How to Manage Linux Kernel Updates on a VPS

A safe VPS kernel update starts with identifying who controls the booted kernel, using the supported package channel, and preparing recovery access before rebooting.

Update a VPS kernel through the supported package channel for the operating system and image that actually control its boot process, then plan a reboot to activate the new kernel. Before restarting a remote server, confirm you can reach its provider console or rescue environment if it fails to boot or restore networking. Live patching can cover some security fixes without an immediate reboot, but it does not replace routine updates or a reboot into a newer kernel.

First identify which kernel your VPS uses

Do not assume every VPS boots the kernel installed inside its guest operating system. Some provider images or configurations may use a provider-controlled kernel or different boot settings. Check both the running system and your VPS image documentation before changing packages.

  1. Identify the operating system release: cat /etc/os-release.
  2. Record the running kernel: uname -r.
  3. Check the provider’s documentation for the image’s kernel source, boot configuration, and supported update method.
  4. Confirm the distribution, architecture, and kernel package appropriate to that environment before proceeding.

The commands identify the guest OS and currently running kernel; they do not establish who selects the VPS kernel at boot. If provider documentation says the provider manages it, follow that provider’s update and maintenance process rather than assuming a guest package will become the booted kernel.

Install updates through the distribution’s supported channel

Debian

Use the configured Debian repositories and package manager, and check the documentation for the Debian release you are running. Debian’s release notes discuss kernel metapackages and recommend having an appropriate linux-image-* metapackage installed so later package upgrades can track kernel updates. The correct package depends on the system’s architecture and environment; do not copy a package name without verifying it. See Debian’s Bookworm upgrade notes; instructions for a different release may differ.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Ubuntu

Use Ubuntu’s supported APT update and security-update workflow for the installed release. Enabling Livepatch does not automatically turn on APT security updates, so keep the two responsibilities distinct. Check current Ubuntu guidance for your release and the exact kernel before relying on Livepatch coverage.

Other distributions or provider-managed images

Use the distribution or VPS provider’s documented package and boot workflow. The appropriate commands and package names vary, and there is no universal kernel-update command for every VPS. Installing an upstream mainline or custom-built kernel is not the default maintenance path: it adds responsibility for boot configuration and recovery and is generally unnecessary for ordinary security maintenance.

Review the update, then schedule kernel activation

Installing a kernel package and running that kernel are separate events. After the package transaction completes, inspect its output to see whether a new kernel was installed. The running system can continue on its previous kernel until reboot.

  1. Review the package manager’s proposed changes before confirming them, especially on a production VPS.
  2. After installation, check the output and installed packages to determine whether a new kernel was added.
  3. Choose a maintenance window appropriate to the services on the VPS, notify affected users if needed, and stage the change on a representative non-production server when available.
  4. Plan a reboot to activate the new kernel. Debian recommends rebooting at the next available opportunity after a kernel installation; Canonical likewise says a reboot is required to upgrade to a newer kernel version.

There is no general promise of zero downtime for this ordinary update path. A reboot interrupts the guest while it restarts, so assess the impact against your service’s requirements rather than relying on an assumed duration.

Prepare remote recovery access before rebooting

A VPS that does not return may have failed to boot, or it may have booted without restoring network access. Debian warns about these risks for remotely managed systems and recommends precautions such as access through a remote serial terminal. The exact recovery tools depend on your provider.

  • Confirm a recent backup and know how to restore the application and its data.
  • Locate and, where practical, verify access to the provider’s serial console, rescue mode, or equivalent out-of-band recovery route.
  • Make sure you can sign in to the provider control panel without depending on the VPS’s own network connection.
  • Know where the provider documents boot selection and recovery steps before starting the maintenance window.

A backup helps recover data or services, but it does not by itself give you console access or fix a failed boot. Confirm both recovery procedures and an independent way to reach the machine.

Reboot and verify the new kernel and services

  1. Restart the VPS during the planned window using the operating system or provider’s documented procedure.
  2. Confirm the VPS is reachable again. If it is not, use the provider’s documented console or rescue path rather than repeatedly restarting without diagnosis.
  3. Run uname -r and compare the result with the kernel package you intended to activate.
  4. Check that important services are running, storage mounts are present, firewall rules are active, and monitoring has resumed.
  5. If the expected kernel is not running, review the provider’s boot configuration and the distribution’s recovery instructions before making further changes.

Can Livepatch avoid a reboot?

Ubuntu Livepatch can apply supported high- and critical-severity kernel security fixes to a running kernel without an immediate reboot. It is not a way to upgrade to a newer kernel version: Canonical states, “Live kernel patching is not sufficient when you need to upgrade your kernel to a newer version — a reboot is required in that case.” Read Canonical’s guidance on when to reboot.

Coverage depends on the Ubuntu release, kernel flavor, architecture, and exact kernel combination. Check current eligibility and client status in Ubuntu Livepatch documentation rather than assuming a VPS is supported. Livepatch also does not enable APT security updates automatically. Other changes, including CPU microcode, low-level dependencies, or firmware, may require a restart.

Livepatch therefore changes the urgency of some covered fixes; it does not remove the need to install distribution updates, check which kernel is running, or plan a reboot when a newer kernel or another restart-requiring component must be activated. The kernel project’s Live Update Orchestrator documentation describes a specialized kexec-based mechanism that can preserve selected resources when moving between kernel versions. It depends on supported kernel and system components and is not a general-purpose, turnkey no-reboot feature for VPS administrators.

If the VPS does not come back

  • No network response: The machine may still be booting, or networking may not have returned. Use the provider console or rescue environment to inspect the boot state and follow provider-specific recovery guidance.
  • The old kernel is still running: Compare uname -r with the installed kernel packages. Check provider boot settings and the distribution’s release-specific instructions; installing a package alone does not switch the running kernel.
  • Package installation failed: Review the package-manager output and correct the reported package or repository issue through the distribution’s supported channel before scheduling a reboot.
  • Provider-managed kernel or unclear ownership: Pause rather than changing boot settings blindly. Ask the provider which kernel the image uses and how it should be updated.
