and stream successfully. The demands vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. See OBS’s system requirements.
Set up a recorded sermon as a looping OBS source
- Create a scene. In OBS Studio, add or select a scene for the sermon broadcast.
- Add the video. In the Sources panel, choose + > Media Source, create a source, and select the local sermon recording.
- Enable looping. In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop. This repeats the file when it reaches the end; it does not reconnect OBS or repair a dropped internet connection.
- Check the picture and sound. Confirm the video fits the scene and watch the OBS audio mixer while the file plays. Make sure the sermon’s audio track is present and that the meters respond.
If you need to rotate through multiple recordings, use OBS’s VLC Video source with a playlist and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed; OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See OBS Media Sources.
Create a YouTube Live stream and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a stream or schedule one, then find its server URL and stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a password: do not display it in the video, share it publicly, or expose it in screenshots. - Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS’s streaming settings, select YouTube if the service is available and enter the key. If connecting with a custom server, enter the server URL and key provided in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the connection workflow.
- Start sending, then check the preview. Start the encoder from OBS and wait for video and audio to appear in Live Control Room. Confirm the correct sermon is playing before starting the public broadcast. You can use a private or unlisted test where appropriate.
If you suspect the key has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace the old key in OBS before streaming again.
Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends H.264 video bitrates of 5 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection can deliver a stable stream. Test sustained upload capacity and leave headroom rather than setting OBS to consume all available upload bandwidth. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table.

For an audio-led sermon, a higher resolution may not add much value. Choose a resolution that matches the source recording and your viewers’ needs, then verify the result in a realistic test. YouTube advises testing with a setup that resembles the actual broadcast and monitoring stream quality while live.
Keep Windows 11 awake during the broadcast
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Set the plugged-in sleep timeout to cover the planned broadcast. The display can turn off while the PC remains awake; screen and sleep timeouts are separate choices.
- If using a laptop, review what closing the lid or pressing the power button does. Do not assume OBS prevents Windows from sleeping.
Microsoft documents these controls in Power settings in Windows 11; it does not specify a stream-specific timeout.

Test the full workflow and monitor the live stream
- Run a private or unlisted test, as appropriate, using the same PC, network, OBS scene, and recording you plan to use for the service.
- Verify the correct video, continuous looping, audible sermon audio, and YouTube preview. If possible, check the audience playback from another device or connection.
- Watch Live Control Room’s stream health and confirm OBS continues sending usable audio and video. YouTube recommends checking preview and monitoring stream quality.
- If recording locally as a backup, confirm that the recording is running and that its file is growing. Make sure there is enough storage for the full session; an external SSD for local stream recordings can serve as a separate destination if internal space is insufficient.
Plan the stream length, replay, and archive
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If retaining the sermon matters, make a local recording as a backup rather than relying only on YouTube’s archive. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
YouTube’s Enable DVR setting lets viewers pause and rewind during a live stream. For streams longer than 12 hours, DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable; turning DVR off removes the ability to seek back during the live broadcast. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

When the broadcast is finished, follow the stop flow shown in Live Control Room and stop sending from OBS as appropriate. For a stream that needs to continue beyond 12 hours, do not assume that either the full archive or rewind will be available afterward.

YouTube shows no signal
Check that OBS is actively streaming, the selected YouTube service or server URL is correct, and the current stream key matches the one in Live Control Room. Confirm the PC has an internet connection. If the key might have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.

The sermon video stops at the end
Open the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled. For a playlist, check that the source is VLC Video and Loop Playlist is enabled.
The stream has no sermon audio
Check that the selected file contains an audio track and watch the OBS mixer meters while it plays. Confirm that audio is present in YouTube’s preview during the test before going public.

The broadcast stops when the computer is left alone
Review the plugged-in sleep timeout and the laptop’s lid and power-button behavior in Windows power settings. Turning off the screen is not the same as putting the PC to sleep.
The stream looks unstable or drops frames
Check YouTube’s stream-health information, verify that the network is still connected, and lower the encoder bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. Retest at the intended resolution and frame rate; a bitrate recommendation cannot ensure stability on a specific upload connection.
The replay is missing or viewers cannot rewind far back
Check the stream duration and DVR setting. YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable beyond that threshold. Use a local recording when a copy must be retained.
