You can use a Winamp playlist as the audio source for a continuous YouTube live stream, but Winamp alone does not send a YouTube broadcast. You need an encoder to capture the playlist audio, add a video signal, and send both to YouTube using a stream URL and key. For a stream intended to run around the clock, the player, encoder, computer, power and internet connection must all remain available—and you must have the rights to broadcast every track.
What you need for a 24/7 Winamp stream
- A cleared playlist: permission must cover the specific recordings and compositions, live streaming on YouTube, the relevant territory and the planned use.
- Winamp: playing the playlist you intend to broadcast.
- A software or hardware encoder: it captures the audio and sends the broadcast to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder workflow requires a video signal as well as audio.
- A visual for the stream: for example, a still image or a visual presentation you have rights to use. An audio playlist by itself is not a complete encoder-based video broadcast.
- A reliable operating setup: the player and encoder need to keep running, with continuous power and network access. This is a practical requirement of a continuous broadcast, not an uptime guarantee.
Check music rights before going live
Do not assume that a playlist being playable in Winamp—or available through a radio service—means it can be rebroadcast on YouTube. Check the rights for each track, including the recording and the underlying composition, and confirm that the license covers YouTube live streaming, your territory and the intended duration.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may show a warning, replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it or terminate it. YouTube also warns that licensed music can still be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. If a rights holder requires allowlisting, get confirmation for the channel you will use before broadcasting.
Winamp describes licenses for music use in online video projects, but that general service information does not establish that a particular playlist is cleared for your stream. Winamp for Creators also describes copyright and Content ID services; royalty collection is not a substitute for permission to rebroadcast a track. Its Content ID submission and whitelist processes apply to its own service and do not grant blanket rights for unrelated music. Verify each track’s actual license and Content ID arrangements.

Set up Winamp audio for YouTube
1. Enable live streaming on your YouTube channel
Use YouTube’s live-stream setup and allow time for activation if this is your first broadcast. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave channel activation until the moment you plan to start.
2. Choose an encoder and prepare a video signal
YouTube supports software and hardware encoders. Choose one that can accept the audio input or capture method available on your computer and can send a video signal at the same time. A static visual can keep the production simple; an animated or information-rich visual may require more setup and maintenance. Use only imagery you have the right to broadcast.
The exact steps for routing Winamp audio depend on your operating system and encoder. Use the encoder’s supported system-audio capture or audio-input method, then check its audio meter or preview to confirm that the playlist is reaching it. YouTube’s encoder guidance establishes the need for an encoder and a video stream; it does not specify one universal Winamp-to-encoder routing method.

3. Add the YouTube stream URL and key
In YouTube Live settings, create or select the broadcast and copy its stream URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in a stream, screenshot or public post. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder with the new key.
4. Test the complete signal
Start the Winamp playlist and check that the encoder receives its audio. Confirm that the visual is present, then begin sending the stream from the encoder. Check YouTube’s live dashboard for the incoming signal, audio and any warnings before relying on the broadcast as an around-the-clock station.
5. Keep the system running and monitor it
A local setup depends on the computer staying powered on, Winamp continuing playback, the encoder remaining active and the internet connection staying available. Disable sleep or automatic shutdown if appropriate for the machine, and monitor the broadcast rather than assuming a successful start guarantees continuous playback. Plan how you will notice and recover from a player, encoder, power or network failure.

Plan for YouTube interruptions and archives
Watch YouTube Studio for copyright warnings or other interruptions. If YouTube identifies third-party material, resolve the rights or matching issue rather than assuming that restarting the encoder will clear it. A repeat interruption can affect the broadcast and may lead to further account consequences.
YouTube’s support page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive statement is not a promise that a single live session can run indefinitely, nor does it establish archive behavior for streams longer than 12 hours. If preserving a replay matters, plan a session length under that threshold and verify the resulting archive in YouTube Studio.

Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube receives no signal: confirm that the encoder is sending, the broadcast is selected correctly, and the stream URL and key match the YouTube live settings.
- The video appears but there is no audio: check that Winamp is playing and that the encoder is capturing the intended system-audio source or input. Audio routing differs by operating system and encoder.
- The audio plays locally but not in the broadcast: verify the encoder’s input selection and audio meter, then check the YouTube preview before treating the stream as live.
- YouTube warns about or interrupts the music: check the matched content and rights status. Confirm that the license covers the intended live use and territory, and request channel allowlisting from the rights owner when required. Do not assume a restart resolves a rights issue.
- The stream stops after the computer or connection fails: restore power and internet access, restart the player or encoder as needed, then check YouTube Studio for the stream status and any warnings.
- You expected a replay but cannot find an archive: YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume the same behavior for longer streams; check the live dashboard and archive settings.
Costs and practical trade-offs
A local setup uses your existing computer and encoder if you already have them, but keeping a machine running continuously has practical power, connection and maintenance requirements. YouTube’s encoder documentation does not establish a required mini PC, minimum computer specification or preferred hardware model. If you consider dedicated hardware, choose it based on the encoder’s actual requirements rather than assuming one model is necessary.
A cloud option avoids leaving a home computer and connection running for playback, but it does not solve music licensing or YouTube Content ID issues. Compare the ongoing cost and operating effort with your local setup, and make the rights check independently whichever method you choose.
