To stream a continuous sequence of local video files through OBS, add them to a VLC Video source, keep Shuffle Playlist off, and enable Loop Playlist. OBS’s built-in Media Source repeats one file; it is not the built-in multi-file playlist source. If by “YouTube playlist” you mean a playlist webpage on YouTube, that is a different, less reliable workflow—not a supported Media Source input.
First, identify what you want OBS to play
“YouTube playlist” can mean either a set of video files on your computer that you want to broadcast to YouTube, or a playlist webpage hosted on YouTube. OBS’s documented playlist workflow is for local files. A YouTube webpage URL is not a direct media file to put into Media Source.
| OBS source | Best suited to | Loop and order | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One supported local media file | Its Loop setting repeats that file | Not the documented multi-file playlist source. OBS Media Sources documentation. |
| VLC Video | A sequence of local video files | Loop Playlist repeats the list; Shuffle Playlist controls whether order is randomized | Requires VLC installed. For 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS Media Sources documentation. |
| Browser Source | Displaying a webpage in an OBS scene | Reliable continuous autoplay of a YouTube playlist is not established by the cited OBS guide | OBS describes it as a webpage source, not a guaranteed YouTube playlist player. OBS Sources Guide. |
Set up a continuous local-file playlist
-
Install VLC that matches OBS
Install VLC before adding the source. OBS’s documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. If VLC Video is missing from the source list, check that VLC is installed and that the architecture matches.
-
Add a VLC Video source
In the OBS scene where the playlist should appear, use the Sources box and click +, then choose VLC Video. Give the source a clear name and confirm.

Populate the playlist with local files
In the VLC Video source properties, add the video files you want to play and arrange them in the desired order. These should be files available to the computer running OBS, not YouTube watch-page URLs.
-
Set ordering and looping
Leave Shuffle Playlist off to preserve list order, and enable Loop Playlist so playback returns to the first item after the final one. OBS documents those as the default settings. OBS Media Sources documentation.

Choose what happens when the source is hidden
OBS’s default behavior is Stop when not visible, restart when visible. If the source must continue playing while hidden—for example, because another scene is active—select the continue-when-not-visible behavior in the source properties. “Visible” means visible in the active scene; it does not mean the OBS application window is on screen. OBS Media Sources documentation.
-
Check the scene and test the full sequence
Confirm the source is visible in the intended scene, check that its audio is routed and audible, and preview scene changes. Test the actual files through a full playlist cycle and for the duration you expect to broadcast. OBS documents playlist looping, but does not promise gapless transitions or uninterrupted streaming.

If you mean a playlist webpage on YouTube
Do not paste a YouTube watch-page or playlist URL into Media Source as though it were a video file. OBS’s Media Source documentation describes local media formats. An OBS community support discussion likewise describes a YouTube URL as leading to a webpage/player rather than a direct media file; that is community guidance, not a formal compatibility guarantee. OBS forum discussion.
Browser Source is intended to display webpages, but the official OBS guide does not establish that a YouTube playlist will autoplay continuously and reliably inside it. If you try this route, test it in your exact scene and account conditions before relying on it for a live broadcast. For predictable playlist playback in OBS, use local files with VLC Video instead.

Common problems and fixes
- VLC Video is absent from the source menu: install VLC; if OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC. Restart OBS after installation if the source still does not appear.
- Only one file repeats: check whether you added Media Source. That source’s Loop setting repeats a single file; use VLC Video for a list.
- The playlist stops after the last item: open VLC Video properties and enable Loop Playlist.
- Items play in an unexpected order: turn off Shuffle Playlist and verify the playlist order.
- Playback stops or restarts during a scene change: adjust the source’s visibility behavior. The default stops when hidden and restarts when visible.
- A YouTube URL does not behave like a file: a YouTube page is not a direct media file for Media Source. Browser Source can show webpages, but continuous YouTube playlist autoplay is not guaranteed by the cited documentation.
- There are gaps, silence, or interruptions: test transitions and audio with the exact files and scene setup. Loop support alone does not establish gapless playback or an uninterrupted live broadcast.
Copyright and YouTube considerations
OBS can play files you provide, but that does not establish that you have permission to broadcast them. Use recordings you own or have the necessary rights to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream policies before going live. A technically working loop does not make third-party material authorized.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos live on a YouTube channel without leaving OBS or a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos—not a camera feed—and streams to YouTube only.
