How to Stream Netflix From an iPhone to a TV (With or Without a Cable)

Use the TV’s Netflix app when available. Otherwise choose the correct Lightning or USB-C HDMI adapter; wireless casting is limited and Netflix AirPlay is not supported.

The most reliable way to watch Netflix from an iPhone on a television is an HDMI connection: use Apple’s Lightning Digital AV Adapter for a Lightning iPhone, or a USB-C-to-HDMI video adapter for a compatible USB-C iPhone, then connect an HDMI cable to the TV. If the television, Apple TV, streaming box, or cable-provider box already has Netflix, open that app directly instead.

Netflix does not currently support AirPlay or AirPlay screen mirroring for watching Netflix. Wireless casting works only with supported targets, the same local network, and a qualifying Netflix plan.

Choose the right way to watch Netflix on your TV

What you have Best method What to know
Smart TV with Netflix Open Netflix with the TV remote The iPhone is not required.
Apple TV connected Open Netflix on Apple TV Use the iPhone for setup or remote functions, not AirPlay Netflix mirroring.
Netflix-compatible cast target Use Netflix’s Cast button Requires the same local network and a Standard or Premium plan.
No compatible app or unreliable Wi-Fi HDMI adapter and cable The most predictable option for ordinary HDMI TVs.
Cable-provider box with Netflix Launch Netflix on the box The box is normally not an HDMI passthrough for the iPhone.
Hotel, dorm, or guest Wi-Fi Wired HDMI, where supported Guest networks often block device discovery.

A normal charging cable does not automatically carry HDMI video. The iPhone, adapter, cable, television input, and copy-protection (HDCP) chain must all support playback.

Check your iPhone’s port and video support

Identify Lightning or USB-C

  • USB-C: iPhone 15 series and later, subject to model and regional variations.
  • Lightning: Earlier iPhone generations.

Look at the physical connector rather than relying only on the model name. Some iPhone models do not support wired video output. Check Apple’s technical specifications under Video Playback in its wired-display guide.

Connect a Lightning iPhone with HDMI

What you need

  • iPhone with a Lightning port
  • Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter
  • HDMI cable
  • Free HDMI input on the television
  • Optional charger for extended viewing

Netflix identifies Lightning adapter model numbers A1438 and A1621 as supported. To check a connected adapter, disconnect its cables, connect it to the iPhone, then open Settings → General → About → Apple HDMI Adapter and read the model number. If neither model appears, Netflix says the adapter is unsupported for Netflix. See Netflix’s device connection guidance.

Connection steps

  1. Plug the Lightning Digital AV Adapter into the iPhone.
  2. Connect the HDMI cable to the adapter.
  3. Connect the other end to the TV’s HDMI input.
  4. Use the TV remote to select that exact HDMI input.
  5. Open Netflix, choose a profile, and play a title.
  6. Connect a charger to the adapter or iPhone if the battery is low.

Apple describes the same adapter-then-HDMI arrangement in its iPhone display instructions.

Connect a USB-C iPhone with HDMI

What you need

  • USB-C iPhone that supports wired video output
  • USB-C-to-HDMI video adapter, preferably Apple’s USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter
  • HDMI cable
  • Optional USB-C charger

Apple’s USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter provides HDMI, USB, and USB-C charging passthrough. Its U.S. Apple Store price was $69 when checked; prices can change. A third-party adapter may work, but Netflix says the adapter or USB-C/Thunderbolt cable must support high-resolution video playback. For troubleshooting, Netflix specifies checking HDCP 2.2 support.

Connection steps

  1. Connect the USB-C video adapter to the iPhone.
  2. Plug the HDMI cable into the adapter and TV.
  3. Select the matching HDMI input on the TV.
  4. Open Netflix and start playback.
  5. Use the adapter’s USB-C charging port if the phone needs power.

Do not assume every USB-C charging cable carries video. Resolution also depends on the iPhone, adapter, HDMI cable, television, HDCP chain, title, and Netflix plan.

Cast Netflix wirelessly from the iPhone

When Netflix casting is supported, the iPhone acts as a remote while the target device retrieves the stream.

  1. Connect the iPhone and target device to the same local Wi-Fi network.
  2. Open Netflix and select a profile.
  3. Tap the Cast icon in the upper-right corner.
  4. Select the television or streaming device.
  5. Choose a show or movie. Use the iPhone for pause, seeking, subtitles, and audio controls.

Netflix’s current list includes Chromecast third generation or older without a physical remote, Google Nest Hub smart displays, and select cast-enabled Vizio and Compal televisions. If your device is not listed, Netflix recommends opening Netflix with that device’s own remote instead. Casting or mirroring requires a Standard or Premium plan under Netflix’s current help documentation: Netflix connection help and casting troubleshooting.

