You can run FFmpeg on an OVHcloud VPS to send a continuous devotional video or audio feed to YouTube Live. The basic chain is media on the server, FFmpeg encoding or remuxing it, and YouTube ingesting the feed through an RTMPS address and stream key. Before choosing a VPS, check the workload against the plan’s actual CPU, memory, storage, and network terms; no particular OVHcloud tier is established as sufficient for every stream.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel eligible to go live. YouTube’s current guidance says the channel must be verified and have no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days; the minimum age to live stream is 16. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements before setup, since platform rules can change.
  • An OVHcloud VPS with capacity for the chosen encoding method, media files, and continuous outgoing stream. The hosting provider’s VPS contract index does not specify a suitable plan or prove that any tier meets this workload. Verify current regional availability, CPU, memory, storage, network terms, and price with OVHcloud.
  • Devotional media you have the rights to stream, plus a plan for protecting YouTube’s stream key and monitoring FFmpeg and the live event.

The server does not need to be a dedicated physical machine: in this setup, the VPS hosts the process. YouTube processes the incoming feed for viewers; the VPS’s job is to deliver a valid, continuous input to YouTube.

Choose the stream and server approach

Decide whether FFmpeg will transcode or copy

FFmpeg can either transcode source media into a selected output profile or pass through compatible audio and video streams without re-encoding (often called stream copy or remuxing). Transcoding gives you control over output settings but uses CPU; copying usually reduces encoding work but depends on the files’ codecs and container being compatible with YouTube and on the media joining into a workable continuous feed.

Inspect your actual media and test the proposed loop before building a 24/7 service around it. Loop continuity is not guaranteed by choosing either mode. This setup has no universal, tested FFmpeg command: the right options depend on your files, desired output, and server capacity.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Size the VPS around the real workload

Before selecting an OVHcloud plan, establish whether you will transcode in software, the resolution and frame rate, how many streams will run concurrently, how much space media and any separate recording need, and the expected sustained upload rate. Compare those needs with the plan’s current specifications and terms. Do not treat a plan name or a short successful test as proof of long-term capacity.

Create the YouTube Live event and protect its key

  1. In YouTube Studio, set up or select the live stream/event and confirm the channel is eligible to broadcast.
  2. In the encoder setup for that stream, copy the server URL and stream key YouTube provides. Use the event’s current values rather than an address or key copied from an old setup.
  3. Keep the stream key secret: treat it like a password. Do not put it in a public configuration file, a shared screenshot, a public repository, or logs that others can read. Store it in a suitably restricted environment or secret configuration.
  4. Configure FFmpeg to publish to the provided ingest address, then check YouTube Live Control Room to confirm the event receives the feed and is live. YouTube’s setup guidance says to stop sending content from the encoder to end a stream; use the controls appropriate to your event and verify its state in Live Control Room.

Use YouTube-compatible ingest settings

Prefer RTMPS for ordinary encoder delivery

YouTube recommends RTMPS for live encoder delivery because it encrypts the connection to Google’s servers. RTMPS is RTMP carried through SSL; Google’s ingest documentation requires an RTMPS scheme, a valid YouTube endpoint and application path, and port 443. Use the full server URL shown for your event. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and Google’s RTMPS ingestion documentation.

Match codec, bitrate, keyframes, and frame rate

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which must not exceed four seconds. Choose the resolution and bitrate from YouTube’s current encoder settings table and check that the VPS has enough sustained network capacity for the selected output; a single bitrate is not suitable for every resolution or plan.

Before broadcasting, test a representative section of the devotional content, including its audio and any movement or transitions. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the event rather than assuming that a process still running on the VPS means viewers are receiving a healthy feed.

Run FFmpeg as a service and plan for interruptions

A process can exit, a network connection can fail, or YouTube can stop receiving the feed. For a long-running broadcast, run FFmpeg under an operating-system service manager or supervisor that can detect an unexpected exit and restart the process. Add readable logs, health checks, alerts for disconnects, and disk-space alerts if you are recording locally. These are operational safeguards, not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback.

After a restart, check both FFmpeg’s logs and YouTube Live Control Room. A restarted encoder may not resume the same event seamlessly; confirm the event state and take the appropriate action in YouTube Studio. Do not expose the stream key in troubleshooting logs or notifications.

Make a separate plan for the replay archive

A 24-hour live feed is not a dependable way to create a complete YouTube replay. YouTube says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” A stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. The threshold concerns YouTube’s archive behavior, not whether a VPS can keep sending a live feed. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.

If preserving a replay matters, record it separately and test storage growth, file integrity, and retention on the server. Decide how recordings will be rotated or moved before disk space runs out. You may also choose shorter scheduled broadcasts to make archiving more practical, while accounting for the added work of restarting or scheduling each session.

Clear rights for devotional content before going live

You are responsible for having the necessary rights for everything in the stream: songs, recordings, performances, readings, artwork, and video. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the content provider to hold worldwide exploitation rights, including applicable music licensing rights. A work being religious, publicly available, purchased, or described as licensed does not by itself establish that your particular use, recording, territory, or live transmission is covered. Review the relevant permissions and YouTube’s terms.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can result in a placeholder image, warning, interruption, or termination. If you have a license, the rights owner may still need to allowlist your channel through Content ID to prevent an interruption. Read YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and resolve rights questions before relying on a continuous broadcast.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • YouTube receives no feed: Confirm FFmpeg is running, the event is active, and you copied the correct current server URL and stream key. Check the FFmpeg log for connection or authentication errors, and verify that the VPS can reach the RTMPS endpoint on port 443.
  • Stream health is poor or viewers report glitches: Check YouTube’s health indicators, the VPS’s sustained upload capacity, and whether the output bitrate is appropriate for the selected resolution. Confirm CBR and the keyframe interval settings against YouTube’s current guidance.
  • FFmpeg exits: Inspect the service logs for the failure cause, then use the supervisor to restart it. Confirm the YouTube event state afterward instead of assuming the broadcast resumed correctly.
  • The devotional replay is missing or incomplete: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived. Use a separate recording and validate its files and storage plan.
  • The stream is interrupted after a copyright match: Review YouTube’s notice, verify that every asset is covered for this use, and contact the rights holder about any necessary Content ID channel allowlisting.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want an alternative to managing an OVHcloud VPS and FFmpeg process yourself, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and is not a camera-based live feed. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
