YouTube also lists MP3 as supported for RTMP/RTMPS, so an encoder already set to MP3 does not need to be changed solely because of compatibility. If you use HLS instead, choose AAC, AC3, or EAC3 and check that your encoder meets YouTube’s HLS requirements.
Recommended format and settings for stereo radio
For most stations using RTMP or RTMPS, set the audio codec to AAC, the sample rate to 44.1 kHz, and the bitrate to 128 kbps for stereo. These are YouTube’s recommended stereo settings in its live encoder guidance. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding in its general encoder guidance and recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP.
MP3 is also listed as a supported audio codec for RTMP/RTMPS. If your current encoder produces MP3 reliably, YouTube’s guidance does not make MP3 an unsupported choice. AAC is the straightforward default when selecting a format from scratch; compatibility with the chosen encoder and ingest protocol matters more than switching a working MP3 setup without another reason.
Codec options depend on the ingest protocol
| Protocol | Audio codecs YouTube lists | Recommended stereo settings | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTMP/RTMPS | AAC or MP3 | 44.1 kHz; 128 kbps | RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended secure option for the general encoder workflow. |
| HLS | AAC, AC3, or EAC3 | 44.1 kHz; 128 kbps | HLS has additional playlist and segment requirements and higher latency than a continuous stream. |
YouTube’s HLS setup guidance specifies segment durations of 1–4 seconds. HLS sends segments rather than a continuous stream, which is why it has higher latency. Choose HLS only when your encoder and workflow support its requirements; for an ordinary radio-style stereo stream, RTMPS with AAC is the simpler default.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What the bitrate and sample rate mean
- 128 kbps is YouTube’s recommended audio bitrate for stereo in the cited RTMP/RTMPS and HLS guidance. It is a setting for the incoming stream, not a promise that every viewer receives that exact audio encoding.
- 44.1 kHz is the recommended stereo sample rate. Match the encoder output to this value where available rather than relying on an unnecessary conversion elsewhere in the chain.
- Stereo suits the typical music or spoken-word radio program. Confirm that the encoder is actually configured for two-channel output if stereo is intended.
YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple playback formats for viewers. The codec and bitrate you send are therefore ingest settings; viewers may receive a different playback encoding depending on YouTube’s processing and playback delivery.
When 5.1 surround settings apply
This recommendation is for radio-style stereo. If you are intentionally sending 5.1 surround, the supported codecs and settings differ by protocol: YouTube lists AAC only for RTMP/RTMPS, while HLS lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3. YouTube’s general guidance recommends 48 kHz and 384 kbps for 5.1. Verify that the source mix, encoder, and delivery workflow all support 5.1 before selecting those settings; they are not needed for a normal stereo station.

Preflight: test the stream before broadcasting
- Confirm the ingest protocol. Check whether the encoder is sending RTMP/RTMPS or HLS; do not choose a codec without checking the protocol’s supported options.
- Set the audio output. For stereo over RTMP/RTMPS, use AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps, or retain MP3 if that is the encoder’s established compatible output. For HLS, use one of YouTube’s listed codecs and meet its segment and playlist requirements.
- Run a representative test. YouTube recommends testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the planned program. Listen to the preview for channel balance, clipping, silence, or other problems before making the broadcast public.
- Watch stream health and messages. Check YouTube’s live control-room indicators during the test and during the broadcast, and address warnings rather than assuming that a connected encoder guarantees clean audio.
Common problems and what to check
- YouTube rejects or fails to receive the stream: verify the encoder’s ingest protocol and codec against YouTube’s supported options. For RTMP/RTMPS, AAC and MP3 are listed; for HLS, AAC, AC3, and EAC3 are listed.
- Audio is missing or only one channel is audible: inspect the encoder’s audio source routing and channel configuration, then check the live preview. The recommended 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps values do not fix a disconnected or incorrectly routed input.
- The stream works but has more delay than expected: confirm whether you chose HLS. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because it delivers segments; its documented segment duration is 1–4 seconds.
- The preview sounds distorted or unbalanced: check the source mix and encoder levels, then test again with representative program audio. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health, but the cited format guidance does not prescribe a universal gain level.
Keeping a pre-recorded radio program live
If your station’s format is a pre-recorded program presented as a continuous YouTube stream rather than a live encoder feed, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos to YouTube. It is not a camera-based live setup, and it does not change the audio-format recommendation for an encoder-originated RTMP/RTMPS or HLS broadcast. Upload a recording or playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live; the cloud service continues even when your computer is off. For this distinct prerecorded-video workflow, start a free first day without a card at StreamNeo.
