Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To stream a prerecorded 4K file to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, create a YouTube live event, copy its stream URL and key, then send the file at real-time speed using FFmpeg’s -re input option. For H.264, YouTube recommends 42 Mbps at 4K/2160p 30 fps or 50 Mbps at 60 fps, with a two-second keyframe interval. Treat the command below as a template: check your file, FFmpeg build, upload capacity, and YouTube’s live preview before relying on it.
Before you start
You need a 4K video file, an FFmpeg build with the encoder and audio support you plan to use, a YouTube channel eligible to create a live stream, and an internet connection with enough stable upload capacity for your chosen bitrate. The source file and local system have not been inspected here, so confirm its dimensions, frame rate, audio tracks, and color format before choosing settings.
- Decide whether to output 30 or 60 fps. Prefer the source frame rate unless you have a reason to convert it.
- Check that the installed FFmpeg includes the intended encoder, such as
libx264, and AAC support. Encoder availability depends on how FFmpeg was built. - Measure upload speed and leave headroom for fluctuations. A connection that only just matches the video bitrate is not a safe assumption.
- Plan a test broadcast with audio and motion similar to the program you intend to stream.
Choose the 4K bitrate and stream format
YouTube’s live-ingest recommendations depend on both codec and frame rate. The figures below are for live ingestion, not for exporting a file to upload as a regular YouTube video. YouTube’s live encoder settings page lists these 4K/2160p video bitrate values (accessed 2026).
| Codec | Frame rate | Minimum video bitrate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 30 fps | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| H.264 | 60 fps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 60 fps | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection, encoder, or playback device will deliver the same result. H.264 with AAC is a compatibility-focused choice for an SDR template; YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 as video ingest codecs, up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends CBR for bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, with an interval no longer than four seconds.

For stereo audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3, 128 kbps, and 44.1 kHz. Its advanced guidance lists 384 kbps and 48 kHz for 5.1 audio; 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only for AAC. SDR guidance specifies Rec. 709 and 8-bit color. For HDR, YouTube recommends 10-bit H.265/HEVC and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Confirm your encoder and transport support the intended workflow; do not assume a compatibility-oriented SDR command preserves HDR.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. The example below uses the RTMP-shaped destination shown in FFmpeg’s documentation as a syntax illustration. Use the exact server URL and protocol shown in YouTube Live Control Room, and choose RTMPS when it is offered and supported by your setup.

Create a YouTube live event and protect the key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream for your broadcast.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that event or stream. YouTube’s setup guidance is at YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Keep the key secret. Treat it like a password: do not put it in a public script, screenshot, shared log, or repository. If exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s live settings.
- Check the stream’s resolution and frame-rate behavior in Live Control Room. YouTube normally detects resolution and frame rate; a custom stream key can provide manual selection options.
Send the file with FFmpeg
This command is a template assembled from YouTube’s published ingest guidance and FFmpeg’s official RTMP example, not a tested recipe for every file or machine. Replace the filename and destination, confirm encoder support, and check the source properties first. The placeholder key is deliberately not a real credential.
ffmpeg -re -i "input.mp4"
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-b:v 42M -maxrate 42M -bufsize 84M
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
FFmpeg’s -re option paces a file input at its native rate instead of processing it as fast as possible. The -g 60 setting at 30 fps makes a 60-frame GOP, or two seconds; -keyint_min 60 and -sc_threshold 0 are included to keep that interval predictable. The -b:v and -maxrate values reflect the H.264 30 fps recommendation, while -bufsize is an encoder rate-control setting, not a guarantee of network buffering or reliability.

