To stream a 1080p video loop continuously from a Linode VPS, run an encoder on the server, connect it to the YouTube Live ingest URL and stream key, and keep the source and server online for the planned runtime. Use H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p30 or 12 Mbps for 1080p60; your VPS must sustain the full outgoing bitrate, and your Linode account’s current transfer allowance must cover the stream’s duration.
This guide covers the setup decisions, YouTube settings, transfer budgeting, and testing. It does not provide a copy-and-paste FFmpeg command: a correct loop-and-reconnect command depends on the FFmpeg build, source file, and ingest endpoint, and a command that has not been checked against those details could fail during a continuous stream.
Choose 1080p30 or 1080p60
“1080p” specifies the picture dimensions, not the frame rate or bitrate. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264 at 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. These are recommended ingest settings, not a promise that a particular VPS can sustain the stream.
| Target | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | A lower frame rate may suit a static or slow-moving documentary loop; that is a content choice, not a YouTube requirement. |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | Choose it when smoother motion is important and the server and network have sufficient headroom. |
Use the source’s intended frame rate where practical. A still image or slowly changing scene may not benefit visibly from 60 fps, while motion-heavy footage may. YouTube’s recommendations are listed in its live encoder settings.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Create a YouTube stream and secure its key
- Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream, following the current prompts for your channel.
- Select an existing stream key or create one, then copy the ingest URL and key shown for that stream. Use the actual URL supplied in Live Control Room rather than relying on an endpoint copied from an old guide.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: do not publish it in a script, screenshot, repository, or support post. YouTube documents reusing a custom key and resetting a key if it is compromised in its stream settings guidance.
- Use the RTMPS URL when your encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and recommends it for encrypted ingestion; use ordinary RTMP only if your chosen encoder or setup cannot use RTMPS and you understand the transport-security trade-off. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
Configure the VPS encoder
Install and run an encoder on the Linode VPS that can read the video file, repeat it, and publish to the ingest URL. Exact installation steps vary by operating system and FFmpeg build. Before leaving the stream unattended, verify that the selected encoder can loop the particular file and recover appropriately from a dropped connection.
Set the output parameters
- Video codec: H.264.
- Rate control: CBR, or constant bitrate.
- Bitrate: 10 Mbps for 1080p30 or 12 Mbps for 1080p60, following YouTube’s recommendation.
- Keyframes: every two seconds; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Transport: RTMPS when supported, using the current ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
These settings follow YouTube’s encoder specifications. Confirm the output resolution and frame rate match the target you selected. An encoder’s displayed video bitrate may not represent the whole network load: audio and transport overhead also use bandwidth, so allow headroom rather than sizing the server to the video figure alone.

Keep credentials and the process manageable
Do not embed a real stream key in a public command example or shared configuration. Store it in a private configuration or secret-management method appropriate to your server, restrict access to that file, and avoid exposing it in logs. Arrange for the encoder to remain running for the intended period and decide how you will be notified if it exits. The specific service manager and restart policy depend on the VPS operating system and encoder setup.
Check Linode bandwidth and transfer before running 24/7
A continuous stream consumes outbound traffic for as long as it runs. Before choosing a Linode configuration, compare the encoder’s actual total outgoing bitrate with the instance’s available outbound throughput, then estimate monthly transfer at your planned uptime. Available throughput must exceed the total stream bitrate; YouTube also advises checking that upload bandwidth is sufficient. Its streaming guidance recommends testing and monitoring stream health.

Check the current Linode account billing and network-transfer terms for the specific account and server before relying on a monthly allowance. Current plan transfer limits, prices, and per-instance throughput are not established here, so no particular plan or overage cost can be recommended. An older Linode community discussion addresses the same concern about a 24/7 YouTube stream and monthly transfer, but its example quotas and prices should not be treated as current: Linode Community.
Test the stream before relying on it
- Start with a private or unlisted test stream in Live Control Room.
- Use representative footage and audio, including the movement and sound present in the planned loop.
- Check YouTube’s preview, received resolution and frame rate, and stream-health indicators. Watch for dropped frames, interruptions, or an unexpected output setting.
- Observe the stream long enough to see whether the loop repeats as intended and whether the encoder remains connected. Check the VPS process and network use as well as YouTube’s status.
- Only move to the intended audience and runtime after the test is stable. Continue monitoring stream health during operation.
YouTube recommends testing before the event and monitoring stream health; see its live streaming tips.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Ingest URL, stream key, encoder connection, or RTMPS compatibility | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, check for whitespace or transcription errors, and confirm the encoder supports the selected transport. |
| Stream health reports dropped frames | Insufficient or inconsistent outbound bandwidth, or a bitrate too close to available capacity | Check total outgoing bitrate and VPS network conditions. Reduce the target frame rate or bitrate if necessary, then test again against YouTube’s recommendations and available bandwidth. |
| Received quality differs from the intended 1080p target | Encoder output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate configuration | Verify the encoder’s actual output and compare it with the selected 1080p30 or 1080p60 target in Live Control Room. |
| The stream stops when the encoder exits or disconnects | Process supervision, VPS connectivity, or reconnection behavior | Check the encoder logs and server status, then test the restart and reconnect behavior before another unattended run. |
| Transfer use is higher than expected | Actual runtime, total bitrate including audio and overhead, or repeated operation | Review server traffic and planned uptime, then compare them with the current transfer terms shown in your Linode account. |
