You do not automatically need to convert H.265 (HEVC) videos to H.264 before streaming them to YouTube Live. YouTube lists HEVC as supported for RTMP/RTMPS and HLS ingest. First check the files and choose an ingest protocol; then pass through or transcode the video to match YouTube’s settings for that protocol, resolution and frame rate. Test the complete playlist in YouTube Studio before relying on it.
What “playlist” means in this setup
An FFmpeg input playlist is a list of local files to play in sequence. It is not the same thing as a YouTube HLS media playlist. Sending a sequence of files through FFmpeg does not make the output HLS: the output protocol and muxing determine how YouTube receives the stream. For ordinary live ingest, RTMPS may be simpler if your files and output path are compatible; choose HLS when its protocol requirements suit your workflow.
Check the files before deciding to convert
Inspect every input for its video codec, pixel format, dimensions, frame rate, audio tracks and container. FFmpeg’s input inspection tools can reveal whether a supposedly uniform playlist contains files with different properties. Codec support alone does not establish that every container, pixel format or stream combination will pass through correctly.
If the files are compatible with the chosen output path, try passing through the HEVC video rather than spending VPS CPU time re-encoding it. If compatibility or inconsistent input properties require normalization, transcode to a supported target codec and encode audio to the requirements of the chosen ingest path. Re-encoding consumes processing capacity and can reduce image quality. FFmpeg documents conversion and codec/muxer options at FFmpeg documentation.

Choose RTMPS or HLS
| Choice | Video and audio | Requirements to account for |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP/RTMPS | YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio. For 5.1 audio, AAC is required. | YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure transport, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds). Use the bitrate for the actual codec, resolution and frame rate. |
| HLS | YouTube lists H.264 and H.265/HEVC video, with AAC, AC3 or EAC3 audio. | Use TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, a rolling media playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges. |
YouTube Help says, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Its current guidance is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and Set up HLS live streaming. Check these operational pages before configuring a production stream because platform requirements can change.
Set bitrate, keyframes and audio for the output
Video bitrate and frame rate
Match YouTube’s bitrate table to the codec, resolution and frame rate you actually send. For H.265/HEVC or AV1, YouTube’s published recommendations list 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60; both have a listed minimum of 4 Mbps. The recommendation for 720p30 and 720p60 is 6 Mbps. These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS or network can sustain the stream. The guidance allows up to 60 fps; select the applicable row rather than assuming one bitrate fits all outputs.

Rate control and keyframes
For RTMP/RTMPS, use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe frequency; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. Make the output’s frame rate and keyframe interval consistent with the selected settings. YouTube’s HLS requirements are a separate protocol specification, so do not treat RTMP/RTMPS settings as a substitute for HLS segment and playlist requirements.
Audio
- For stereo, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps.
- For 5.1, it lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps; RTMP/RTMPS requires AAC for 5.1.
- HLS accepts AAC, AC3 or EAC3. Check channel layout and continuity across clips, particularly when the playlist mixes files with different audio tracks.
Build the FFmpeg playlist workflow
- Inspect all source files. Record each file’s codec, pixel format, resolution, frame rate, container and audio layout. Decide whether video can be passed through or needs transcoding, and whether audio needs a consistent codec or layout.
- Prepare the input playlist. Use an FFmpeg-supported input-list method appropriate to your files and intended sequence. Ensure paths resolve from the VPS process’s working directory and that the sequence behaves as intended at clip boundaries.
- Choose the output protocol and muxing. For RTMPS, configure the output for the YouTube stream endpoint and the selected video/audio encoders or pass-through streams. For HLS, configure an HLS output that meets YouTube’s TS segment, rolling playlist, HTTPS method and byte-range requirements. An input file list is not an HLS output playlist.
- Set output parameters. Apply the matching resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR and keyframe interval for RTMP/RTMPS, as well as the required audio encoding. For HLS, meet its protocol-specific segment and playlist constraints in addition to the appropriate codec and audio requirements.
- Protect the stream key. Keep it out of public scripts, repositories and logs. Supply it through a protected environment or configuration mechanism on the VPS, and rotate it if it is exposed. YouTube specifies how to configure ingest, but does not prescribe a particular VPS secret-management method.
- Test in YouTube Studio. Before depending on the stream, verify that YouTube receives it and reports healthy stream status. Use movement and audio similar to the real program. Confirm that the playlist advances, audio remains present between clips, the outgoing bitrate stays near the configured target, and you understand what happens if the connection drops.
Keep a VPS stream running and recover from failures
A command that starts successfully is not, by itself, a resilient 24/7 service. Use process supervision and monitoring appropriate to your VPS so you can detect a stopped FFmpeg process, failed network connection, full storage or exhausted resources. Leave enough sustained upload capacity for the encoded stream and network variation; YouTube advises choosing quality based on the connection and running a speed test. The available YouTube guidance does not establish a particular VPS size or provider as sufficient.

FFmpeg documents FIFO muxer options including attempt_recovery and a recovery wait time, with an example using real-time file input, in its formats and muxers documentation. Treat these as options to evaluate, not a promise that every network failure will recover transparently. Test reconnection behavior and make sure your supervisor can restart a failed process without exposing the stream key.
Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube does not accept the stream: Verify the selected ingest endpoint and protocol, stream key, output container/muxing and codec combination. HEVC support does not mean every source container or stream layout is automatically compatible.
- Stream health reports bitrate or connection problems: Check the bitrate row for the actual codec, resolution and frame rate; confirm CBR for RTMP/RTMPS; and verify the VPS connection can sustain the output with headroom for variation.
- Video stutters or keyframes are flagged: Confirm the output frame rate and two-second keyframe interval for RTMP/RTMPS, with no interval above YouTube’s four-second maximum. Check whether the VPS has enough resources if you are transcoding.
- Audio disappears or changes between clips: Compare each file’s audio tracks and channel layout. Normalize or encode audio consistently where needed, using the codec and sample rate appropriate to the chosen protocol.
- HLS ingest fails despite a valid input list: Check that the output is actually HLS and follows YouTube’s TS segment duration, rolling playlist, HTTPS POST/PUT and no-byte-range requirements.
- The stream stops after a network interruption: Review FFmpeg and supervisor logs, test the recovery path, and confirm the process is restarted or recovered as intended. FIFO recovery options are not a substitute for operational monitoring.
