You can loop a prerecorded lake video on YouTube Live from a Raspberry Pi by having FFmpeg send the file to YouTube’s ingest server, then supervising FFmpeg so it can restart if it exits. The Pi is an encoder and network source—not just a place to upload a video. Before leaving it unattended, confirm you have the rights to the video and audio, test the actual Pi and upload connection at your chosen settings, and arrange a separate recording if you need a complete archive.

What you need before you start

  • A Raspberry Pi running Linux, a reliable power supply, and a stable internet connection. Ethernet is preferable where available, but the connection must be tested at the location and bitrate you intend to use.
  • A lake video and ambience audio that you have permission to broadcast. Check the rights for both the footage and sound, including any music, recordings, or third-party clips; a file being available online does not make it cleared for a 24/7 stream.
  • An FFmpeg build that can read your media file and produce an encoder feed YouTube accepts. The exact capabilities depend on the build and the Pi; do not assume a particular board can transcode every resolution indefinitely.
  • A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and no applicable live-streaming restriction. YouTube’s current setup guidance says creators must be at least 16 and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days; check your own account in YouTube Studio because eligibility and rules can change (YouTube live-stream setup).

A Raspberry Pi 5 is a current Pi model, but its official product page does not establish that it can sustain every YouTube resolution or frame rate around the clock. Treat model selection as a configuration question: test the specific input file, FFmpeg build, output settings, cooling, power, and network together rather than relying on a resolution promise (Raspberry Pi 5 product page).

Choose whether FFmpeg must encode the video

Use already encoded media when possible

If the file already uses codecs and parameters suitable for your chosen YouTube output, a workflow that passes the audio and video through without re-encoding can reduce the Pi’s processing load. Whether this works depends on the file, FFmpeg build, and YouTube-compatible output; inspect the file and verify the resulting feed in a private or unlisted test before relying on it.

Transcode only after testing the target settings

If the source needs a different codec, resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, FFmpeg must encode it. That adds sustained CPU or hardware-encoder demand and heat. A higher output resolution is not automatically better if the Pi cannot encode it continuously or the connection cannot deliver it reliably. The available evidence does not establish a guaranteed 24/7 resolution for any Pi model, so test the exact configuration over a representative period.

Set YouTube’s ingest and encoder profile

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the live-stream setup or Live Control Room. Create or configure the live stream, then copy the ingest server URL and stream key/name shown for it. YouTube’s LiveStreams API describes the ingestion address and stream-name fields (LiveStreams API).
  2. Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not put it in a public script, repository, screenshot, or support post.
  3. Choose an ingest protocol supported by your setup. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport and lists RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps. Confirm that your FFmpeg build and output actually support the codec and protocol you select (YouTube encoder guidance).
  4. Use constant bitrate encoding, and set a two-second keyframe interval where your encoder allows it. YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
  5. Start with a profile the Pi and connection can sustain. For H.264, YouTube’s current recommendations are 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3 Mbps for 720p30. These are recommended video bitrates, not guaranteed minimum internet speeds. You need stable upload headroom beyond the stream bitrate; measure the connection during the hours it will run and leave margin for normal fluctuations.
  6. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Include audio in the output even if the ambience is subtle, and verify it reaches YouTube: absent audio is one of the reported stream-health issues.

Check YouTube’s current settings table before going live; platform recommendations can change. YouTube recommends running a representative preflight with the actual audio and movement, measuring upload speed, and monitoring stream health rather than assuming a speed-test result alone proves the setup is stable.

Loop the local file with FFmpeg

FFmpeg’s -stream_loop option can repeat an input file. A common starting pattern is to place the looping option before the input and send the encoded output to YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key. The exact command depends on the FFmpeg version, input codecs, chosen output profile, and whether you are passing through or transcoding. This article does not prescribe a tested command for an unspecified Pi, file, or FFmpeg build: use the options supported by your installed version, then validate the feed in YouTube before making it public. A third-party FFmpeg guide describes the looping approach, but it is not an official YouTube recipe (Streamloop FFmpeg looping guide).

