To loop a forest ambience video on YouTube Live with FFmpeg, create a YouTube live stream, copy its RTMPS server URL and stream key, then run FFmpeg with -re and -stream_loop -1 before the input file. The first option paces a local file in real time; the second repeats it indefinitely. Check the preview, audio, rights, and upload capacity before going live.
What you need before starting
- A verified YouTube channel that has had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, as required by YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- FFmpeg installed on a computer that can read the video file and maintain the internet connection for the full broadcast.
- A forest ambience video with the intended sound included. A combined video-and-audio file is simplest for this workflow.
- Upload bandwidth sufficient for the selected stream bitrate, with headroom for network variation.
- Permission to livestream both the footage and audio, and to retain them in a YouTube archive if you plan to keep one.
Create or select a YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room. Create a stream or choose a scheduled event.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Use the exact values YouTube provides; the format can vary. A stream key is a credential, so keep it private. If it is exposed, reset it in Studio.
- Choose the event’s privacy setting—public, private, or unlisted—deliberately. For a first run, a private or unlisted test can let you inspect the stream before sharing it more widely.
For a scheduled event, start FFmpeg and wait for the incoming preview. Check picture and sound, then select Go live in Live Control Room. For an immediate stream, follow the control room’s current flow and confirm that YouTube shows the stream as live. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and stream settings guidance.
Run FFmpeg with an infinitely looping input
In the example below, replace the placeholder destination with the exact RTMPS URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Do not publish a real key or save it in a shared script. The command assumes forest-ambience.mp4 already contains both the desired footage and ambience audio.
STREAM_URL='rtmps://YOUR_SERVER_URL_FROM_LIVE_CONTROL_ROOM/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i forest-ambience.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-b:v 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "$STREAM_URL"
What the key options do
-rereads the file at its native frame rate instead of sending it as fast as the computer can process it. FFmpeg documents this real-time pacing for use cases such as live streaming.-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely. It is an input option, so it must appear before the corresponding-i.-i forest-ambience.mp4selects the local source file. Input options go before the input; output encoding and format options go after it.-c:v libx264encodes video as H.264;-preset veryfasttrades some compression efficiency for lower encoding effort. The example usesyuv420pfor pixel format compatibility.-b:v 10Msets the target video bitrate, while-maxrate 10Mand-bufsize 20Mconstrain rate variation.-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP, which is a two-second keyframe interval at 30 fps.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100encodes AAC audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. This matches YouTube’s published stereo audio guidance.-f flvselects the output container used for RTMP-family ingest.
This is a starting configuration for 1080p30, not a tested result for every file, FFmpeg build, computer, or network. FFmpeg’s documentation explains input looping and real-time input options.

Match the encoder settings to the source and connection
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; up to 60 fps; constant-bitrate encoding; and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends RTMPS, a two-second keyframe interval, and no interval longer than four seconds. For SDR, its advanced settings include Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth. Follow the settings appropriate to your chosen codec and source rather than mixing values from different targets.
1080p30 H.264 example
For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube’s encoder settings page lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 10 Mbps as the recommended video bitrate. Those figures apply to that resolution and frame rate, not every stream. The sample command’s 10 Mbps video target and 60-frame GOP assume 1080p30. If your source uses another frame rate, choose a keyframe interval that corresponds to about two seconds; if its resolution or frame rate differs, use YouTube’s corresponding bitrate guidance.

Leave upload headroom
YouTube Help says total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. This is YouTube’s recommendation, not a reliability guarantee. The total includes audio as well as video, and a connection that only barely meets the target can still fluctuate. If bandwidth is constrained, lower the output resolution or frame rate and select settings suited to that target. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and streaming tips before a long broadcast.
Test with similar motion and audio to the planned stream. Watch Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health messages, listen for distortion or missing sound, and continue monitoring audio and video quality during the event.

Handle separate audio, loop points, and long broadcasts
If ambience audio is a separate file
The command above does not add a separate audio track. If you use one, loop and pace that input deliberately, map the intended video and audio streams, and check their synchronization and levels before going live. Two independently looping files do not necessarily have matching durations or seamless loop points. For a basic setup, prepare and validate a combined audiovisual file first.
Check the loop transition
Watch and listen across the end-to-start transition before broadcasting. A visible jump, a gap, a click, or a change in ambience can repeat throughout a long stream. If the source does not loop cleanly, edit or prepare a seamless version and test it in advance.

Plan for the archive boundary
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If you need a recording, treat that as an operational boundary: end the stream and verify the archive in Studio, and keep a separate local master where appropriate. Automatic archiving does not ensure the FFmpeg process stays uninterrupted or that an archive is error-free. YouTube advises stopping the encoder after the event ends.

Confirm that your rights cover both the forest footage and the ambience recording. Use original material, appropriately licensed assets, or other content whose permissions allow livestream transmission and any archive you intend to retain. Keep license records and check attribution, modification, commercial-use, and duration conditions. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance cautions creators to ensure their audio and video do not infringe others’ content; a file being available online does not itself grant broadcast rights.

Preflight and troubleshooting
Before starting FFmpeg
- Confirm channel eligibility and the correct event in Live Control Room.
- Copy the event’s server URL and key securely; verify that neither is stale or mistyped.
- Play the source file locally and check that it has the intended picture and sound.
- Confirm rights for both tracks and any archive use.
- Choose resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval for the source and available upload capacity.
- Start early enough to inspect YouTube’s preview. Look for black frames, stutters, loop discontinuities, audio problems, and stream-health warnings.
- Monitor the stream during broadcast, stop the encoder when finished, and verify the archive if needed.
Common symptoms and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Incorrect server URL or key, wrong event, or key changed after the command was prepared. | Copy the current URL and key from the intended event in Live Control Room. Keep them private; reset a compromised key. |
| Stream starts too quickly or the file ends | -re or -stream_loop -1 is missing or placed after the input. |
Place both input options before -i; FFmpeg options apply to the next file. |
| Buffering, dropped frames, or poor stream health | Bitrate exceeds stable upload capacity, or encoding/network performance varies. | Check stream-health messages and available upload bandwidth. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom. |
| Black picture, missing audio, or an FFmpeg input error | Wrong filename or path, unexpected streams/codecs, or a source that does not contain the assumed audio. | Verify the file path and inspect/play the source locally. Adapt the input and stream mapping to the actual media rather than assuming the sample file structure. |
| Audio drifts, cuts out, or clicks at the loop | Separate media inputs may have different durations, or the file’s loop point is abrupt. | Validate synchronization and the end-to-start transition. Prepare a combined or edited file with a suitable loop point. |
| No archive appears as expected | The event may not meet YouTube’s automatic-archive duration guidance, or archive processing may not be complete. | For a recording, keep the event under the stated 12-hour boundary, end it cleanly, check Studio, and retain a local master. |
