To stream a 4K playlist continuously from a VPS, prepare a compatible concat playlist, run FFmpeg at real-time pace with an infinite input loop, and push the output to YouTube over RTMPS using the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room. For H.264 SDR, YouTube recommends 30 Mbps at 2160p30 or 35 Mbps at 2160p60, with constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval. The command below is a configurable template—not a tested recipe or a guarantee that a particular VPS can sustain 4K encoding and upload.
What you need before starting
- A VPS with enough sustained upload capacity and, if re-encoding, enough CPU headroom for your chosen 4K profile. There is no universal VPS size established for this workflow; monitor the actual host during a test.
- A current FFmpeg build with the input demuxer and encoder you intend to use. Check the build’s documentation and available encoders.
- Video files you own or have permission to broadcast. Inspect their stream properties before combining them.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming and access to YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube may require account verification or other eligibility steps; check the current requirements in your account.
- The stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in a script, repository, screenshot, or log. Reset it if exposed.
YouTube accepts RTMP/RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS for its secure transport. Use the ingest URL and key supplied by Live Control Room rather than guessing an endpoint. YouTube’s live encoder settings and stream setup guidance describe the platform-side configuration.
Inspect and prepare the playlist
Check every file’s streams
Before building the playlist, inspect each file for video and audio codecs, dimensions, frame rate, pixel format, and audio layout. FFprobe is commonly distributed with FFmpeg and can report these properties; consult the documentation for the installed version. Files that differ in codec, resolution, frame rate, timestamps, or audio layout may not join cleanly through concat streamcopy.
The concat demuxer is best suited to inputs with compatible stream properties. If files vary, normalize them first or use a concat filter workflow that decodes and re-encodes them. Re-encoding provides more control over output consistency but consumes VPS CPU. Test transitions between representative clips before scheduling a long broadcast. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation and FFmpeg’s joining and concatenation FAQ.

Create a concat-demuxer playlist
Make a text file such as playlist.txt, with one file entry per video, in the order you want them played:
file '/path/to/first-video.mp4'
file '/path/to/second-video.mp4'
file '/path/to/third-video.mp4'
Use paths appropriate to the VPS and verify quoting and escaping against the installed FFmpeg concat documentation. In the command below, -safe 0 allows paths that the concat demuxer’s safe mode might reject. Use it only with a playlist you control; do not feed untrusted playlist files to FFmpeg.
Choose the 4K output profile
For H.264 SDR live ingest, YouTube’s current published recommendations distinguish 2160p30 from 2160p60. Keep the codec, frame rate, and bitrate aligned; the figures below are not interchangeable with the separate AV1 or HEVC ranges.

| Output profile | YouTube H.264 SDR recommendation | Two-second GOP example |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p30 | 30 Mbps | 60 frames |
| 2160p60 | 35 Mbps | 120 frames |
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. At 4K, low-latency optimization is not available. Its published AV1 and H.265/HEVC bitrate-setting ranges are 8–35 Mbps at 2160p30 and 10–40 Mbps at 2160p60; those ranges are for those codecs, not H.264. Confirm the appropriate encoder and ingest compatibility for your chosen codec in YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →RTMPS is the usual choice for an FFmpeg live push. YouTube also documents HLS ingest for particular workflows; that route has segment and rolling-playlist requirements and higher latency. Its HLS guidance specifies segments of 1–4 seconds and no more than five outstanding segments. Use HLS only when the workflow requires it and your encoder meets the current specification: YouTube HLS ingest setup.
Run FFmpeg and loop the playlist
This example illustrates a 30 fps SDR H.264 transcode to 2160p30 at YouTube’s 30 Mbps recommendation. Replace the playlist path and ingest URL/key securely, and adjust the profile to your files and installed FFmpeg build. It is a template, not a tested command.

YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS; ensure the source has audio if the program is expected to include it.-f flvselects the conventional RTMP-family output muxer.
If the files are already compatible with each other and the target stream, streamcopy (-c copy) can reduce CPU use and avoids re-encoding. It cannot resize, change frame rate, apply filters, or repair incompatible stream properties. Do not assume streamcopy will produce the required 4K profile simply because the source files are labeled 4K. For mixed inputs or a required output profile, normalize or transcode and account for the added compute load. FFmpeg describes streamcopy and transcoding in its documentation.
Set up YouTube and validate before a long stream
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream and copy its ingest URL and stream key. Choose RTMPS where available. Keep the key private; replace it in Live Control Room if it is compromised.
- Confirm the output profile. Match the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate mode, bitrate, and keyframe interval to the selected YouTube ingest profile. The sample command assumes compatible 30 fps SDR media and H.264 at 2160p30.
- Start a private or unlisted test. Use representative clips, including a transition between files, audio, motion, and any unusually demanding material. YouTube recommends testing before going live.
- Check YouTube’s incoming stream and health indicators. Verify the received resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio, and transitions in Live Control Room; a successful FFmpeg process alone does not confirm that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
- Watch the VPS while the test runs. Check CPU use and sustained outbound bandwidth. The stream’s video bitrate is not the whole network requirement: allow headroom for audio and transport overhead. If the host cannot sustain the chosen profile, pre-encode the files, lower the profile, or choose a more capable host.
- Begin the intended broadcast. Confirm the stream is live and monitor both the host and YouTube health information. For a finite playlist, remove the infinite loop option.
YouTube’s published bitrate figures are recommendations for the specified codec and frame rate, not a promise that every VPS or source file will work. Its general guidance is to test with representative audio and movement and select a quality your connection can sustain: live encoder settings and live streaming help.

Troubleshoot common failures
YouTube does not detect an incoming stream
- Check that the stream key and RTMPS URL were copied from the correct Live Control Room stream, and that no characters were truncated.
- Check outbound network access from the VPS and review FFmpeg’s connection error without exposing the key.
- Confirm the channel is allowed to go live and the stream is configured in Live Control Room.
The connection works but YouTube reports poor health
- Compare the incoming bitrate, resolution, and frame rate with the selected codec profile and YouTube’s recommendations.
- Check for VPS CPU saturation during encoding and insufficient or unstable outbound bandwidth. Pre-encode media or reduce the output target if the host cannot sustain the chosen profile.
- Check keyframe cadence: YouTube recommends two seconds and advises against intervals over four seconds.
FFmpeg fails at a playlist transition or output is erratic
- Inspect the files for differing codecs, dimensions, frame rates, pixel formats, timestamps, or audio layouts.
- Test a short playlist segment. Normalize inputs to compatible streams or use a concat filter and re-encode when streamcopy cannot produce a consistent output.
- Check playlist syntax, path escaping, file permissions, and the installed FFmpeg build’s concat documentation.
There is no audio, or audio breaks between files
- Confirm each source actually contains an audio stream and that the playlist’s audio layouts are compatible.
- Check the output mapping and AAC encoder settings; normalize audio where sources differ rather than assuming concat will reconcile them.
The stream stops when the playlist ends
Confirm -stream_loop -1 is placed before the relevant input’s -i. FFmpeg defines -1 as infinite looping for the input. If you intend a scheduled finite broadcast, leave the option out. See the FFmpeg options documentation.
Copyright, reused material, and monetization
Streaming a file as a live broadcast does not grant rights to its music, footage, narration, photographs, or other material. Secure the necessary permissions for every element and review YouTube’s current copyright rules before broadcasting. A private or unlisted test is useful for technical checks, but it does not establish that you have rights to the content or that a public stream will comply with YouTube policies.
Rights compliance and monetization eligibility are separate questions. A playlist of repetitive or reused material may raise policy issues even when you have permission to use it; review YouTube’s current channel monetization policies rather than assuming that an always-on stream is eligible. Keep records of licenses and permissions, and do not use the stream to rebroadcast documentaries or other copyrighted works without authorization.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that stays live around the clock, rather than learning to operate a VPS, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos and playlists from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
Cost and operating trade-offs
A VPS workflow means paying for hosted compute and managing the encoder, playlist, credentials, and monitoring yourself. Re-encoding uses more compute than streamcopy; higher frame rates and demanding filters can add load. Since no universal VPS sizing or cost is established here, compare providers using the sustained CPU and upload performance your tested profile actually needs, not an assumed server tier. If you prefer a service built to keep uploaded YouTube videos playing without maintaining your own encoder, review StreamNeo’s current plans at StreamNeo pricing.
