How to Stream a Radio Playlist to YouTube with VLC

VLC can play a radio playlist, but YouTube Live needs a compatible encoder and ingest stream. Here’s how to set up the source, verify output and avoid common failures.

You can use VLC to play a radio playlist, but a playlist alone does not send a live broadcast to YouTube. YouTube requires a compatible encoder to send an audio/video stream through a supported ingest protocol. The available documentation does not confirm a current, reliable VLC-only workflow for sending a playlist directly to YouTube Live over RTMPS. The practical approach is to use VLC as the audio source and a separately configured encoder for the YouTube stream.

What you need to stream a playlist

Think of the setup as two separate jobs: VLC reads and plays the audio, while an encoder packages a compatible live output and sends it to YouTube. VideoLAN says, “VLC is able to stream all that it can read,” but that broad capability does not establish that a current VLC version can directly deliver a YouTube-compatible RTMPS stream. VideoLAN’s streaming overview describes VLC’s general streaming capabilities; it is not confirmation of a direct YouTube Live configuration.

  • Playlist: A source for audio, such as a list of tracks or radio streams that VLC can play.
  • Encoder: Software or a service that creates a compatible live output from the audio and sends it to YouTube.
  • YouTube Live configuration: The broadcast’s ingest details and private stream key, which you enter in the encoder.

A static M3U or PLS playlist is for selecting media to play; it is not itself a YouTube live ingest stream. HLS ingest is different: YouTube specifies media-playlist and segment requirements, so an ordinary audio playlist should not be treated as a correctly formed HLS ingest playlist. See YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance.

Set up YouTube Live and protect the stream key

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or configure the live stream using YouTube’s current live-stream setup.
  2. Open the stream’s encoder or stream settings and note the ingest details and stream key shown for that broadcast.
  3. Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Do not publish it, include it in a public screenshot, or share it in a playlist or video description.
  4. Enter the ingest details and key in the compatible encoder you choose, then start the encoder and check the broadcast in YouTube’s live control room.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP, for live ingest. The exact controls and labels in Studio can change, so use YouTube’s current live-stream setup guidance rather than relying on a fixed menu path.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Match the encoder output to YouTube’s requirements

Use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance when configuring output. It lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video codecs, and AAC or MP3 audio; it calls for constant bitrate encoding and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with a four-second maximum. The appropriate resolution and bitrate depend on the output you intend to send, so consult YouTube’s guidance for the relevant resolution instead of applying one bitrate to every stream.

A radio playlist contains audio, but YouTube’s encoder guidance describes a live audio/video stream setup. Do not assume that sending audio alone, or merely opening a playlist, will produce an accepted YouTube broadcast. Configure an encoder that can package your audio source into an output compatible with YouTube’s current requirements.

Use VLC as the playlist source

  1. Open the playlist in VLC and confirm that its entries play as intended. Check that remote radio URLs are reachable and that local tracks are available to the computer running VLC.
  2. Configure a separate compatible encoder to take VLC’s audio as its source and produce the required live output. The exact audio-routing method depends on the encoder, operating system and VLC version.
  3. In the encoder, choose a YouTube-supported ingest method and enter the broadcast’s ingest details and private stream key.
  4. Set the output codecs, constant bitrate behavior and keyframe interval to match YouTube’s current encoder recommendations.
  5. Start the encoder, then verify that YouTube receives the broadcast and that both audio and any required video output are present in the live control room.
  6. Monitor playlist transitions and the broadcast after it starts. A playlist may end, contain an unavailable source, or stop advancing; YouTube ingest does not itself guarantee continuous playback.

The available official documentation does not establish a current VLC-only RTMPS setup, nor a verified exact menu sequence for a particular VLC version and operating system. VLC’s general streaming features are not enough to infer YouTube compatibility. Before relying on a VLC-only configuration, check the documentation for your exact VLC release and platform and verify that the resulting stream meets YouTube’s current ingest requirements.

Check music rights before going live

Only stream recordings or radio content that you have permission to broadcast on YouTube. Rights and platform rules can depend on the specific music, recording, territory and use. Review the rights for every playlist item and YouTube’s current music and live-stream rules before broadcasting; do not assume that publicly accessible radio audio is cleared for rebroadcast.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that the encoder is running, the ingest address and stream key are entered correctly, and the selected ingest protocol is supported. If you changed or reset the key, update it in the encoder.
  • The stream connects but has no sound: Confirm that VLC is actually playing the intended playlist item and that the encoder is capturing VLC’s audio output rather than a muted or different input.
  • YouTube rejects or cannot process the output: Compare the encoder’s codec, constant-bitrate setting and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Also confirm that the output is a compatible audio/video stream, not a bare playlist file.
  • A track or station stops mid-broadcast: Check the source URL, network access and playlist behavior. A playlist can contain dead links or finite tracks; a successful YouTube connection does not repair a stopped source.
  • You are attempting HLS with an M3U or PLS file: These are not interchangeable formats for this purpose. Follow YouTube’s HLS media-playlist and segment requirements if using HLS ingest.
  • You suspect a VLC menu or option should send directly to YouTube: Do not assume that a general VLC streaming option supports YouTube’s current RTMPS ingest. Confirm the exact version/platform workflow in current documentation or use an encoder with documented YouTube ingest support.
