How to Stream from Wirecast to BoxCast

Send a Wirecast production to BoxCast using a direct RTMP or SRT connection, or route its secondary display output through a BoxCaster.

You can send a Wirecast production to BoxCast directly over RTMP or SRT, or route Wirecast’s secondary display output through a BoxCaster hardware encoder. For either direct software method, schedule a BoxCast broadcast first, then enter the connection details from the BoxCast Dashboard in Wirecast. The steps below follow BoxCast’s Wirecast-specific guide, published January 21, 2025.

Before you start

  • Schedule the BoxCast broadcast in the BoxCast Dashboard before sending a direct RTMP or SRT feed.
  • For RTMP, create or select an RTMP source and have its server URL and stream key ready.
  • For SRT, have the source’s address, port, stream ID, and passphrase ready. The passphrase is left blank when encryption is disabled.
  • Keep the stream key private. Do not expose it in screenshots, public documents, or examples.

BoxCast’s Wirecast guide recommends starting Wirecast two to three minutes before the scheduled broadcast start, allowing time to check the incoming signal. Its separate general RTMP guide recommends a ten-to-fifteen-minute lead time. These are recommendations from different BoxCast articles, not a single guaranteed timing rule; for this Wirecast setup, use the Wirecast-specific guidance and leave enough time for your own signal check. BoxCast’s Wirecast + BoxCast guide · BoxCast’s general RTMP encoder guide

Method 1: Send Wirecast directly over RTMP

  1. Get the RTMP source details. In the BoxCast Dashboard, open Sources and create or select an RTMP source. Copy its Server URL and Stream Key. If you do not see an RTMP option, BoxCast’s instructions say to add an RTMP source first. See Add a New RTMP Source.
  2. Set Wirecast’s destination. In Wirecast, open Output > Output Settings and set Destination to RTMP Server.
  3. Enter the URL and key. Paste the BoxCast server URL into the address field and the stream key into the stream field. If your Wirecast interface provides a combined URL field instead, follow its field format while keeping the server URL and key values distinct. Save the destination if you plan to reuse it.
  4. Schedule, then start. Confirm that the BoxCast broadcast is scheduled, then press Stream in Wirecast. BoxCast says the broadcast goes live at its scheduled time even if the encoder begins sending earlier.

Check RTMPS compatibility

BoxCast-generated RTMP URLs default to RTMPS. BoxCast’s Wirecast guide says standard Wirecast versions do not support RTMPS and advises removing the “s” from the server URL when needed—for example, use rtmp://rtmp.boxcast.com/live rather than rtmps://rtmp.boxcast.com/live. Check whether your installed Wirecast version supports RTMPS before changing the URL; if it cannot connect to the default URL, use the RTMP form BoxCast specifies. Do not change the stream key. BoxCast’s Wirecast instructions

Method 2: Send Wirecast directly over SRT

  1. Open the SRT source configuration. In the BoxCast Dashboard, open Sources, select the SRT source, and open its Wirecast configuration values.
  2. Choose SRT in Wirecast. Open Output > Output Settings and set the destination to SRT: Secure Reliable Transport.
  3. Enter the connection values. Copy the Dashboard’s Address, Port, Passphrase, and Stream ID into the corresponding Wirecast fields. Leave the passphrase blank if encryption is disabled.
  4. Set audio before going live. Configure encoder audio for stereo, 48 kHz. BoxCast warns that other values may result in no audio or audio that sounds incorrect to viewers.
  5. Schedule and start early enough to check the feed. Schedule the BoxCast broadcast and start Wirecast before its scheduled start; BoxCast’s Wirecast-specific guide recommends two to three minutes early.

Use the SRT values supplied by the BoxCast Dashboard rather than substituting RTMP credentials. The required stereo 48 kHz audio setting is specific to BoxCast’s Wirecast SRT instructions. BoxCast’s Wirecast + BoxCast guide

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Method 3: Route Wirecast through a BoxCaster

This optional hardware route sends Wirecast’s program output from a secondary display output to a BoxCaster. BoxCast says hardware encoding relieves the computer from encoding video and audio; its guide also notes that the hardware workflow provides BoxCast support with additional broadcast data and logs. It is not required for direct RTMP or SRT streaming.

  1. Check your equipment first. Confirm that your computer has a compatible secondary video output and that the output, cable, and BoxCaster connection are compatible. The BoxCast guide describes a secondary HDMI display-output path; confirm your actual ports before choosing or buying a cable.
  2. Configure the Wirecast output display. Open Output > Multi-Viewer Output > Configure Displays.
  3. Apply the guide’s display settings. Set the output monitor to 1920×1280, choose Full Screen, set labels to Do Not Draw Labels, and select Live.
  4. Choose the correct display output. Select the secondary display output connected to the BoxCaster, then verify the feed at the encoder and in the scheduled BoxCast broadcast.

An HDMI cable may be needed for this hardware route, depending on the computer and encoder connections; it is not needed for the direct RTMP or SRT workflows. BoxCast’s Wirecast + BoxCast guide

Which connection should you use?

Path What you need to enter or connect Choose it when
RTMP BoxCast server URL and stream key; Wirecast destination set to RTMP Server. Your BoxCast Dashboard provides an RTMP source and you want a direct software connection.
SRT Address, port, stream ID, and passphrase if encryption is enabled; stereo audio at 48 kHz. Your BoxCast Dashboard provides an SRT source and you can configure the specified audio format.
BoxCaster Wirecast secondary display output configured for the BoxCaster connection. You already have a compatible BoxCaster and display-output path, or want the hardware encoder workflow and its additional broadcast data and logs.

BoxCast describes operational advantages of its hardware encoder, but the cited setup pages do not provide a controlled benchmark establishing that one path performs best for every broadcaster. For direct RTMP ingestion, BoxCast’s general encoder guidance supports H.264 and says H.265/HEVC is not currently supported. BoxCast’s RTMP encoder guidance

Troubleshooting Wirecast-to-BoxCast connections

  • Wirecast will not connect to the RTMP server: Check that the BoxCast RTMP source exists and that you copied its server URL and stream key correctly. Because generated URLs default to RTMPS, check the installed Wirecast version’s RTMPS support; if it cannot use the default URL, BoxCast advises removing the “s” and using the RTMP URL form.
  • The broadcast is not live yet: Confirm that the BoxCast broadcast is scheduled and check its scheduled start time. Wirecast can send before that time; BoxCast says the broadcast goes live at the scheduled time.
  • SRT has no audio or audio sounds wrong: Set Wirecast encoder audio to stereo at 48 kHz, as required by BoxCast’s Wirecast SRT instructions.
  • SRT does not connect: Recheck the address, port, stream ID, and passphrase against the SRT source configuration in the BoxCast Dashboard. If encryption is disabled, leave the passphrase blank.
  • RTMP video is rejected or unavailable: Check the encoder codec. BoxCast’s general RTMP guidance supports H.264 and does not currently support H.265/HEVC for third-party RTMP ingestion.
  • The BoxCaster receives the wrong image or no image: Recheck that Wirecast is sending to the secondary output connected to the encoder and that the configured display uses the settings specified in BoxCast’s guide. Confirm the computer’s output and cable compatibility.
