This keeps the broadcast running only while the Mac, OBS, video file and internet connection remain available. If you need it to run without a computer at home, a cloud service is another option.
Before you set up the stream
Enable YouTube live streaming in advance
Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before you plan to broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. YouTube’s encoder-stream setup instructions explain the workflow.
Prepare the video and Mac
Keep the video file on the Mac that will run OBS. OBS lists common formats such as MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM, but playback can depend on the file’s codecs and the system. Play the file in OBS’s preview and confirm that both picture and audio work before starting a public broadcast. Allow enough free storage if you intend to record a local backup.
Loop one prerecorded video in OBS
- Install and open OBS Studio. Create a scene for the broadcast, or select an existing scene.
- Add the video: in the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source. Create a new source, browse to the local video file, and confirm.
- Enable looping: open the Media Source properties and select Loop. The source should restart from the beginning when playback reaches the end.
- Check the scene: use OBS’s preview to verify the video fits the canvas and that its audio is audible. If the video is shorter than the broadcast, looping will repeat it; it does not create new footage or change the content.

Loop a playlist instead of one file
For a sequence of recordings, install VLC and add OBS’s VLC Video source. Select the files for the playlist and enable Loop Playlist in that source’s properties. OBS requires VLC to be installed for this source. Test the transitions and audio between files in the preview before going live; a playlist is useful when you want more than one recording to repeat in order.
Connect OBS to YouTube
- Get the stream details: in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select an encoder stream and locate its stream URL and stream key.
- Enter them in OBS: open OBS Settings and select Stream. Choose YouTube as the service when available, then enter the stream key; if using a custom server configuration, enter the URL and key provided by YouTube. Labels can vary with OBS versions.
- Protect the key: treat the stream key like a password. Do not include it in screenshots, recordings or public instructions. If it is exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room and update OBS.
- Start the encoder: select Start Streaming in OBS. Wait for the incoming feed to appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, check the stream health, then use YouTube’s go-live control to begin the public broadcast.

Choose settings and test the upload path
Use settings that the Mac and internet connection can sustain continuously. YouTube recommends RTMPS for RTMP-based ingestion and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. Choose resolution, frame rate and bitrate from YouTube’s current recommendations for the intended output rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrates before configuring OBS, since recommended values depend on resolution and frame rate.
- Run a test with representative video movement and audio; a static or silent test may not reveal problems in the actual recording.
- Check OBS’s outgoing stream and YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators before going live.
- Use sustained upload capacity, not just a brief speed-test peak, as the practical constraint. Leave room for normal network variation.
- Keep an eye on the broadcast after launch. A local OBS stream depends on the Mac and network remaining operational.
Plan for long-stream archives and viewer rewind
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable when a stream runs beyond 12 hours. If you need a retained copy, use OBS’s local recording or another local archive workflow and confirm that the recording is being saved. YouTube recommends a local archive backup; an external SSD for video recording is optional, not a requirement to go live. See YouTube’s guidance on archiving live streams and DVR on live streams.

Keep the stream within YouTube’s rules
Looping a file does not exempt it from YouTube’s ordinary live-stream, copyright or monetization policies. Use recordings you own or are authorized to broadcast, including any music, footage and other embedded material. Repeating the same video is a playback setup, not a guarantee of monetization or a way around reused-content review. Check YouTube’s current policies for your channel and content before starting a continuous broadcast.
Mac and OBS versus a cloud service
The key distinction is where the encoder runs. YouTube lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for continuous prerecorded streams without a dedicated PC; that listing does not establish its current prices, plan limits, partner terms or service reliability. YouTube’s encoder list is the source for that category. StreamNeo is another cloud option specifically for YouTube prerecorded-video streams.
