How to Stream a YouTube Live Property Tour Loop from a Synology NAS

A Synology NAS can store your property-tour video, but a separate or compatible NAS-based encoder must loop it and send it to YouTube Live.

You can use a Synology NAS to store a property-tour video and have an encoder send it repeatedly to YouTube Live. The NAS is the file store; a separate computer or a compatible NAS-based encoder must do the actual playout and streaming. Synology’s documented Surveillance Station Live Broadcast feature sends a camera feed, not a prerecorded tour loop, and the available documentation does not establish a tested Synology model or application for looping a video file.

What you need to know before setting it up

  • A YouTube encoder connects using the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Keep the key private as you would a password. YouTube explains how to create and manage these details in its encoder stream settings.
  • The NAS can hold the tour file, but it does not automatically become a video playout system. You need an encoder that explicitly supports repeating a local or network-hosted prerecorded file and sending it to YouTube Live.
  • The exact Synology model and DSM version matter if you are considering running an encoder in a container. Synology Container Manager is only available on listed models; check the model compatibility information before planning around it.
  • Synology’s Surveillance Station Live Broadcast is documented for selecting and broadcasting a camera stream. It does not establish that Surveillance Station can loop a prerecorded property-tour file.

Choose where the encoder will run

Separate computer reading the NAS share

A computer can run the encoder while the tour video remains on a NAS share. This is a plausible arrangement, but no specific encoder or network-share looping setup is verified here. Before relying on it, confirm that your chosen software supports looping a file over the network, the video’s codec and audio, YouTube Live output, and automatic restart after a failure. The computer and network connection must remain available for the stream to continue.

Encoder in a NAS container

If your model and DSM version support Container Manager, you can investigate a compatible container-based encoder. Support for Container Manager alone does not prove that a particular container can play and loop your file reliably. Verify compatibility with the NAS processor and DSM version, access permissions for the video folder, supported codecs, network access, restart behavior, and YouTube output before deploying it.

Set up the YouTube Live stream

  1. Check channel eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it in advance. See YouTube’s encoder setup and eligibility instructions.
  2. Prepare the tour file and encoder. Choose a video format, resolution, frame rate, and audio track supported by your encoder. Configure the encoder to repeat the file continuously. Test that the transition from the end back to the beginning is acceptable; confirm the encoder can read the NAS share throughout the test.
  3. Get the connection details. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a stream, then copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s YouTube or RTMP settings. Use the key only in the encoder you control. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.
  4. Prefer RTMPS when supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted transport option. Select it if the encoder supports YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint; protocol availability depends on the encoder and workflow. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and RTMPS guidance.
  5. Match bitrate to the video mode. YouTube lists 10 Mbps as its recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p at 30 frames per second. That figure is for that specific codec and mode, not a universal setting. Check YouTube’s current encoder table for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than copying a number from a different mode. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above the stream bitrate; allow more margin if other devices share the connection.
  6. Test before going live publicly. Use an unlisted stream or another appropriate test setup. Check the preview, image, audio, loop transition, stream health, and whether the encoder reconnects after a brief network interruption. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health in its encoder guidance.
  7. Monitor the actual live session. Watch YouTube’s Live Control Room and the encoder, especially after startup and around the first loop transition. A file playing locally is not proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.

Copyright and property-tour content

Use footage, music, narration, photographs, and other material that you own or have permission to use for a live broadcast. A property tour may include background music, artwork, or identifiable people that require separate rights or consent. YouTube’s live-streaming rules and copyright processes apply to streamed material; review its live-streaming requirements and the copyright safety checklist before broadcasting. Do not assume that a video is cleared merely because it is already uploaded or available elsewhere.

Plan for archives and continuous operation

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a loop that runs longer, do not assume YouTube will save it as one complete, uninterrupted video; verify archive behavior for your workflow and keep your own source file. A continuous stream also depends on the encoder host, NAS share, local network, and internet connection remaining available. Decide who will notice a failure, how the encoder will be restarted, and how you will confirm that the YouTube broadcast has resumed.

Common problems and what to check

  • YouTube rejects the connection: Confirm the stream URL and key match the selected Live Control Room stream, that the key was not reset, and that the encoder is using a protocol and endpoint it supports.
  • The NAS file will not open: Check the share path, account permissions, network reachability, and whether the encoder can read the file format. A mapped drive available to your desktop user may not be available to a container or service account.
  • The picture stutters or YouTube reports poor health: Check sustained upload capacity, not just a speed-test peak; reduce the encoder bitrate or video mode if needed, and preserve the recommended 20% bandwidth headroom.
  • There is no sound: Verify that the source contains an audio track, that the encoder selects it, and that YouTube’s preview receives audio. If the tour is intentionally silent, confirm that this is expected.
  • The video stops at the end: The encoder may be set to play once rather than loop. Confirm the application explicitly supports repeat playback and test the transition before a public stream.
  • The stream does not recover after a drop: Check the encoder’s reconnect and restart settings, NAS availability, and YouTube stream status. Do not assume a container or desktop application will restart correctly without testing it.
  • The broadcast cannot be enabled: Check channel verification and any live-streaming restrictions; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
