To keep a model home tour live on YouTube all day, send a continuous camera feed through a compatible encoder, configure the broadcast in YouTube Studio, and test the complete camera-to-viewer setup at the property before launch. Plan the camera coverage, internet connection, power, privacy settings, and response to outages; YouTube’s encoding guidance does not establish whether a particular home or installation is suitable.
Choose the right production setup
Fixed view or guided tour
A fixed camera aimed at a key room is the simpler production. A guided tour with changing views needs a production path that can accept and manage the selected cameras. YouTube supports encoder-based productions using external video and audio equipment, including multi-camera setups. Its verified encoder list also includes CamStreamer for compatible Axis cameras and describes it as supporting continuous and scheduled streams. Confirm compatibility and operating requirements for the exact camera and software before buying or installing them; not every camera can send a feed directly to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder guide lists supported approaches and encoders.
Software, hardware, or camera-based encoder
YouTube supports both software and hardware encoders. Choose based on the camera inputs, production controls, monitoring, and whether staff will operate the system. For an unattended fixed view, investigate a compatible camera-and-app route; for multiple views or external audio, choose an encoder that supports the equipment and workflow. A verified listing is not a guarantee that a particular installation will work without testing.
Enable YouTube Live and create the broadcast
- Enable live streaming in advance. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help. Do not leave this until the planned launch.
- Create or schedule a live stream in YouTube Studio. Set the title, description, and audience privacy deliberately. YouTube offers public, unlisted, and private options; their suitability depends on who should be able to find or view the tour.
- Copy the stream key and server URL shown in Studio into the encoder. The stream key identifies the feed the encoder sends for YouTube to accept. Restrict it to authorized operators and reset it if it is exposed. Follow the Studio and encoder instructions for the selected workflow. YouTube’s encoder guide explains the encoder connection.
- Start an end-to-end test. Confirm that the encoder connects and that the live picture and sound reach the YouTube watch page before the intended launch.
Set up a continuous tour and any separate programming
A YouTube broadcast is the event or video presented to viewers; a stream carries the audio-video feed. For one uninterrupted tour, configure an ongoing broadcast and its stream. YouTube’s Live API describes a 24/7 feed continuing while a separate broadcast, such as an interview, is added at the same time. It also describes reusing a stream for recurring broadcasts when only one event is live at once. These options can support a persistent tour alongside occasional programmed segments, but they require a workflow planned around whether broadcasts are simultaneous or recurring. Choose picture, frame rate, and encoder settings
Pick a resolution and frame rate the camera, encoder, and actual upstream connection can sustain continuously. YouTube’s published recommendations include 5 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/30 fps. For the listed RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Use a supported video and audio codec, and consult YouTube’s current table for other resolution and frame-rate combinations rather than extrapolating from the 1080p/30 recommendation. YouTube’s live encoder settings provide the current technical guidance.
These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that the model home’s internet can carry the selected settings. Test at the intended quality from the installed camera location, with the planned audio and representative movement. If the connection cannot hold the chosen setting steadily, lower the resolution or bitrate and test again.

Test the complete installation and plan for interruptions
- Check every link in the chain: installed camera, audio if used, encoder, stream key, internet service, and the public-facing YouTube watch page.
- Use realistic content in the test. YouTube advises testing audio and video motion similar to the planned program; a static encoder preview may not reveal issues that appear during a real tour.
- Monitor stream health and messages. Watch the encoder and YouTube’s stream-health feedback during the test and while the broadcast is running.
- Assign an operator or response plan. Decide who will act if the feed drops or quality degrades. YouTube offers encoder auto-start and auto-stop controls, but site power and network backup must be sized to the property and the builder’s uptime target.
A site survey should establish upstream capacity, reliable power, camera placement, lighting, and what backup is practical. YouTube’s technical documentation does not certify the network, power, or uptime of a particular home.
Set audience access and playback behavior
- Public: use when the tour should be discoverable to the general audience.
- Unlisted or private: choose when access should be less discoverable or restricted, based on the intended viewers and YouTube’s controls.
- Schedule the broadcast: useful when viewers should see an upcoming listing or receive a notification.
- DVR: enable if viewers should be able to pause and rewind the live feed.
- Latency: lower latency is most useful when interacting with viewers. YouTube notes that lower latency can mean more playback buffering, and it is less important when the creator is not interacting with the audience.

Account for property permissions and viewer privacy
Before filming, confirm permission to record in the property and determine whether occupants, visitors, neighboring property, or private areas could appear. Set camera framing and any notices for the actual site and jurisdiction. YouTube’s technical setup instructions do not decide those legal or property-specific questions. Avoid showing access codes, security equipment details, personal documents, or other information the builder does not intend to publish.
