Yes. An AWS Lightsail VPS can run software that reads a prerecorded video and sends it to YouTube Live as a continuous encoder stream. The basic path is: create a YouTube live event and protect its stream key, prepare a Linux/Unix Lightsail instance, configure an encoder to send the source over RTMPS, then preview and monitor the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. This is a do-it-yourself outline, not a tested or AWS- or YouTube-certified recipe; instance sizing and exact playback commands depend on your file and workload.
How does streaming a prerecorded video on YouTube Live from a VPS work?
Uploading a video to YouTube and sending a video file to YouTube Live are different workflows. For a live broadcast, software on the VPS reads the file and continuously emits a live encoder output to YouTube’s ingest server. For ordinary encoder-based streaming, use RTMPS where supported. YouTube recommends it as a secure extension to RTMP.
The stream runs only while the VPS software is reading and sending the source. If you want continuous programming, you must arrange for playback to continue after the file ends; the official YouTube pages do not prescribe a player, loop flag, playlist scheduler, or Lightsail-specific command for that.

YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and states a minimum age of 16. Check the current requirements and your channel’s access before planning a broadcast: YouTube live-streaming eligibility.

Content rights and live policies
Only stream video and audio you have the rights to use. Prerecorded material does not become exempt from copyright or other YouTube policies because it is sent as a live stream. The official pages cited here do not establish a special disclosure rule for prerecorded broadcasts; check YouTube’s current policies and any applicable rights-holder terms before you schedule one.
Source file and intended output
- Confirm the VPS can access the complete source file and has enough disk space for it.
- Decide whether the software can pass through or remux a compatible source, or must transcode it in real time. Transcoding can require substantially more CPU; no official Lightsail benchmark establishes which plan handles a particular resolution.
- Plan for the source’s frame rate, aspect ratio, audio, and desired output resolution. Avoid choosing encoder settings without checking the source and YouTube’s current recommendations.
How to set up a Lightsail VPS for YouTube Live
- Check live access and create the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, create or schedule the live event, and select the encoder workflow and protocol offered for it. Copy the displayed ingest address and stream key securely. The exact interface labels can change; YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started guide covers setup.
- Choose a Linux/Unix Lightsail instance for the actual workload. Select a plan with adequate CPU, memory, disk, and sustained upload capacity. Reading or remuxing a compatible video differs from real-time transcoding. Lightsail’s plan pages list bundled compute, memory, storage, and transfer, but do not provide a sizing benchmark for this specific job: Lightsail pricing and bundles. Test the intended file and settings on the instance before relying on it for a scheduled broadcast.
- Install and configure your playback/encoder software. Use software that can read the file and send a live output to the YouTube ingest endpoint. FFmpeg is one possible tool, but the official sources cited here do not validate a particular command, operating-system setup, loop option, or scheduler. Build and test the command for your own file, codec, and desired behavior; do not treat an untested example as a production-ready recipe.
- Prefer RTMPS and use YouTube’s exact endpoint details. YouTube’s API documentation exposes RTMP and RTMPS ingestion addresses, including optional backup addresses. For RTMPS, the client must connect to the correct YouTube hostname and application path using TLS; the connection uses port 443 and the TLS server-name indication must match the hostname. Keep the stream key private. See YouTube RTMPS ingestion requirements and the LiveStreams resource.
- Set encoder output to match YouTube’s guidance and your source. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), a maximum frame rate of 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds). Use YouTube’s bitrate table for your chosen resolution and frame rate rather than assuming one bitrate suits every stream. YouTube transcodes incoming live video into viewer formats. Check the current YouTube encoder settings before configuring output.
- Keep the network rules narrow. Lightsail’s instance firewall governs inbound public-IP traffic; IPv4 and IPv6 rules are separate, and outbound traffic is allowed. For a VPS that only sends RTMPS to YouTube, the relevant connection is outbound to port 443. You do not need to open an inbound RTMP port for this architecture. Restrict SSH access to the source ranges that need administration, and review both IPv4 and IPv6 rules. See Lightsail firewall rules.
- Start with a preview and monitor the broadcast. Send a private or unlisted test if appropriate. Check the Live Control Room preview for picture and sound, review stream-health notices, and watch VPS CPU and network utilization. If you intend continuous programming, verify that playback continues when the source reaches its end. Which ports does YouTube RTMPS need?
For the RTMPS encoder connection, the VPS makes an outbound connection to YouTube on port 443. Google’s RTMPS documentation says the connection must be made to port 443 on the ingestion server. The RTMPS URL, application path, TLS connection, and server-name indication must also match the endpoint YouTube provides. Opening inbound port 1935 or another inbound RTMP port is not part of this VPS-to-YouTube sending setup.

Does the Lightsail VPS need a static IP?
Not for the ordinary outbound RTMPS connection to YouTube: that connection is configured with YouTube’s endpoint, not an incoming address on your VPS. Lightsail’s default public IPv4 can change when an instance is stopped and started. Attach a static IPv4 only if another service or workflow depends on a stable address reaching the instance. Check Lightsail static IP guidance if you need one.

Plan charge and included transfer
Lightsail bundles include compute, memory, storage, and a data-transfer allowance. Plans are billed by the hour up to the plan’s maximum monthly charge. The official pricing table has listed a Nano Linux plan with public IPv4 at $5/month, 2 vCPUs, 0.5 GB memory, 20 GB storage, and 1 TB transfer; treat these as a dated, potentially changing listing rather than a guaranteed current price or a recommendation for transcoding. Calculate transfer for your stream
As a rough planning method, multiply the stream’s total output bitrate by its runtime and number of broadcasts, then convert bits to bytes and compare the result with the current plan allowance. Include audio and any other instance traffic. Both inbound and outbound transfer count toward the allowance; qualifying excess outbound transfer to the internet/public IP can incur region-dependent charges. AWS’s FAQ lists $0.09/GB for US East (Ohio and N. Virginia) and US West (Oregon), but rates and applicability vary by region and can change. Troubleshooting a Lightsail-to-YouTube stream
- YouTube receives no signal: Confirm the event is ready for an encoder, the ingest address and stream key are copied correctly, and the encoder is running. For RTMPS, verify the endpoint hostname, application path, TLS/SNI, and outbound access to port 443.
- The stream connects but YouTube reports poor health: Check whether sustained VPS upload capacity can support the selected bitrate, and inspect CPU utilization for real-time transcoding pressure. Revisit the current YouTube bitrate guidance for the chosen resolution and frame rate.
- Video or audio does not appear as expected: Check the source file’s codecs, frame rate, aspect ratio, and audio track against the encoder output. Confirm the Live Control Room preview before making the event public.
- Playback stops at the end of the video: The encoder may have reached end-of-file. Configure and test a loop or playlist scheduler in the software you use; YouTube’s cited documentation does not specify that playback behavior.
- SSH access fails after a firewall change: Review the Lightsail inbound rule, the allowed source range, and whether you changed IPv4 or IPv6 rules. Avoid broad SSH exposure; ensure you retain a permitted administrative route before tightening rules.
- The server address changes after a restart: A default public IPv4 can change after stop/start. Use a Lightsail static IPv4 only if an external workflow needs stable inbound addressing.

What to consider when choosing between Lightsail and a managed cloud service
A VPS gives you control over the software and scheduling, but you are responsible for instance selection, configuration, monitoring, and transfer costs. A managed service can remove the need to keep your own computer or VPS encoder running, but you should check that its source, quality, and billing model fit your channel.