Netflix’s iPhone/iPad casting troubleshooting page requires iOS or iPadOS 16 or later. Google’s setup documentation requires iOS 17 or later for the Google Home app and lists HDCP 1.3 or higher for compatible displays, with HDCP 2.2 required for 4K on applicable Google devices: Google Chromecast requirements. Those Google requirements do not prove that every Google streaming product supports Netflix casting from an iPhone; newer Google TV devices are generally safer to use as standalone Netflix players.

Why AirPlay is not the Netflix solution

Older instructions often tell you to tap AirPlay in Netflix. Netflix now states that AirPlay from iPhone or iPad is unsupported and that AirPlay and screen mirroring are no longer available for Netflix. Use a supported Cast target, an HDMI adapter, or the TV or streaming device’s Netflix app instead. AirPlay may still work for other apps and iPhone content.

Apple Lightning to Digital AV Adapter
  • Use the Lightning Digital AV Adapter with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod with Lightning connector.
  • The Lightning Digital AV Adapter supports mirroring of what is displayed on your device screen — including apps, presentations, websites, slideshows, and more — to your HDMI-equipped TV, display, projector, or other compatible display in up to 1080p HD.
  • It also outputs video content — movies, TV shows, captured video — to your big screen in up to 1080p HD.
  • Simply attach the Lightning Digital AV Adapter to the Lightning connector on your device and then to your TV or projector via an HDMI cable (sold separately).
  • Requires an HDMI cable (sold separately) for connection to your TV or projector. Supports both video and audio output.

Use the TV, Apple TV, or cable box directly

Smart TV

  1. Press Home or Apps on the TV remote.
  2. Open Netflix.
  3. Sign in and select a profile.

Apple TV

Apple TV runs Netflix directly, so buying one solely to mirror an iPhone is unnecessary. Apple lists Netflix as a supported app and says Apple TV requires power, broadband, and an HDMI cable sold separately: Apple TV 4K and Apple’s setup guide.

Cable-provider box

If the box has a Netflix app, open it from the box’s home screen and use its remote. The iPhone normally does not stream “through” the box as an HDMI passthrough.

Troubleshoot the common failures

No Cast icon

  • Open Settings → Netflix → Local Network and enable permission.
  • Put the iPhone and target on the same Wi-Fi network.
  • Confirm the target is on Netflix’s supported list.
  • Update Netflix and Google Home where applicable.
  • Confirm iOS/iPadOS 16 or later, then restart both devices.

No picture or “No signal”

  1. Confirm the TV is on the HDMI input you used.
  2. Reconnect both HDMI ends and try reversing the cable.
  3. Try another HDMI input and cable.
  4. Connect the adapter directly to the TV, bypassing receivers, soundbars, splitters, or switches.
  5. Restart the iPhone and TV.
  6. Verify the Apple-supported adapter model; for USB-C, verify HDCP 2.2.
  7. Test another TV if available.

Netflix recommends these direct-connection and replacement tests in its video-cable troubleshooting guidance.

Black screen with sound

This usually indicates an unsupported adapter, HDCP handshake failure, defective cable or port, or an interfering receiver, splitter, or capture device. Direct-connect to the TV, replace the cable, try another port, restart both devices, and verify adapter and HDCP support.

Video works but audio does not

  • Check TV mute and selected audio output.
  • Temporarily bypass a receiver or soundbar.
  • Try another HDMI port or cable.
  • Restart the TV and adapter.
  • Confirm the receiver supports the signal.

Downloaded video has black bars or autoplay stops

Netflix warns that downloaded titles may display black bars when shown from an iPhone or iPad. Autoplaying the next episode is not supported through a video cable or adapter. These can be expected limitations rather than hardware faults.

Hotel or guest Wi-Fi cannot find the TV

Guest networks may isolate devices, use separate segments, or require a captive-portal sign-in. A wired adapter is usually more predictable, provided the TV has HDMI and the iPhone and adapter support protected video.

Can an old television work?

An HDMI-equipped older TV can usually be used with the correct adapter and cable. A VGA connection may be possible for some iPhone setups, but audio and Netflix protected-video compatibility are less predictable; HDMI is preferable. A TV with no compatible video input may need a dedicated streaming device or replacement display.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a regular USB-C cable for Netflix on the TV?

Not necessarily. The USB-C cable or adapter must support video output and high-resolution playback; a charging-only cable will not work.

Apple Lightning to Digital AV Adapter
  • Use the Lightning Digital AV Adapter with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod with Lightning connector.

Do I need Wi-Fi when using an HDMI adapter?

The HDMI link itself does not require Wi-Fi, but the iPhone still needs internet access to stream Netflix unless you are playing downloaded content.

Can I use a cheap third-party adapter?

Some work, but Netflix-protected playback can fail. Apple’s supported adapter or a model that explicitly supports video and HDCP is the lower-risk choice.

Can I charge the iPhone while watching?

Yes, when the adapter provides a charging port. Apple’s USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter includes charging passthrough; use a compatible charger.
