Set up OBS with YouTube’s stream URL and key, start at modest output settings, and test the whole setup before relying on it. There is no universal laptop specification that guarantees uninterrupted 24/7 streaming.
What you need before you start
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.
- An encoder such as OBS, an uploaded or otherwise available video source, and the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room.
- A stable internet connection with measured upload capacity above the bitrate you choose.
- Enough local storage if you plan to record a backup while streaming.
YouTube does not specify a CPU, RAM, or GPU minimum that certifies an unspecified old laptop for continuous encoding. The result depends on the model’s condition, cooling, operating system, encoder settings, source content, and network. Treat a successful test on the actual machine—not its age or brand—as your evidence that the setup is viable.
Configure YouTube and OBS
- Confirm live access. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and confirm the channel can create a live stream. If live streaming is not enabled, follow YouTube’s prompts and allow for any activation delay.
- Create a stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream, and find its stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses these to route the encoder’s feed to your broadcast.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream. Do not publish it or include it in screenshots. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube or a custom RTMPS service as appropriate, and enter the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Labels can vary by OBS version; use the values YouTube displays for that stream.
- Choose a conservative output to begin. In OBS, open Settings > Video and choose a resolution and frame rate the laptop can plausibly handle. Open Settings > Output and set the encoder and bitrate. Start modestly, then raise quality only after a representative test shows the laptop and connection can sustain it.
- Check the preview before going public. Start streaming from OBS and look at the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Confirm that the picture, audio, and intended video source are correct before making the broadcast public or sharing it.
YouTube’s current guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds). For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video encoding, with AAC or MP3 audio. Use the settings supported by your chosen OBS encoder; do not assume every codec is available on an older laptop. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance.
Choose a bitrate and resolution the laptop can sustain
The following are selected H.264 ingest figures from YouTube’s encoder guidance, checked in 2026. They describe YouTube’s recommended input ranges, not a guarantee that an old laptop can encode at that quality or that a connection can sustain it.

These figures are specifically from YouTube’s H.264 column. H.265 and AV1 have separate guidance, so do not apply these H.264 values to those codecs. Measure actual upload capacity and leave headroom rather than setting the stream bitrate at the very limit of a speed-test result. A connection that varies during the day may fail at a rate it briefly reaches in a test.
- If OBS reports encoding overload or dropped frames caused by encoding, lower the output resolution or frame rate, or choose a less demanding encoder setting available on the laptop.
- If OBS or Live Control Room indicates network instability, reduce bitrate and check whether other devices or uploads are consuming bandwidth.
- Use representative movement and audio when testing: a static screen alone may not reveal problems with the actual content.
Test the old laptop before depending on it
- Set up the same video, audio, OBS scene, encoder, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate you intend to use for the real channel.
- Run a private or unlisted test stream and check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. YouTube advises testing before starting a live stream and continuously monitoring audio and video quality.
- Watch OBS for encoding overload and dropped frames, and listen for audio interruptions. Check whether the laptop stays responsive and whether its cooling can cope during extended operation.
- If recording a local backup in OBS, confirm that the recording file grows during the test and that the laptop has enough free storage for the intended recording period.
- Repeat the test for a substantial period under the conditions you expect during the real broadcast. YouTube does not define a test duration that proves 24/7 stability, so no short test can certify continuous operation.
Keep the laptop powered and positioned so its vents are not blocked. These are practical precautions, not a YouTube-certified power or temperature specification. For an always-on channel, plan to check both the computer and broadcast; an unattended laptop can still lose power, disconnect, or stop encoding.

Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive and DVR caveats
A live broadcast can remain live while its replay and rewind behavior are limited. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. For very long streams, DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance and its DVR guidance.
If a replay matters, end the broadcast and start a new session before it reaches 12 hours, and record locally as a backup. This is a cautious way to manage YouTube’s stated limits, not a promise that every shorter stream will be archived. Check that the local file is actually being written and has enough storage; a backup recording is useful only if it is intact and accessible.

Keep a 24/7 channel copyright-safe and sustainable
Only stream videos and audio you have the rights or permission to use. A video being publicly available on YouTube does not by itself give you permission to rebroadcast it. Check licenses for the complete work, including music, images, footage, and any third-party material. YouTube’s live-streaming policies and copyright enforcement apply to live broadcasts as well as uploaded videos; review YouTube’s copyright guidance and the applicable Community Guidelines.
Also distinguish permission to stream from eligibility to earn revenue. Repeating material you do not own or adding little original value can create copyright and monetization problems. A continuous schedule does not make reused material yours or guarantee that a channel will qualify for monetization. Keep records of licenses and permissions, and make the channel’s original contribution clear.

Troubleshoot common failures

Do-it-yourself costs and trade-offs
Using an existing laptop and streaming software avoids buying a dedicated streaming computer, but it does not eliminate the practical costs of running hardware continuously: electricity, wear, cooling, network use, and the time needed to monitor and recover the stream. YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe an external drive, but local recording requires adequate storage. An external SSD is one possible way to add space if the laptop is short on capacity; it is a storage option, not a fix for a stream outage.
Choose the DIY approach when you can test and monitor the laptop and are comfortable restarting a failed broadcast. If uninterrupted operation matters more than keeping the encoder on a local machine, a cloud service is another approach.
