You can stream 4K at 60 frames per second from a Windows 11 PC to YouTube Live with OBS, provided your PC has an encoder that supports the chosen codec and your internet connection can sustain the upload. In OBS, select YouTube RTMPS, 3840 × 2160 output at 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval. Start at YouTube’s recommended video bitrate: 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC, or 50 Mbps for H.264. Those figures are video ingestion bitrates—not recommended broadband plan speeds—so test your actual PC and connection before going live.

What you need before streaming

  • A Windows 11 PC with a hardware encoder that supports your selected codec at 3840 Ă— 2160 and 60 fps. OBS only offers encoders supported by the device; Windows 11 alone does not guarantee 4K/60 encoding capability.
  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
  • OBS or another compatible encoder. YouTube lists OBS as a free, open-source encoder.
  • A sustained, reliable upload connection. Its suitability depends on your provider, plan, local network and time of day; there is no single upload-speed figure that guarantees 4K/60 streaming across India.

Choose the 4K/60 settings

YouTube Help’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends the following video bitrates for 4K/2160p at 60 fps. The minimums are platform ingestion minimums, not sensible targets for a stream that needs headroom against connection variation.

Video codec YouTube-recommended video bitrate YouTube-listed minimum
AV1 35 Mbps 10 Mbps
H.265/HEVC 35 Mbps 10 Mbps
H.264 50 Mbps 14 Mbps

These are video bitrates, not ISP plan rates. Your upload connection needs additional capacity for audio, protocol overhead and ordinary fluctuations. YouTube advises selecting a quality your connection can reliably handle and testing the upload; do not treat the published minimum as a recommended broadband speed. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for its current values.

  • Protocol: RTMPS is recommended by YouTube; it is the encrypted extension of RTMP.
  • Rate control: Constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Keyframes: 2-second interval recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Frame rate: Up to 60 fps.
  • SDR color: Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3; YouTube recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio.

Set up OBS and YouTube Live

  1. Enable live streaming on YouTube. Complete channel activation before your planned broadcast; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  2. Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Find the stream key in the stream settings. YouTube describes the key as the stream’s password and address; keep it private. Its stream settings guidance explains how to manage it.
  3. Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube RTMPS if offered, and enter or select the stream key. OBS interface options can vary by version and available integrations; use YouTube’s current RTMPS server details if configuring a custom service. Never show the key in a recording or share it publicly.
  4. Set the output resolution and frame rate. In OBS, open Settings > Video. Set the output resolution to 3840 Ă— 2160 and the common FPS value to 60. If your source video is not 4K/60, outputting at 4K/60 does not create detail or motion information that is absent from the source.
  5. Configure the encoder. Open Settings > Output, use the Advanced output mode if required to expose encoder controls, and select a supported hardware encoder. Set rate control to CBR, keyframe interval to 2 seconds, and bitrate to 35 Mbps for AV1 or HEVC, or 50 Mbps for H.264, assuming the chosen PC encoder supports the codec and setting. YouTube’s recommendations are described at its encoder settings page.
  6. Set audio and SDR color. Keep the stream on the SDR Rec. 709, 8-bit path unless you have a complete HDR source and compatible hardware. Use AAC or MP3 audio; 128 Kbps stereo is YouTube’s recommendation.
  7. Start a test and check stream health. Start streaming in OBS, then inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages before making the broadcast public or beginning the event. Test with audio and movement similar to the real program. YouTube Help specifically advises that tests include audio and video movement like the planned stream.
  8. Confirm the setup at the actual location and time. Run a sustained upload test over the connection you will use for the event, then repeat a full OBS test with the intended content. A Cat6 Ethernet cable is an optional way to test a wired PC-to-router path if both devices have suitable ports; it cannot increase your ISP plan rate or guarantee a stable route to YouTube.

Judge whether your connection and PC can sustain it

Upload connection

Base the decision on sustained performance, not an advertised plan number or one brief speed test. The configured video bitrate must fit with room for audio, protocol overhead and normal variation. If the upload fluctuates or YouTube reports an unhealthy stream, step down to a rate and quality that remain stable in repeated tests.

