The NAS supplies the files; OBS or another compatible encoder creates the live stream. YouTube does not take a NAS media-library playlist directly.
How the NAS-to-YouTube setup works
The practical path is NAS storage → computer that can read the NAS files → playlist-capable encoder → YouTube Live Control Room. A common option is OBS Studio with its VLC Video source. The computer must be able to access each file reliably for the duration of the stream.
A NAS may be able to run an encoder itself, but that depends on its model, software, codecs, processing resources, and network access. General NAS media-server support does not establish that it can encode and send a YouTube live stream. Synology’s legacy DSM 6.2.3 documentation describes serving media to devices on a local network, not a universal encoder setup.
Prepare the VOD playlist and NAS files
- Set the play order. Put the gaming VOD files in the intended sequence and decide whether the show should repeat the list or shuffle it.
- Check the media. Open each file and confirm its picture and audio play correctly. A file that cannot be read or decoded by the playback setup will interrupt or break the playlist.
- Access the NAS from the OBS computer. Use your operating system’s normal network-share method, then test that the account running OBS can open every file from that share. Keep the share available while streaming.
- Test the network path. Play the files from the NAS before going live. If playback pauses or files are inaccessible locally, resolve the share, permissions, or network issue first; YouTube cannot fix a source-side interruption.
Do not assume that a NAS vendor’s DLNA or media-library feature is itself an input to OBS or a YouTube encoder. The files need to be accessible to the playback or encoding process.

Build the playlist in OBS with VLC Video
- Install VLC on the computer running OBS. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed.
- Add the source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene you plan to stream.
- Add the NAS files. In the source’s playlist controls, add the VOD files using their accessible network-share paths. OBS documents that VLC Video can play a playlist and offers loop and shuffle controls; see OBS Media Sources.
- Choose loop or shuffle behavior. Enable looping if the playlist should continue from the beginning after the final file. Enable shuffle only if a changing order is intended.
- Rehearse the whole sequence. Check file order, transitions, audio levels, and continued access to the NAS. Use a private or unlisted test stream if appropriate, and confirm the result in YouTube before a public broadcast.
OBS’s VLC Video source is suited to a file playlist; it is different from adding a single Media Source. If a file fails in the playlist, test it separately in VLC and verify that OBS can still reach its NAS path.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream.
- In OBS’s streaming settings, enter the YouTube server URL and stream key provided for that stream. YouTube’s instructions say to enter the Live server URL and stream key in the encoder; see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Start streaming from OBS. For a scheduled broadcast, use the preview in Live Control Room, check that the incoming picture and sound are correct, and follow YouTube’s Go Live process.
- Monitor the stream and end it through YouTube’s live controls when the broadcast is finished.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited encoder guidance does not promise an automatic archive for streams lasting 12 hours or longer.

Alternative: send a file with FFmpeg
FFmpeg can send real-time media output to an RTMP server. Its protocol documentation demonstrates file streaming with the -re option and an RTMP output URL: FFmpeg Protocols Documentation. This is a software route for readers comfortable configuring command-line media tools, not proof that a particular NAS can run FFmpeg.
The documented example is not a ready-made YouTube playlist configuration. You must separately work out playlist handling, YouTube’s current endpoint and stream-key setup, restart behavior, available codecs, and safe handling of the stream key. Confirm that your system can access the NAS files and has the runtime and resources required before relying on this approach.

Choose the ingest protocol you need
For a typical OBS setup, use the protocol supported by your encoder and the stream settings shown in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube also documents HLS for compatible encoders. HLS sends media in segments and has higher latency than RTMP; see Set up an HLS stream. The cited guidance does not establish a reason to add HLS complexity for an ordinary gaming VOD playlist, so use it when a requirement calls for it.
Troubleshoot common failures
- OBS cannot open a VOD: Confirm VLC is installed, the file plays in VLC, and the OBS computer can still access the NAS path with the account running OBS.
- The playlist stops or skips: Check that every file is reachable and playable, then verify the intended playlist and loop settings in the VLC Video source.
- Playback stutters: Test the same file from the NAS outside OBS. Check for an unstable network-share connection or playback issue before changing YouTube settings; the cause cannot be diagnosed from a generic bandwidth or CPU target.
- YouTube receives no stream: Check that OBS is using the server URL and stream key for the correct Live Control Room stream, then verify that OBS has begun streaming.
- The scheduled stream is not public yet: Check the Live Control Room preview and complete YouTube’s Go Live step for the scheduled broadcast.
- The archive is missing: The cited YouTube guidance guarantees automatic archiving only for streams under 12 hours. It does not establish the same result for longer streams.
