Facebook Live works from a personal profile, Page, Group or Event. Use the Facebook app for the fastest phone broadcast, a webcam for a simple desktop presentation, or OBS Studio/Streamlabs Desktop when you need screen sharing, gameplay, scenes, overlays or multiple cameras. Check destination eligibility and permissions first, then use Facebook Live Producer to preview and publish the stream.
Before you go live
You need an active Facebook account, an eligible destination, permission to post there, a camera and microphone (unless your production supplies them), and a stable upload connection. Your content must comply with Facebook policies.
Meta currently says an account must be at least 60 days old. Pages and professional-mode profiles generally need at least 100 followers. Page broadcasts also require Facebook access or suitable task access. These conditions, feature availability and interface labels can vary by destination, role, region and account status. See Meta’s Page eligibility guidance and Facebook Live overview.
- Profile: Reach friends, followers or a selected audience; privacy settings control visibility.
- Page: Best for a business, organization, creator or public brand; you must switch into the Page or have the required access.
- Group: The group’s privacy and posting permissions determine who can see and start the broadcast.
- Event: Useful for a scheduled program; verify the event destination and schedule before connecting an encoder.
Choose the right streaming method
| Method | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Facebook mobile app | Quick announcements, Q&As and portable broadcasts | Fastest setup, but limited production control and dependent on phone power and cellular/Wi-Fi quality |
| Facebook webcam | Talking-head updates, simple interviews and webinars | Easy desktop workflow with few scenes or overlays |
| OBS Studio | Gameplay, screen capture, multiple cameras and controlled audio | Free and open source, but requires manual configuration |
| Streamlabs Desktop | Creators wanting templates, alerts and guided setup | Free tier available; some advanced creator and multistream features are paid |
| Restream Studio | Browser-based production and multistreaming | Free streams carry branding; current documentation limits some Pages, Groups and custom RTMP destinations to paid plans |
How to stream from the Facebook mobile app
- Open the Facebook app and open the profile, Page, Group or Event where the video should appear.
- Start a new post and choose Live video or Live. Facebook’s wording can differ by device and destination.
- Allow camera and microphone access when prompted. Select the front or rear camera and the intended audience.
- Add the title, description and any available tags, location or fundraiser details.
- Check framing, lighting, microphone level and network stability, then tap Go Live.
- Monitor comments and reactions. Tap Finish or End Live Video when finished.
- Use a tripod, connect the phone to power and enable Do Not Disturb.
- Use headphones or an external microphone to improve speech and prevent echo.
- Avoid a bright window behind the presenter; lock focus and exposure if the phone supports it.
- Test in the actual location: congested public Wi-Fi and weak cellular service can interrupt a broadcast.
How to stream with a computer webcam
For a Page, Meta’s current desktop path is:
- Log in to Facebook, click your profile picture in the upper-right corner, choose See all profiles, and switch into the Page.
- Select Live video below the post composer.
- Choose Webcam as the video source.
- Enter the title and description, select the correct camera and microphone, and click Go Live.
Meta currently recommends Google Chrome for this Page workflow. If the camera or microphone is missing, allow Facebook permissions in the browser and operating system, close Zoom/Teams/Meet and other camera users, select the devices inside Facebook, disable interfering extensions, then refresh or reopen Live Producer. The Page instructions show the current permission and access requirements.

How to stream with OBS Studio
OBS is the strongest free, flexible option for gameplay, screen sharing and multi-source productions. Download the current release for your operating system from OBS Project; the page lists support for Windows, macOS and Linux and may change its version and OS requirements.
Prepare Facebook Live Producer
- Open facebook.com/live/create.
- Under Choose where to post, select the profile, Page, Group or other destination.
- Click Go live, then choose Streaming software.
- Optionally enable Persistent stream key under Advanced Settings.
- Copy the displayed Server URL and Stream Key. Keep both private; anyone with the key may be able to broadcast to that destination. Meta says only one live video at a time may use a persistent key.
Configure and start OBS
- Install and open OBS. Add the sources you need: Display Capture or Window Capture, Video Capture Device, Audio Input Capture, Audio Output Capture, images, text or media.
- Open Settings and select Stream.
- Choose Facebook as the service if available, or choose a custom RTMP service, then enter Facebook’s Server URL and Stream Key.
- Check the audio mixer meters and confirm the intended camera, microphone and desktop audio.
- Click Start Streaming.
- Return to Live Producer and wait for Facebook’s preview. Add the title and description, then select Go Live Now (or schedule it).
The encoder sending video does not always publish the post by itself: Facebook may require the separate preview and Go Live Now confirmation. If a key is exposed, stop the encoder and replace or regenerate it in Live Producer.
How to stream with Streamlabs Desktop
- Download the application from Streamlabs Desktop and sign in.
- Connect Facebook when prompted and select the intended profile or Page.
- Add scenes, cameras, screen sources, overlays, alerts and audio devices.
- Enter the title and description, confirm the destination, and choose Confirm & Go Live.
Streamlabs documents this connected-account workflow at its Facebook guide. Its OBS plugin guide is Windows-specific, so do not assume identical plugin support on every operating system. If a Group or Event is not offered in the connected list, use Facebook’s native destination workflow or manually configure RTMP when the tool supports it.
Groups, Pages, profiles and Events
Groups
Meta’s native Group path is Write something → Add to your post → Live video; select the source, add details and click Go live. The group must allow live video and your role must permit posting. Third-party tools may instead require a manually copied RTMP key or a paid integration. Treat those as tool-specific alternatives, not a universal Group requirement. See Meta’s Group instructions.