PC encoding

Check which hardware encoders OBS actually lists, and test the stream while the PC is doing the intended work. If the encoder cannot sustain 4K/60, or the stream drops frames despite a stable connection, try another supported hardware encoder or lower the output resolution or frame rate. Do not assume software encoding will manage 4K/60 simply because the PC runs Windows 11.

Tradeoffs to consider

  • Codec: AV1 and HEVC have a lower YouTube-recommended 4K/60 video bitrate than H.264, but you can use them only if your PC encoder and workflow support them.
  • Latency: YouTube does not offer its low-latency option at 4K/2160. The stream is optimized for quality at normal latency, so an interactive event may be better served by a lower resolution if low latency matters more than 4K.
  • Image pipeline: SDR is the simpler setup. Resolution alone does not make a video HDR.

When to step down from 4K/60

If testing shows dropped frames, unstable upload or an encoder that cannot keep up, reduce resolution, frame rate or bitrate instead of repeatedly attempting a stream the setup cannot sustain. YouTube’s current recommendations offer these reference points at lower resolutions:

Resolution and frame rate AV1 or HEVC recommended video bitrate H.264 recommended video bitrate
1440p/60 24 Mbps 34 Mbps
1080p/60 12 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube Help recommendations, accessed in 2026, not guarantees of what a particular PC or connection will sustain. Check the current YouTube bitrate table when setting up the encoder.

Optional: stream HDR instead of SDR

Use HDR only if the video source and the PC’s hardware support the complete HDR workflow. YouTube’s current HDR live-streaming guidance supports HEVC. Its OBS instructions specify OBS 30.1 or later, an HDR source, hardware HEVC encoding, Main 10 profile, P010 color format, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG color space. A Windows 11 HDR monitor and the documented Auto HDR procedure are part of YouTube’s guidance for configuring Windows HDR; an HDR monitor or a 4K source by itself does not make SDR footage HDR. YouTube also notes that the Live Control Room preview does not display HDR colors. Follow the equipment and setup details at YouTube’s HDR live-streaming guidance.

Troubleshoot common 4K/60 problems

  • You cannot go live yet: If this is the channel’s first live stream, activation may still be pending. Allow up to 24 hours after enabling live streaming, as described in YouTube’s setup guidance.
  • OBS does not list AV1 or HEVC: The available encoder choices depend on the PC’s hardware and installed support. Select a codec the device exposes; otherwise use a supported encoder and its corresponding YouTube bitrate recommendation.
  • YouTube reports a weak or unstable stream: The connection may not be sustaining the configured video bitrate plus overhead and variation. Repeat a sustained test, check the local network path, then lower bitrate or step down in resolution or frame rate.
  • OBS reports encoding overload or dropped frames: These can point to different constraints: encoding overload suggests the PC cannot keep up, while network-related dropped frames point toward the upload path. Test the actual workload, inspect OBS statistics and YouTube stream health, then reduce the load or use a supported hardware encoder.
  • The stream key is rejected or the stream does not appear: Confirm that OBS is using the key for the correct scheduled or active broadcast and that the key has not been changed. Copy a fresh key from Live Control Room if needed, and keep it secret.
  • The Live Control Room preview looks wrong for HDR: YouTube says its preview does not display HDR colors. Verify the HDR source, HEVC encoder and color settings rather than judging HDR color from that preview alone.
  • A wired connection does not fix the problem: Ethernet only changes the local link between PC and router. It does not improve the ISP plan or guarantee the wider route to YouTube; retest sustained upload performance and adjust stream quality as needed.

Copyright and YouTube policy checks

Before broadcasting a pre-recorded video, make sure you have the rights to every element you stream, including footage, music, images and narration. YouTube may detect copyrighted material during a live stream and can interrupt or restrict a broadcast. Repeatedly looping content also does not guarantee monetization: YouTube’s monetization policies assess whether content is original and offers meaningful value, rather than treating continuous playback as an automatic eligibility route. Review the current rules in YouTube’s live encoder guidance and the applicable YouTube copyright and monetization policies before scheduling a public stream.
