To stream an internet radio station live on YouTube, send the station’s program audio into an encoder, connect the encoder to a broadcast created in YouTube Live Control Room, check the preview, and start the stream. Before you do, confirm that your channel is eligible and that your music agreements cover YouTube and every territory where the stream may be available. In India, a terrestrial-radio permission should not be assumed to cover an online simulcast.
What you need before you start
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days. YouTube’s current start guide says the person livestreaming must be at least 16.
- An encoder-capable computer or other encoder, with the station’s program audio routed into it.
- A stable internet connection with enough outbound upload capacity for the whole stream.
- A visual output if your chosen encoder and broadcast setup require one. For an audio-led station, this could be a static image or a simple visual rather than live studio video.
- Confirmed rights for the sound recordings and underlying musical and literary works, including online use on YouTube and the relevant territories.
YouTube’s encoder workflow does not prescribe one universal way to get an internet-radio playout feed into an encoder. Check how your playout system exposes its output: it may already provide usable computer audio, or your production setup may need separate audio routing. Test the actual signal path before scheduling a public broadcast.
How to put the station on YouTube
- Check livestream access. Sign in to the channel and confirm that livestreaming is available. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance calls for channel verification and no livestreaming restriction in the past 90 days; the person livestreaming must be at least 16.
- Create the broadcast. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using the encoder method. Set the broadcast details and audience options appropriate to the program.
- Route the station output. Feed the program audio—not merely a monitoring preview—into the encoder. Add a visual source if you want one or your setup requires a video signal. Listen to the encoder’s output locally, if possible, to catch silence, clipping, or duplicate audio before you go live.
- Connect the encoder to YouTube. Copy the server information and stream key displayed in Live Control Room into the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send input to your broadcast. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.
- Set the stream parameters. For RTMP or RTMPS ingest, YouTube lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 as video codec options, and AAC or MP3 for audio. YouTube recommends CBR encoding, a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Its recommended stereo audio bitrate is 128 kbps. For an audio-first program, choose a modest video resolution and bitrate suited to the visual and your upload capacity; increasing video quality does not improve radio audio.
- Test with the real program. Start a private or unlisted test, where appropriate, using the same playout, encoder settings, and network you intend to use. Test representative audio and any moving visuals, then inspect Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health indications. YouTube recommends allowing 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the outgoing stream bitrate. Check upload capacity, not just download speed.
- Go live and verify playback. Once the preview and audio are right, start the broadcast from the encoder or Live Control Room as your setup requires. Open the channel’s watch page on a separate device or connection and confirm that viewers can hear the program and see the intended visual.
Choose an audio and visual setup that fits radio
Audio-led stream with a simple visual
This is usually the least complicated format when the station is relaying its existing program rather than filming a presenter. Use the cleanest program feed available, and avoid adding a microphone or other sources unless the show needs them. A static or simple visual keeps the video side modest; it does not change the need to secure rights to the music.
Live studio video
If the broadcast includes a presenter or studio, route the camera and any microphones or mixer outputs into the encoder as well as the station audio. More sources mean more routing and monitoring points to test. Keep the audio levels consistent and check that the program audio is not doubled by a second computer or microphone capture.

Software encoder, hardware encoder, and audio interfaces
A dedicated hardware encoder is not a universal requirement for a basic stream. Choose software or hardware according to the station’s existing playout setup, reliability needs, budget, and operator skill. A USB audio interface is only a conditional addition: it can help connect external microphones or studio equipment to a computer, but is unnecessary if the playout system already provides usable audio to the encoder.
Clear music and broadcast rights before going live
YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of live content and to satisfy applicable territorial licensing, registration, notification, and approval requirements. The terms also require compliance with applicable laws. That is a platform obligation, not a decision that any particular Indian license is sufficient.

Check both the works and the recordings
- Musical and literary works: IPRS describes licenses for public performance and communication to the public by broadcasting or streaming for repertoire it controls, and identifies internet interactive and non-interactive licensing categories. Its guidance does not establish that every right is covered by a particular station’s agreement. Confirm whether the station’s use, platform, and repertoire are covered.
- Sound recordings: PPL India describes a radio-broadcast license for its repertoire on terrestrial private and public FM and community radio. Its FAQ says it does not issue sound-recording licenses for digital-platform use and directs users to the individual labels for that use. Do not assume a terrestrial-radio permission covers YouTube; check the recording rightsholders and the wording of the station’s agreements.
- Broadcasts and performances: The Copyright Office’s published Copyright Act text addresses broadcast reproduction rights and performers’ rights, including rights related to broadcasting and communication to the public. If the station relays another broadcaster’s program or includes live performances, confirm permission for those elements too.
- Territories and archives: A YouTube stream may be accessible outside India. Establish which territories the station’s rights cover and whether territorial limits or geoblocking are needed. Also check whether permission covers only the live transmission or any archived replay on the channel.
Review the actual catalogue, ownership, contracts, intended live and archived uses, and territories. If any scope is uncertain, seek written clearance from the relevant rightsholders and India-qualified copyright advice before launch. General licensing-category descriptions cannot establish that a particular station is cleared. Rights clearance also does not itself guarantee that a channel or broadcast will qualify for YouTube monetization; check YouTube’s current monetization and reused-content requirements separately if revenue is part of the plan.
Troubleshoot common failures
| What you see or hear | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder will not connect | Incorrect server or stream-key details, or a key that has been replaced. | Copy the current ingest details from Live Control Room into the encoder, check for extra spaces, and confirm the key is still active. Replace an exposed key. |
| Broadcast connects, but viewers hear silence | The encoder is capturing the wrong input, the playout is muted, or audio is routed only to local monitoring. | Confirm the selected encoder input and listen to the signal reaching it. Check the playout output, operating-system input selection, and mixer routing. |
| Audio is distorted, too quiet, or doubled | Levels are clipping, sources are being captured twice, or an unintended microphone or monitor path is mixed in. | Reduce the source level if it clips, remove duplicate capture paths, and test the complete chain with representative program audio. |
| Stream health reports instability or playback buffers | Available upload capacity may be too low or variable for the outgoing stream. | Check outbound upload under the actual streaming conditions, retain YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and reduce video demands if needed. Test again before the public broadcast. |
| Video fails to process or stream health is poor | Encoder settings may not match YouTube’s recommended ingest parameters. | Check that the selected protocol and codecs are supported, use CBR, set a two-second keyframe interval, and do not exceed four seconds. Review the current YouTube encoder guidance in case platform settings have changed. |
| Music is claimed, blocked, or interrupted | A rightsholder claim or territorial restriction may apply even if the station has permission for another use or platform. | Check the affected recording and work, the territories and uses covered by the contract, and YouTube’s notice. Resolve the matter with the relevant rightsholder before resuming or disputing a claim; do not treat a terrestrial license as proof of digital clearance. |
YouTube’s encoder values and eligibility policies can change. Confirm the current guidance in Help and the settings shown in Live Control Room before a scheduled broadcast.
