You can stream a sequence of video files from a Linode Linux server to YouTube Live with FFmpeg’s concat demuxer. The method uses a text manifest of local files—it does not turn a YouTube playlist URL into downloadable video. You need authorized media on the server, compatible inputs, FFmpeg, and a current YouTube Live ingest URL and stream key.
What this method does—and what it does not do
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text file listing media files and processes them in sequence. The FFmpeg documentation describes it as reading “a list of files and other directives from a text file” and demuxing them one after another: FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
This is a file-based workflow. A YouTube playlist URL is not a concat manifest, and this method does not resolve, download, or extract YouTube videos. Use recordings you control and have permission to rebroadcast. Copyright permission and YouTube’s live-stream policies still apply.
What you need before starting
- A Linux Linode instance with the media files stored locally or on storage the instance can reliably read.
- An FFmpeg build that includes the required input, encoder and output protocols. Check the installed build with
ffmpeg -versionandffmpeg -protocols. - Files with matching stream layouts, codecs and time bases if you plan to join them using the concat demuxer without normalizing them first.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and access to the stream URL and key in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Enough sustained CPU, memory, disk throughput and outbound network capacity for the chosen workflow.
Prepare and check the video files
Put the inputs in a stable directory
Keep the files in a directory that will remain available while FFmpeg runs, such as /srv/media. Use predictable filenames and confirm the Linux account running FFmpeg can read each file.

Create the concat manifest
Create a UTF-8 text file such as /srv/media/playlist.ffconcat with the documented header and one file directive per input, in playback order:
ffconcat version 1.0
file '/srv/media/part-01.mp4'
file '/srv/media/part-02.mp4'Use valid FFmpeg concat-script quoting and escaping for filenames containing spaces, apostrophes or other special characters. Prefer simple filenames if you can. The header must be the first line for FFmpeg to recognize the script format automatically.

Check stream compatibility
The concat demuxer does not make unlike files match. Inputs should have the same streams, codecs and time bases; mismatches can cause errors, missing audio or video, timestamp discontinuities, or playback artifacts. Inspect each file’s streams and duration before the broadcast. If stream layouts or encoding parameters differ, use a filter-based concat workflow that decodes and re-encodes to a consistent output rather than assuming the demuxer will normalize them.
Durations matter because FFmpeg uses each file’s duration to place the next file. Incorrect or unusual duration metadata can produce timestamp artifacts or gaps. If you see jumps or synchronization problems, verify reported durations and timestamps as well as the manifest paths.

Get YouTube’s current ingest URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create or select the live stream or event you intend to use.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Prefer the RTMPS endpoint when your FFmpeg build supports it; RTMPS is RTMP protected by TLS. YouTube’s instructions are at Set up your encoder for live streaming and Use an RTMPS encoder.
Treat the stream key as a password. Do not publish it, commit it to source control, expose it in screenshots, or leave it in shared logs or shell history. Use a protected configuration approach with permissions limited to the account that runs the stream. Never use a real key in a tutorial command.
Choose encoding settings and start FFmpeg
Set a profile that fits YouTube and the Linode instance
YouTube’s encoder guidance covers supported codecs, bitrate ranges by resolution, constant bitrate and a recommended two-second keyframe interval: YouTube live encoder settings. Select a resolution, frame rate, video and audio bitrate, and keyframe interval that match those current recommendations and your server’s capacity. There is no single correct Linode size or bitrate for every source and output.

The following is an illustrative transcode command, not a universal preset. Replace the ingest placeholder with the current YouTube RTMPS URL and key using your protected credential method. Confirm option support and ordering against the FFmpeg version installed on your instance:

-g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv 'rtmps://CURRENT_YOUTUBE_INGEST/STREAM_KEY'In this example, FFmpeg transcodes to H.264 video and AAC audio; the bitrate and GOP values are examples only. The frame count represented by -g 60 depends on the output frame rate, so it is not automatically a two-second keyframe interval for every stream. Match the GOP to the selected frame rate and YouTube’s current recommendation. The -re input option reads media at its native playback rate rather than sending the files as fast as the server can process them.

Consider stream copy only when inputs already match
Stream copy avoids video and audio re-encoding and therefore reduces CPU demand, but it is appropriate only when the inputs and resulting stream are compatible with YouTube’s ingest requirements and with each other. If you need to use -c copy, verify the codec, stream layout, timestamps and container behavior before relying on it. Re-encoding provides more control over output consistency but consumes CPU and may require a larger instance.
Size and test the Linode workload
Instance requirements depend on whether FFmpeg is copying or re-encoding, the resolution and frame rate, codec and preset, and whether other jobs run at the same time. Monitor CPU use and verify that your FFmpeg build has the encoder and protocol you need. The reviewed provider guidance does not establish a universally suitable Linode size, so test the exact workload rather than choosing by a blanket recommendation.
Plan for sustained outbound bandwidth. YouTube recommends keeping upload capacity above the total stream bitrate, with 20% headroom recommended, and advises testing and monitoring stream health: YouTube streaming tips. If sending multiple streams, include all their bitrates in the total. Confirm that the instance can reach the ingest endpoint and port YouTube currently shows; do not assume one port applies to every endpoint or setup.
Go live, preview and monitor
- Start FFmpeg and watch its output for input, encoding and connection errors.
- In Live Control Room, wait for YouTube to receive the encoder feed and check the preview and stream health before relying on the broadcast.
- Monitor the Linode’s CPU and network use, along with YouTube’s stream health, throughout the session.
- After the event, check the resulting YouTube archive if you need to confirm the complete broadcast was captured.
First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available. If the Live Control Room does not allow you to start, check current channel eligibility and live-stream access in YouTube Studio: YouTube live streaming requirements.