Adjust for 60 fps
If you are outputting 60 fps, change -r 30 to -r 60, set -g 120 and -keyint_min 120 for a two-second GOP, and use YouTube’s 50 Mbps H.264 recommendation for 4K/2160p 60 fps. Make sure the measured upload connection can sustain that video rate with room for variation. Avoid frame-rate conversion unless needed.
Adjust stream mapping and output format deliberately
-map 0:v:0selects the first video stream.-map 0:a:0?selects the first audio stream only if one exists. If the file has multiple audio tracks or no audio, change the mapping intentionally rather than assuming this example is appropriate.- The template’s
yuv420ppixel format and H.264 settings target a straightforward SDR workflow. For HDR, verify the source color metadata, encoder, and YouTube settings; this command should not be treated as an HDR-preserving pipeline. - The
veryfastpreset favors encoding speed over compression efficiency. Whether a machine can encode 4K in real time depends on its hardware and FFmpeg build; no hardware benchmark is implied. - Do not paste a real stream key into a command that will be saved in shell history or captured in logs. Use a method appropriate to your system for keeping credentials private, and inspect scripts before sharing them.
See the official FFmpeg format documentation for RTMP for its realtime-pacing example and muxer options.

Test before the broadcast
- Run a safe test stream, such as an unlisted event, with representative audio and motion. YouTube’s encoder guidance explicitly says, “Make sure that you test before you start your live stream.” See YouTube Help: Recommended encoder settings for live streaming.
- Check Live Control Room for the detected resolution, frame rate, stream health, and any encoder or platform messages. Confirm that the video is 4K/2160p as intended; playback availability and processing can vary.
- Listen to the audio and inspect motion, not just a static frame. Watch the connection and encoder load throughout the test.
- If YouTube detects the wrong resolution or frame rate, compare the actual encoded output with the selected stream settings. Check custom-key or manual-resolution options before changing multiple settings at once.
Troubleshoot common failures
The stream is not detected or will not connect
- Recheck that FFmpeg is sending to the exact server URL and stream key from Live Control Room, with no missing characters or stale key.
- Confirm the selected protocol and destination match what YouTube displays. Prefer the offered RTMPS endpoint where supported.
- Check that FFmpeg reports the requested video and audio encoders are available in this build, and review its error output without exposing the stream key.
The stream buffers, drops frames, or stalls
- Measure upload capacity again and compare it with the chosen video bitrate. Leave headroom for network variation and other household or office traffic.
- Check whether the computer can encode the selected resolution and frame rate in real time. Reduce the encoding workload or choose a lower supported stream target if the encoder cannot keep pace.
- Change one variable at a time, then repeat the test and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages.
The output is not 4K or the frame rate is wrong
- Inspect the source file and the actual FFmpeg output settings, then compare them with the resolution and frame-rate selection in Live Control Room.
- Check whether the stream key uses automatic detection or custom/manual settings. Do not infer that a 4K source alone guarantees a 4K live output.
- Allow for platform processing and playback availability to vary; verify the ingest status and output properties rather than assuming immediate 4K playback.
There is no audio or the wrong track plays
- Check that the file contains an audio stream and that FFmpeg maps the intended track. The optional map in the template only selects the first audio stream, if present.
- Verify AAC encoder availability and confirm that audio is audible in the test stream.
- For surround audio, follow YouTube’s advanced channel-count, sample-rate, and codec guidance rather than using the stereo example unchanged.
A brief connection failure ends the stream
FFmpeg’s documentation describes an optional FIFO muxer with recovery attempts for temporary network failures. Its generic example is not a YouTube reliability guarantee; first confirm that your build supports the FIFO muxer and test recovery behavior safely. A recovery option does not replace a stable connection or YouTube-side diagnostics.
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f fifo -fifo_format flv
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
-map 0:v -map 0:a rtmp://example.com/live/stream_name
This is FFmpeg’s generic documentation example, not a ready-to-run YouTube command. Consult the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation and adapt only after confirming support and testing.

Latency and copyright considerations
YouTube’s low-latency optimization is unavailable for 4K/2160p streams; YouTube sets them to normal latency. If your program depends on near-real-time audience interaction, factor that limitation into the event format.
Having permission to play a recording is separate from the technical ability to stream it. Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights needed for the video, music, and other included material, and review YouTube’s live-stream rules. A copyright issue or reused-content concern cannot be fixed by changing FFmpeg bitrate or keyframe settings.
Or let it run in the cloud
FFmpeg is a do-it-yourself option when you want to encode and operate the stream locally. If you want a prerecorded YouTube stream to keep running without leaving a computer on, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month.
