You can use a Raspberry Pi to loop a prerecorded university course and send it to YouTube Live, but no official documentation certifies a particular Pi setup for uninterrupted 24/7 streaming. Prepare the file, configure playback and YouTube ingest, and run an extended test of the actual Pi, power supply, network, and recovery process before relying on it. This guide uses YouTube as the worked example; a university network or another platform may require a different ingest and access-control setup.

Before you stream: confirm destination, access, and permission

Choose who should be able to watch

Decide whether the course should be public, unlisted, private on a platform, or available only through a university network. YouTube instructions below apply to an encoder stream sent to YouTube Live; they do not establish how to configure another platform or a university’s internal streaming service.

Check the course rights and institutional rules

Before broadcasting, confirm that you have permission to stream the course recording and its audio to the intended audience. A platform’s general rules do not determine whether a particular lecture, slides, music, guest appearance, or other material is cleared. YouTube says, “All content in live streams must adhere to our Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.” (YouTube live-streaming setup.)

Prepare the Raspberry Pi as a headless streaming host

Install Raspberry Pi OS and provide boot storage

A headless Pi still needs boot media, power, and a network connection. Raspberry Pi’s current getting-started documentation recommends at least 8 GB of boot storage for Raspberry Pi OS Lite, which is command-line-only; desktop editions have a recommended minimum of 32 GB. These recommendations are for the operating system, not for the course video. Check the recording’s actual file size and leave enough additional space if you plan to store it on the Pi.

Use the Raspberry Pi getting-started guide for the current headless setup steps: Raspberry Pi getting started.

Match the power supply to the Pi model

Raspberry Pi’s current guide recommends a 27 W USB-C supply for Raspberry Pi 5 and a 15 W USB-C supply for Raspberry Pi 4 Model B and Raspberry Pi 400. Do not treat one supply as suitable for every generation. Peripherals increase power demand, and voltage loss in removable power cables can matter. Raspberry Pi’s documentation advises: “We recommend using an official Raspberry Pi power supply suitable for the Raspberry Pi model you’re powering.”

Plan for network and thermal conditions

Use a network connection that can sustain the stream’s upload bitrate with headroom. A bitrate recommendation from YouTube is not proof that a particular home connection can maintain that rate continuously. Keep the Pi in a ventilated location and test it under the workload you intend to use; the cited documentation does not certify 24/7 operation for a specific Pi, recording, and network combination.

Prepare the course recording and choose a playback method

Check the file before configuring the stream

Confirm that the recording plays correctly from beginning to end, has the intended audio, and is stored where the Pi can access it. A prepared file that can be sent through without re-encoding is a sensible first experiment, but the available documentation does not establish which Pi model can pass through or encode every file format at a given resolution and frame rate.

Use VLC or FFmpeg to play and loop

Raspberry Pi OS includes VLC and Raspberry Pi documents hardware-accelerated playback. That makes VLC a plausible playback route, not proof of end-to-end streaming performance. For a command-line test, FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 to loop an input indefinitely. For example, this plays a local file repeatedly to a display for a basic playback check:

ffplay -stream_loop -1 /home/pi/course.mp4

This is a playback check, not a complete YouTube streaming command. The appropriate encoder and output settings depend on the destination, the recording’s format, and what the Pi can sustain. FFmpeg’s official manual documents the loop option: FFmpeg documentation.

Configure YouTube Live for an encoder stream

Meet YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements

YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Live content must follow the platform’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Review the current requirements and live setup guidance before scheduling a course stream: YouTube live-streaming setup.

Choose the ingest protocol and stream key carefully

YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream, then copy the server URL and stream key provided for that stream into the encoder configuration. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your broadcast. Do not publish it in a command transcript, screenshot, or public repository; regenerate it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.

Set output format and bitrate for the intended resolution

YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 as supported video codecs. Its recommended H.264 bitrates include 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 42 Mbps for 4K at 30 fps. These are platform recommendations, not universal connection-speed requirements or a guarantee that the Pi can encode that output. Select a resolution and frame rate the Pi and source can sustain, and make sure the upload connection has headroom beyond the video bitrate for audio and network variation.

Use the recommended encoder behavior

  • Set the encoder to constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
  • Set keyframe frequency to two seconds; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Use AAC or MP3 audio as listed in YouTube’s encoder guidance.
  • YouTube supports frame rates up to 60 fps; choose one supported by the source and tested Pi output.

These settings are YouTube guidance for encoder streams; they are not evidence that a particular Raspberry Pi can produce them reliably around the clock. See YouTube recommended encoder settings for current requirements and resolution-specific guidance.

Make the stream recoverable, then test it for longer than a quick preview

Configure startup and restart behavior

Set up the player and encoder so they can start after a reboot, and inspect their logs when they fail. A process manager can restart a crashed process, but restarting software is not the same as guaranteed recovery: the stream may still fail because of lost connectivity, a stale stream key, an encoder error, power loss, or a platform-side interruption.

Run a controlled reliability test

  1. Start the exact course recording and stream settings you plan to use, and confirm YouTube receives a healthy preview.
  2. Reboot the Pi and verify that the required services start without a monitor or manual login.
  3. Interrupt the network during a controlled test, restore it, and check whether the encoder reconnects and YouTube receives the stream again.
  4. Review player and encoder logs for repeated errors, dropped connections, or resource problems.
  5. Keep the test running long enough to expose issues that a short preview will miss, while monitoring power, temperature, storage, and upload stability.

No independent benchmark in the cited documentation establishes 24/7 uptime for a specific Raspberry Pi and course-file workload. Treat continuous operation as an engineering target that needs testing and an operational recovery plan, not as a property guaranteed by the hardware or playback software.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Possible cause What to check
YouTube does not receive a stream Wrong ingest URL or stream key, an encoder that has not started, or an eligibility issue Confirm the current server URL and key in YouTube Studio, check encoder logs, and verify channel eligibility.
The stream connects but buffers or drops Upload capacity is insufficient or unstable for the chosen bitrate Check sustained upload performance and lower the output bitrate or resolution to a setting the connection and Pi can maintain.
Playback works, but the stream encoder fails The Pi cannot sustain the selected output format, resolution, or frame rate Test the exact media and encoder settings; try a lower output target or a file format that can be passed through, if supported by your setup.
The video stops after reboot or a process failure Startup or restart behavior is not configured, or a dependency is unavailable Check service configuration and logs, then repeat the reboot and recovery tests before relying on the stream.
The Pi loses power or behaves unpredictably Supply is mismatched to the model, peripherals increase demand, or the cable causes voltage loss Use the model-appropriate supply and inspect the cable and connected peripherals.
A stream key may have been exposed The key was copied into public text, a screenshot, or a shared configuration Regenerate the key in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the replacement.

Or let it run in the cloud