Pages and profiles
Confirm that you are posting as the correct Page or profile before starting the encoder. Audience settings, follower eligibility and account restrictions can change what appears in Live Producer.
Events
Choose the Event destination in Live Producer, or schedule a live video associated with it. A scheduled Event and a scheduled live post are not identical; verify the final destination and whether your encoder requires a manual publication click.
Scheduling a Facebook Live
- Open Live Producer and choose the destination.
- Select the scheduling option and enter the date, time, title, description, thumbnail and other available details.
- Save or schedule the live video and share its scheduled post or Event.
- Before the start time, verify the encoder, sources, audio and destination.
- Start the encoder early enough for Facebook to receive a preview, then confirm whether Live Producer requires a final Go Live click.
Automatic start behavior depends on the destination and integration, especially for Groups and Events.
Settings, duration and quality
Meta’s standard maximum is currently 8 hours per stream. Certain premium partners, gaming creators and media organizations may receive extensions, typically up to 12 hours, but those extensions are not automatic. Check Meta’s current video-format and duration guidelines before fixing an encoder preset.

- A commonly used implementation baseline is up to 1920×1080, up to 60 FPS, H.264/x264, constant bitrate, a two-second keyframe interval and roughly 3,000–6,000 Kbps, but these figures are guidance from Restream, not a guarantee for every account or destination.
- Watch OBS or Streamlabs CPU/GPU and dropped-frame indicators; lower resolution, frame rate or bitrate if the encoder is overloaded.

Troubleshoot Facebook Live
The Live option is missing
Check the 60-day account rule, the 100-follower requirement for Pages and professional-mode profiles, Page or Group permissions, destination settings, account/Page status and regional or app-version differences. Switch into the correct Page, try desktop Live Producer, update the app or try Chrome. Meta’s requirements are documented at facebook.com/help/1916203341847533.
There is no preview
Confirm that the encoder is running, the Server URL and key match the current Live Producer post, the destination is correct and the key has not expired or been replaced. Stop the encoder, copy a fresh URL and key, restart it, and wait for the preview before publishing. Check firewalls and VPNs if the connection is blocked.
The stream has no audio
Select the intended microphone in OBS or Streamlabs, unmute it in the mixer, verify operating-system privacy access, close applications with exclusive control, and use headphones to prevent monitoring feedback. Make sure desktop audio and microphone sources are not capturing the same signal twice.
Video is choppy or disconnects
Use Ethernet where possible, close unnecessary applications, reduce resolution, FPS or bitrate, simplify browser sources and animated overlays, and watch dropped-frame and CPU/GPU indicators. Keep a local recording when failure would be costly.

The wrong Page is receiving the stream
Stop before publishing if possible. Check the connected Facebook identity, selected Page and permissions granted to the tool; reconnect the account if the wrong Pages appear and remove unnecessary third-party access.
The recording later disappears
Ended broadcasts generally remain as posts where they were shared, but retention and deletion rules can change. Download or archive important videos independently rather than treating Facebook as permanent storage.
After the broadcast
End the stream cleanly in Facebook and the encoder, check that the recording and audio are present, download important material, and review comments and analytics. You can then cut clips or reuse the recording on other channels, subject to the rights and policies governing your content.
Quick Recap
Which tool should you use?
- Facebook directly: Choose it when speed and simplicity matter more than production control.
- OBS Studio: Choose it for free, cross-platform control of scenes, sources and audio.
- Streamlabs Desktop: Choose it for guided setup, templates, alerts and creator widgets, accepting that some features are paid.
- Restream: Choose it when multistreaming or browser guests justify another service; its free plan supports two channels with branding, while current documentation places some Facebook Pages, Groups and custom RTMP destinations behind paid plans. See Restream’s free-plan details.
- Hardware production: Choose a dedicated encoder or production system for professional events where reliability and physical controls justify added cost and complexity.
