You can use VLC’s VLM feature to sequence playlist items on a Raspberry Pi, and YouTube Live can accept an encoder feed over RTMPS. But the official documentation describes these as separate capabilities: it does not verify a direct, working connection from a Raspberry Pi VLC playlist to YouTube. The practical route is to test the playlist on the Pi, then use an encoder setup verified for your software and hardware to send it to YouTube.
What you need to know before starting
- VLC’s documented VLM example broadcasts a playlist as an HTTP MPEG transport stream to a local-network address. That address is not YouTube’s ingest URL.
- YouTube Live’s encoder workflow requires the stream URL and private stream key from Live Control Room. Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it.
- The connection between VLC’s playlist output and a YouTube-compatible encoder depends on the selected software and Pi. The documented examples do not establish a guaranteed bridge configuration, board performance, resolution, frame rate, or 24/7 reliability.
VLC’s stream-output system can send supported input to a file or network, but that general capability is not proof that a particular Raspberry Pi VLC build can deliver a VLM playlist directly to YouTube over RTMPS. See VideoLAN’s stream-output overview.
Prepare VLC on Raspberry Pi OS
Install VLC if you use Raspberry Pi OS Lite
Raspberry Pi OS Desktop includes VLC. Lite does not include it by default. On Lite, install the documented packages:
sudo apt install --no-install-recommends vlc-bin vlc-plugin-base
Raspberry Pi documents cvlc for command-line playback without a graphical interface. The same documentation notes that VLC uses hardware acceleration in Raspberry Pi OS; that does not establish whether a specific board can transcode a particular playlist or sustain a target live-stream quality. See Raspberry Pi OS audio and video documentation.

Test your media and playlist locally
- Put the video or audio files you intend to play on the Pi and confirm their paths.
- Open the files in VLC on Desktop, or use
cvlcon Lite, and confirm they play before configuring a live broadcast. - Check that every playlist item is readable and plays through its ending. Resolve missing files or playback errors locally first.
This test checks local playback only. It does not confirm that VLC’s output can be handed to a separate encoder or that the Pi can encode and send it at a chosen quality.
Use VLC VLM to sequence playlist items
VideoLAN’s VLM example creates one broadcast channel, adds multiple inputs, and keeps the output open as one item ends. Its output is an HTTP MPEG transport stream served on port 8090:

Save the configuration as playlist.vlm and run the documented example command:
vlc --vlm-conf=playlist.vlm
A client on the network can connect to http://<Pi-address>:8090/stream, replacing <Pi-address> with the Pi’s address. This is a local/network VLC broadcast example, not the YouTube ingestion endpoint and not a URL to paste into Live Control Room. Read VideoLAN’s VLM playlist example for the documented configuration.

Connect a compatible encoder to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream and open its stream settings.
- Use the lock icon to reveal the RTMPS stream URL, then copy that URL into an encoder that supports YouTube’s RTMPS ingest.
- Copy the stream key into the encoder’s stream-key field. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, put it in a public configuration file, or share it.
- Configure the chosen encoder to accept the VLC playlist feed. The exact handoff—such as a local network stream or another input method—must be verified for the encoder, VLC build, and Pi you are using; the sources do not establish a universal bridge recipe.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube Live Control Room for an incoming signal before making the event public or scheduling a long broadcast.
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. If the connection fails with an SSL error, check that the encoder uses the RTMPS scheme and the correct host and URL. YouTube’s guidance points to port 443 when needed; its developer guide explains that the server hostname is needed for TLS SNI authentication. See YouTube’s RTMPS help and the RTMPS developer guide.
When HLS may be relevant
YouTube also documents HLS ingest as an alternative for encoders that support it, including cases such as HDR or codecs that RTMP does not support. HLS uses TS segments of 1–4 seconds, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends segments rather than one continuous stream. These requirements describe YouTube’s HLS path; they do not establish that VLC on Raspberry Pi supports sending this playlist by HLS. See YouTube’s HLS setup instructions.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Choose and validate the bridge carefully
Before relying on a setup, confirm that the selected encoder can accept the VLC playlist output, send to YouTube over RTMPS (or a supported HLS workflow), and handle any transcoding the workflow requires. Check whether its latency is acceptable for your use. Test the full chain with your actual files and target Pi before scheduling a public event; local VLC playback alone is not an end-to-end test.
The available documentation does not establish a model-by-model Raspberry Pi recommendation or a target bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or reliability level for this workflow. Those depend on the board, media, encoder, and configuration, so verify them rather than assuming a particular Pi can sustain them.

Troubleshooting
- YouTube shows no incoming stream: Confirm the encoder—not just VLC—is running, that it has the Live Control Room stream URL and matching key, and that it is configured to receive the playlist feed.
- SSL or connection error: Check for an RTMPS URL rather than an RTMP URL, confirm the host and scheme, verify the encoder supports RTMPS, and check port 443 if required. YouTube’s RTMPS help provides connection guidance.
- A client cannot open the VLC example stream: Confirm the VLM process is running, the client uses the Pi’s reachable network address and port 8090, and the VLC output path is the documented
/stream. This checks the local HTTP example, not YouTube delivery. - Playback stops or an item is missing: Recheck each file path and confirm every playlist item plays locally before troubleshooting the live encoder handoff.
- HLS connection or latency is unsuitable: Verify the encoder follows YouTube’s segment and request requirements; HLS is not a drop-in proof of compatibility for a VLC-on-Pi playlist.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps looping uploaded videos, StreamNeo avoids keeping the Pi or another computer running at home: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with no quality tiers; it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for uploaded videos, not a camera broadcast. Learn more at StreamNeo or start the free first day.
