How to Stream a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Playlist from a NAS

A NAS can store and serve your videos, but a compatible encoder must play the playlist and send the YouTube Live feed. Here are the setup, 4K60 settings, bandwidth checks, and NAS-specific caveats.

To stream a playlist of videos stored on a NAS to YouTube Live, use the NAS as storage and a separate encoder that can read and play those files. The encoder—not an ordinary NAS file path—creates the live feed and sends it to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube publishes settings for 4K/2160p at 60 fps, but achieving that output depends on the source files, encoder, and available upload bandwidth.

How the NAS-to-YouTube setup works

The basic signal path is:

NAS-stored videos → encoder that can play or queue them → YouTube Live ingestion → viewers

A NAS stores and serves the media. An encoder converts video into a digital stream and sends it to YouTube; YouTube’s encoder guide instructs creators to enter a server URL and stream key in that encoder. The reviewed YouTube documentation does not describe a feature that takes a NAS file path and broadcasts it as a playlist. Choose an encoder that can access the NAS files and handle the playlist behavior you need. YouTube’s encoder guide

Enable YouTube Live and prepare the stream

  1. Check eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned broadcast. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
  2. Create the stream in Live Control Room. Set the stream’s visibility to public, unlisted, or private as appropriate, then locate the stream URL and key. YouTube’s interface and scheduling options may change; follow the current controls shown for your channel. YouTube: Manage live stream settings
  3. Choose an encoder. It must be able to read the video files from your NAS, play or sequence them as required, encode the output, and send it to YouTube. The exact setup steps vary by encoder and version; verify playlist and repeat behavior in that product’s current documentation.
  4. Connect the encoder to YouTube. Enter the server URL and stream key in the encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS for standard ingestion. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.

Configure the encoder for 4K at 60 fps

YouTube’s published encoder settings list 4K/2160p at 60 fps with these bitrate recommendations: 10–40 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC, and 35 Mbps recommended for H.264. These are YouTube configuration recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular NAS, encoder, source file, or network can produce a stable 4K60 stream. YouTube’s settings permit frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube encoder settings

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Resolution and frame rate: Set the output to 2160p (4K) and 60 fps only if the source and encoder support those settings. A 4K label alone does not establish that the video is 60 fps.
  • Codec and bitrate: Select a codec supported by your encoder and stream configuration. Use YouTube’s published ranges above as guidance, then check the encoder’s output and YouTube stream health.
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Latency: YouTube says 4K streams do not offer the low-latency option and are set to normal latency.

Calculate the upload speed you need

The relevant network figure is the available upstream upload capacity where the encoder is connected—not the NAS’s advertised drive speed or the internet plan’s download speed. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the combined bitrate of the primary and backup streams. For example, a primary stream configured at 35 Mbps with no backup calls for at least 42 Mbps of available upload capacity under that recommendation; if you also send a backup stream, include its bitrate before adding the 20% margin.

Measure the actual upstream connection during the hours you expect to stream. Other devices and applications sharing the network can reduce the capacity available to the encoder. YouTube streaming tips

Choose SDR or HDR based on the source

Do not treat 4K resolution as an HDR setting. For standard SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit in its advanced settings. Live HDR requires a compatible HDR signal and encoder configuration; YouTube’s live HDR guidance specifies HEVC and a compatible 10-bit/HDR setup. Viewers without supported playback devices see SDR. The source material and encoder must both support the intended HDR output. YouTube encoder settings · YouTube HDR streaming guidance

Can a NAS broadcast a stored-video playlist directly?

Do not assume that a NAS feature for broadcasting cameras can play a queue of ordinary video files. For example, Synology Surveillance Station’s documented Live Broadcast workflow selects a camera, uses a YouTube RTMP path and key, and selects a stream profile. Its version 8 help page says that YouTube Live in this feature supports H.264. This is evidence of a camera-feed feature, not support for a stored-file playlist or 4K60 output. Before relying on any NAS’s built-in broadcast option, check the current documentation for your exact model and software version. Confirm the source type, codec, maximum resolution and frame rate, stream URL/key controls, and whether it can sequence and repeat stored files. A NAS may still serve the files to a separate encoder even when its own camera-broadcast feature is unsuitable.

Test the full chain before going live

  1. Confirm the encoder can reach and read every NAS file in the playlist.
  2. Check that the playlist transitions and repeats as intended, including what happens if a file is missing or unreadable.
  3. Start a private or unlisted test stream and preview it in YouTube Live Control Room before making a public broadcast.
  4. Verify the actual output resolution, frame rate, codec, keyframe interval, audio, and stream health in the encoder and Live Control Room.
  5. Test movement and audio similar to the planned program, and monitor the stream continuously for audio/video quality and connection issues.
  6. Check the final YouTube watch page on the playback devices your audience is likely to use. Confirm the selected privacy setting and that the stream has ended or continues as intended.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that the encoder has the correct server URL and stream key, that the stream is started in the encoder, and that the key has not been changed in Live Control Room.
  • The stream buffers or drops frames: Compare the encoder’s total primary and backup bitrate with measured upstream capacity, including YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Check for other traffic on the shared connection.
  • The stream is not actually 4K60: Verify the source file’s resolution and frame rate, the encoder’s output settings, and the received stream details. YouTube’s published targets cannot make a lower-resolution or lower-frame-rate source into native 4K60.
  • A playlist stops or skips: Check NAS access permissions and file availability, then inspect the encoder’s playlist and repeat settings. Playlist behavior depends on the encoder; it is not established by the NAS camera-broadcast documentation.
  • The NAS broadcast option rejects the stream: Confirm the feature’s supported camera/source type and codec for your model and installed software. The cited Synology version 8 feature documents H.264 camera streaming, not stored-video playlist output.
  • HDR appears as SDR: Verify that the source, encoder, and output are configured for compatible HEVC and 10-bit HDR. Viewers without supported playback hardware will see SDR.
  • You cannot start a first stream: Check verification and channel restrictions, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time live-streaming activation.
