Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYou can keep a church sermon stream running around the clock by sending a live camera or mixer feed—or a prerecorded sermon loop—from FFmpeg on a computer that stays powered and connected to YouTube Live. FFmpeg handles the media stream; it does not by itself guarantee a session will stay live indefinitely. You also need a suitable source, YouTube’s current ingest settings, monitoring, and a plan to restart after an interruption.
This guide assumes YouTube Live is the destination. The right FFmpeg setup depends on whether your source is a live feed or a recorded video and on the ingest protocol YouTube provides for your stream.
How the 24/7 setup fits together
The basic path is sermon source → FFmpeg on an always-available host → YouTube ingest → viewers. FFmpeg can read media, apply filters or transcode it, and write to supported output formats and protocols; its documentation also covers looping inputs and streaming options (FFmpeg Documentation; FFmpeg Formats Documentation, rolling documentation accessed 2026-10-03).
There are two different source models. A camera or mixer feed is live capture: FFmpeg must receive the device’s video and audio continuously. A prerecorded sermon is a file-based source: FFmpeg can loop it, but looping alone does not solve every timestamp, synchronization, or compatibility issue. Choose the path that matches the service you intend to provide.

Prepare the sermon source and host
For a live camera or mixer feed
Connect the camera and audio chain to a computer that can run FFmpeg continuously. Confirm that the computer can see the capture device and that the intended audio reaches the encoder; a camera picture with missing mixer audio is not a complete stream. Church streaming setup guidance identifies cameras, microphones, a streaming computer, and reliable internet as general setup considerations, but it does not prescribe exact hardware specifications or performance guarantees (StreamingChurch.tv church livestreaming documentation, surfaced as published 2024-10; accessed 2026-10-03).
Device names and capture options vary by operating system and hardware, so there is no single universally correct FFmpeg input command. Before going live, verify the selected input, audio routing, resolution, and audio/video synchronization with a short test.

For a prerecorded sermon loop
Keep the source file accessible to the FFmpeg process and confirm that its audio and video play correctly before using it for a long session. FFmpeg documents input looping, but exact behavior at end-of-file and the handling of timestamps and synchronization depend on the source and command. Test the actual file and output path rather than assuming that adding a loop option makes every recording suitable for continuous streaming.
Keep the host available
The machine running FFmpeg must remain powered, connected, and able to read the source for as long as you expect it to stream. A computer that sleeps, loses its network connection, or restarts will interrupt a self-managed stream. Arrange power and network access accordingly, and decide who will notice and respond if the process or platform session stops.

Create the YouTube Live stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use. Follow YouTube’s current encoder workflow for the stream’s settings.
- Copy the stream server URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses both values to connect an encoder and begin sending content (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder, accessed 2026-10-03).
- Provide those values to FFmpeg using the output protocol and address required by the stream. Do not publish the key in a script repository, public post, screenshot, or other place where someone else could use it to broadcast to your channel.
- Use Live Control Room’s preview and controls to confirm that YouTube receives the intended video and audio before treating the stream as live for viewers.
Keep the stream key private and use the current values displayed for the stream you are configuring. The exact FFmpeg command cannot be made universal: it changes with the input device or file, codecs and container, any required transcoding, and whether you use RTMP or HLS.
Choose an ingest protocol before building the output
Use the protocol and settings YouTube currently specifies for the stream. YouTube offers HLS ingestion as an option, but it has higher latency because video is delivered in segments. Its HLS setup guidance calls for TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and supported codecs (Set up an HLS stream, accessed 2026-10-03).

Google’s developer guide adds HLS constraints including muxed M2TS media, supported H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, and a closed GOP. Confirm the current requirements before configuring a real encoder (Delivering Live YouTube Content via HLS, accessed 2026-10-03). These HLS requirements should not be copied blindly into an RTMP setup: match FFmpeg’s output to the protocol selected in YouTube’s current instructions.
The available documentation does not establish one ready-to-copy FFmpeg command, universal bitrate, minimum CPU, or minimum upload speed for every sermon source and destination protocol. Those choices depend on the source, output format, and current YouTube ingest requirements. Where the input is not already compatible, decide whether transcoding is needed and test the resulting stream before relying on it.

Start, check, and operate the stream
- Start FFmpeg with the selected source and output configuration on the host that will stay available.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room for an incoming signal and inspect its preview. Verify picture, audio, and synchronization before the service depends on the stream.
- Monitor both the FFmpeg process and the YouTube session. A running encoder process does not, by itself, prove that YouTube is receiving a usable signal.
- Set a practical response plan: decide who checks the stream, how they will learn of a failure, and how they will restart FFmpeg or reconnect the encoder if needed.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archival rule for streams below that duration, not evidence that one live session can continue indefinitely. For a 24/7 operation, plan to monitor session status and handle an ended session or lost connection rather than assuming one process and one platform session will never stop (YouTube encoder guidance, accessed 2026-10-03).
Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube shows no incoming signal: Check that FFmpeg is running, that it is reading the intended input, and that the current stream server URL and key are supplied correctly. Recheck the protocol and output requirements in YouTube’s current stream setup.
- Video arrives without audio, or audio is wrong: Check the source’s audio routing and FFmpeg’s selected audio input or stream. For a live mixer feed, verify the connection from mixer to capture device as well as the capture device itself.
- A prerecorded sermon stops at the end: Confirm that the input is configured for looping and test end-of-file behavior with that specific media. Input looping is supported by FFmpeg, but the correct command depends on the recording and output path.
- The stream breaks after running for a while: Check the host’s power, sleep settings, network connection, FFmpeg process, and YouTube session status. Arrange a human or automated operational response; a 24/7 goal requires recovery planning, not just a start command.
- HLS output is rejected or delayed: Recheck YouTube’s current HLS requirements, including segment format, playlist behavior, transport, codecs, muxing, and GOP settings. HLS has higher latency because of its segmented delivery.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to loop uploaded sermon recordings rather than broadcast a live camera or mixer, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the uploaded video looping without a computer or home connection staying on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its pricing page for details. To start, try StreamNeo free for your first day.
