Before you set up OBS
Confirm your channel can go live
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its current live-streaming overview also says creators must be at least 16. First-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable access well before the planned broadcast. Check YouTube’s live-streaming overview for current eligibility details.
Install OBS and VLC
YouTube lists OBS as open-source encoder software available at no charge. To use OBS’s playlist-capable VLC Video source, VLC must also be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC so the source can be detected. See the OBS VLC Video Source documentation.
Build and configure the playlist
- Add the right source. In OBS, select the scene you will use. In the Sources dock, click the add button and choose VLC Video. The built-in Media Source is suited to an individual media file; use VLC Video for a multi-file playlist.
- Add files in the intended order. In the VLC Video source properties, add the video files to its playlist and arrange them as needed. Keep Shuffle Playlist off if they must play sequentially.
- Set whether it repeats. OBS documentation says Loop Playlist is on by default. Leave it on for a repeating sequence, or switch it off for a one-pass event. Confirm the setting rather than relying on the default.
- Keep the source active. The VLC Video source’s visibility behavior affects playback when it is hidden. The documented default is to stop when not visible and restart when visible. Keep the source visible in the active scene throughout the stream, or deliberately change its behavior if your scene setup requires it.
- Check picture and sound. Start playback in OBS and confirm the expected video appears in the canvas and audio reaches the mixer. Make sure the scene and source remain active; a correctly ordered playlist cannot help if the source is hidden or its files fail to play.
OBS’s labels may vary by build; the settings above are described in the OBS source documentation.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube or the appropriate service option, and enter the URL and key if prompted. YouTube describes the key as the credential that directs the encoder’s feed to your stream; keep it private.
- Choose RTMPS ingestion when available. YouTube recommends the encrypted RTMPS protocol.
- Start the OBS stream as a test, then use Live Control Room’s preview to check that YouTube is receiving it before you make the broadcast public.
Exact Live Control Room labels can change. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers stream configuration and keys.
Test bandwidth, playback, and the viewer experience
Your internet connection needs enough upload capacity for the total outgoing stream bitrate. YouTube recommends keeping about 20% headroom above that bitrate. Check the actual bitrate configured in OBS and test over the connection you will use for the broadcast; a speed test alone does not confirm that a long stream will remain stable.

Rights and YouTube policy still apply
Prerecording a video does not exempt a live broadcast from YouTube’s rules. The stream must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and copyrighted live-broadcast matches or strikes can lead to restrictions. Only include material you own or have permission to stream, including music, footage, and other embedded content. Review YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions before broadcasting.

Troubleshoot common playlist-stream problems
VLC Video is missing from the source menu
Install VLC and restart OBS. If OBS is 64-bit, make sure VLC is 64-bit too. The VLC Video source depends on the VLC installation.
The playlist plays in the wrong order or stops after one pass
Open the source properties and check the file order, Shuffle Playlist, and Loop Playlist. Shuffle should be off for a fixed order; looping should be on if the sequence must restart after its final item.

The video pauses or restarts after switching scenes
Check whether the VLC Video source is hidden when the scene changes. Its documented default behavior is to stop when not visible and restart when visible. Keep it visible in the active scene or adjust the source’s visibility behavior deliberately.
YouTube receives no feed or reports an unstable stream
Verify that OBS has the correct YouTube server URL and stream key, then check the connection and upload capacity. Leave YouTube’s recommended roughly 20% upload headroom over the outgoing bitrate and run another preview test. If you replace a key in Live Control Room, update it in OBS as well.

Viewers cannot hear the playlist
Check that the source is playing and that its audio reaches the OBS mixer. Confirm the test on YouTube’s preview or watch page rather than relying only on the OBS meters.
When a local OBS playlist is the right fit
OBS gives you direct control of the local files and scene, but the computer running OBS and its internet connection must remain available for the broadcast. For a one-off scheduled stream or a playlist you want to supervise locally, this workflow keeps the setup in your hands. YouTube’s encoder directory also lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for continuous streaming of prerecorded videos; current pricing and terms are not established here, so check the service directly before choosing it.
Or let it run in the cloud
For an always-on prerecorded YouTube channel, StreamNeo runs the playlist from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing needs to stay on at home. Each slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free day.