At a minimum, your FFmpeg configuration needs to repeat the source file, provide the intended audio and video streams, apply a stable bitrate and keyframe interval when encoding, and publish to the correct YouTube ingest address with the private key. Avoid copying a command blindly: a key or URL in a shell history, service file, or log may expose the stream credentials.

Make unattended operation recoverable

Run FFmpeg under a supervisor

A looping input does not itself keep a service alive if FFmpeg crashes, the network fails, or the Pi reboots. Use a process supervisor such as systemd to start the encoder at boot and restart it after an unexpected exit. A public Raspberry Pi-class example combines headless FFmpeg with systemd, but it is an implementation example—not an official YouTube configuration or a guarantee that every setup will recover correctly (YouTube AutoEncoder project).

Keep logs and test recovery

Write FFmpeg output to a log you can inspect, and configure log retention so continuous operation does not fill the storage. Test a deliberate process restart and a Pi reboot while monitoring YouTube Studio. Confirm that the supervisor starts the process, that YouTube receives the feed again, and that the stream behaves as intended after reconnection. YouTube can drop an ingest connection; local restart behavior and YouTube’s stream state both need checking.

Plan for power, heat, storage, and network interruption

Use reliable power and adequate cooling for the Pi’s actual workload. Wired networking, a suitable case or cooling arrangement, and a UPS may help in a particular installation, but they are conditional reliability choices, not universal requirements. Store the operating system and media on suitable local storage; use a separate drive if you plan local recording. Required capacity depends on file size, recording bitrate, and how long you retain recordings.

Preflight the stream and watch YouTube’s health status

  1. Run the complete loop-and-encoder setup with the intended media and target settings before announcing the broadcast.
  2. Confirm that YouTube shows a received video and audio feed and that the picture, sound, and loop transition are acceptable.
  3. Monitor the stream-health indicators and resolve warnings before leaving the setup unattended. The LiveStreams API documents issues including low bitrate, unsupported codec, missing audio, keyframe intervals over four seconds, and video ingestion starvation; starvation can cause buffering (LiveStreams API health documentation).
  4. Inspect local FFmpeg logs alongside YouTube diagnostics. A healthy local process does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed, and a Studio warning may point to an ingest or configuration problem rather than a stopped process.
  5. Check the stream again after a restart, network interruption, and reboot. Do not treat a successful short test as proof that the same setup will run indefinitely.

Protect the archive separately

YouTube says it can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous 24/7 broadcast therefore should not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive as the only copy. If preserving the complete lake ambience program matters, record locally or use another recording plan with enough storage and a retention process. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup (YouTube archive guidance).

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause to check What to do
YouTube receives no video Incorrect ingest URL or stream key, FFmpeg output failure, or unsupported output configuration. Check the URL and key in the Live Control Room, protect and re-enter the credentials if needed, inspect FFmpeg logs, and confirm YouTube’s ingest status.
Buffering or unstable picture Low or fluctuating upload bitrate, or video ingestion starvation. Check YouTube stream health and local network conditions. Reduce the output bitrate or resolution to a profile the connection can sustain, then repeat the preflight.
Low-bitrate warning The feed is arriving below the intended or recommended rate. Compare encoder output with the selected profile, check network stability, and verify that constant bitrate settings are applied as intended.
Video works but audio is absent The file has no usable audio stream, FFmpeg is not mapping or encoding audio, or the output configuration omits it. Inspect the source and FFmpeg logs, ensure an audio stream is sent, and confirm the received audio in YouTube’s preview and health status.
Unsupported codec or keyframe warning The selected codec is not accepted by the current setup, or the GOP/keyframe interval exceeds YouTube’s guidance. Use an encoder format supported by your FFmpeg build and current YouTube ingest guidance; target a two-second keyframe interval and do not exceed four seconds.
Stream stops after a process exit FFmpeg is not supervised, restart behavior is misconfigured, or the failure is not being logged. Check the systemd service state and logs, verify its restart policy, and test recovery by restarting the service and rebooting the Pi.
The stream runs but the full day is missing from archives YouTube’s automatic archive may not capture streams exceeding 12 hours. Use a separate local recording and retention plan if a complete archive is required.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you would rather not maintain a Pi, FFmpeg process, home power, and network connection, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload the lake recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera.
