Use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source to play your gaming highlights in order, then send the scene to YouTube Live with the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. For 4K at 60 frames per second, YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends 35 Mbps for H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval. Test a representative section before going live: your computer and upload connection must sustain the feed, and YouTube’s ingest settings do not guarantee that every viewer will receive a 4K60 version.
What you need before setting up the playlist
- OBS Studio and VLC: OBS’s VLC Video source plays a list of media files and requires VLC to be installed. Match their architecture: install 64-bit VLC if you use 64-bit OBS. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.
- Gaming highlights you can broadcast: Use video and audio you have the rights to stream. Having a copy of a game clip or music track does not by itself establish that you may broadcast it.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming: YouTube says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available. Check access ahead of your planned broadcast in YouTube’s live-stream encoder setup guidance.
- A stable upload connection and a computer that can run OBS: Requirements depend on the clips, codec, and system. YouTube does not establish one universal computer specification for this setup, so validate your own system with a representative test and Live Control Room stream-health checks.
Prepare the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and schedule a live stream if you want an upcoming watch page to promote. YouTube says scheduled streams may appear in subscribers’ feeds.
- Set the event’s title, description, visibility, and intended audience in Studio. Choose private or unlisted for a test when appropriate.
- Open the encoder setup for the event and copy the server URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, and enter the key or configure the server URL and key as required by the chosen service option. YouTube describes the stream key as the credential that lets an encoder send its feed; do not share it publicly.

Build and check the looping highlights playlist in OBS
- Install VLC in the same architecture as OBS, then open OBS and create or select a scene for the broadcast.
- In the scene’s Sources dock, select + and add VLC Video. Give the source a recognizable name.
- In the source properties, add the local highlight files in the intended playback order. Choose whether to loop the list; OBS documents looping as on and shuffling as off by default. Leave shuffle off if you want a predictable sequence.
- Arrange and size the source in the preview so the video fills the intended frame. Check that the source plays when visible, then play several clips and inspect their transitions.
- Set the source and desktop audio levels deliberately. Confirm that game audio is present, not clipping, and balanced across clips; mute any desktop or microphone inputs you do not intend to broadcast.
OBS describes the playlist capability this way: “Unlike Media Source, you can create a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.” The VLC source’s playlist controls and requirements are documented by the OBS Project.
Set OBS for 4K at 60 fps
In OBS, open Settings > Video and set both the base (canvas) and output resolution to 3840 × 2160, then set the common frame rate to 60 (or the equivalent 60 fps option). In Settings > Output, choose the streaming encoder and configure it to match YouTube’s ingest guidance:

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a guarantee of a particular viewer playback resolution. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for different devices and network conditions. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings before a production stream, since the guidance may change.
Choose a codec that fits your clips and setup
For a straightforward SDR gaming highlights playlist, H.264 is the uncomplicated choice when supported by your encoder. YouTube also lists AV1 and H.265 bitrate guidance, but the codec must be supported by your encoder and computer. Do not configure HDR simply because a stream is 4K: use HDR settings only when the footage and the encoding chain genuinely support HDR.

Check upload capacity with a real test
The selected video bitrate must be sustainable by the internet connection’s upload path, along with the rest of the stream. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate, but its guidance does not establish a universal headroom multiplier for every connection. Test the actual setup with representative clips and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators instead of relying on a generic speed-test result.
Test, start, and monitor the broadcast
- Use motion and audio representative of the full playlist. Fast gameplay can expose dropped frames or unstable encoding that a static menu will not.
- Start the encoder and check the incoming preview in YouTube Live Control Room before making the event public or starting the scheduled broadcast. Confirm the expected resolution, frame rate, picture, and audio.
- YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Use that time to resolve preview warnings and check stream health.
- While live, keep the Live Control Room open and monitor stream health and messages. If the feed degrades, check the encoder’s dropped frames and network status, then lower the bitrate or output settings if the connection cannot sustain the configured feed.

End the stream and understand the archive
Stop the stream from OBS when the playlist or event is finished, and confirm the broadcast has ended in YouTube Studio. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume an archive will be available for a broadcast that reaches or exceeds that duration.
